Anyone here studied or studying in overseas now such as America, Australia, UK,Canada or anywhere around the globe?
Mind sharing your experience with us? as in how are the people over there? their lifestyle? how are they treating you? are there any racists? do you have alot of friends? are most of your friends your race(chinese, malays, indians) instead of white people and black people? are you happy with your decision to study overseas? do you regret for not staying back in Malaysia to continue your studies? do you get homesick every now and then? what's the difference between studying in overseas and studying locally?

List out what course, what college, which state, which country that your studying or had studied in and share your experience with everyone.

Come on everyone share your experience! rclxms.gif

my answered simplied.

studied, UK.

ppl over here? good, friendly, generally way well mannered compared to msia, good customer service, smile, 'cheers, thanks, please, excuse me, pardon me, sorry' are words you wont miss in everyday life.

their lifestyle? some eat in really healthy way, some are drunk 4/7 days, lazy yet efficient and punctual and will not overdo. my lifestyle? healthy yet boring.

treating me so good so far. have met few addicts too, treating me like god since i have to give them drug.

racist? wherever you go, there is. but why should i care, not that i am affected anyway.

friends? plenty, same race but also whites (coursemate, housemate, collegua, random friends' friends)

yes i do. learned plenty of stuff, experienced plenty of stuff that you will never get in local environment.

regret? no, not at all.

homesick? no, except for food.

difference is huge in term of development of soft skills e.g. critical thinking, communication skills, personal skills etc etc besides the way the education is delivered if compare to msia.

yes like said by azarimy, visit those thread e.g studying in aust, studying in UK, studying in US, and you will get the ideas of studying overseas if compare to msia.

Its just a small world. It seems like everybody knows somebody who knows somebody. biggrin.gif
I've already made up my mind, im going to University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, doing business. I'm so freaking nervous man...have to learn so many stuff before going there like Cycling, Cooking, how to exchange flights, go through customs, this and that....how was it sitting on a flight for 30 hours long (frm Malaysia - US) all by your self?

BTW do you get to choose your roommate if you're living in a campus? or do the college pick Asians live with Asians and White lives with White? You guys cycle to skl ? walk? bought a car?

My cousin who used to study in Perdue said that every weekend they have this like Weekly American Football, so everybody would gather at the stadium and watch. What about your colleges?
Do you guys like once in a while rent a car with a bunch of buddies and head towards the city or another state?

P.S : Is it that hard for a Malaysian to hit on a white chick?

Bro, chill out man. Sounds like you're freaking out. Just let things be. It'll come naturally. And DON'T push your luck on that white chick part. Most of the "jual mahal" especially to Asian. I'm telling you before hand. Just focus on your goals & objective studying abroad. White chick or not, don't sweat it.

I don't particularly hit on white chicks. Just be friends. Just be yourself.  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif No need to act cool to lure whites cool.gif

Beware that the immigration officers at international airports may not be so friendly. You may be yelled at. But DON'T reply in a harsh way. They have the authority to NOT let you enter the country, deport you back home or interrogate you. So just be careful. Don't make a fuss in airports.

Haha, im just anxious.
Oh alright, i'll take note of that.

Seriously , i wanna further my studies in overseas as well which ideally UK . If you got the financial capability , go ahead !

For me , my dad still capable to send me to UK now . But , who knows what will happen in the future as the economics is problematic now. My dad is therefore asking me to take my degree locally . How sad !
*
I was worried about financial issues too...i kept wondering after they sent me aboard would they still have enough money for their retirement life...
UK is seriously darn expensive. Why not go to Australia or US?

QUOTE(serena212 @ Nov 19 2008, 05:48 PM)
is it possible for a malaysia student to get into ivy league?
*
Can Nicol Ann David be the best squash player in the world? hell yeah! Everything is possible as long you work really really hard for it. For example my cousin who is currently studying in Harvard.(not trying to boost) ...He was the only 2 Malaysians who got selected for that year if im not mistaken. So if you wanna be the one to get selected, you'll have to work real hard.

As for your question : Yes! its definitely possible to get in to Ivy League.

BTW (those studying overseas) do you guys work part-time? like say as waiter/waitress? librarian? help teacher to mark assignment? or you don't bother to work at all? you guys usually work during winter time and summer right? coz that's the holiday season so i heard.

Definitely  smile.gif

But sometimes I don't really understand why are the ivies such a big deal  sweat.gif  Besides the "Ivy" name (which some Malaysians have not even heard about), the classes are almost equally as challenging as other top-tier schools' (think MIT, Stanford, Northwestern, U of Chicago which are not Ivies)
*
I didn't know what on earth was Ivy League(tot it was some kinda football league) until last few months when i was discussing colleges about US with my cousin. tongue.gif

Please elaborate.

BTW what do u all guys/girls usually do during the weekend? is it always Party/Drinking/Smoking/Clubbing on Saturday night?sex?doing wild things?
Have u encounter a situation where u're mixing with all the whites/blacks and they're smoking and drinking but you don't. However you wouldn't wanna walk away coz you wanna be part of the gang and get to know people...so what would you do? (just 2 questions im curious about)

Then during gathering we can share more of each person's experience in US...ask PIMP to bring some American Ladies back here to Malaysia! wahahhaha...We can meet up before Christmas coz im pretty sure that's the time when all of you are back here right?

We should also exchange names, email or perhaps phone number and get to know each other better. just my 2cent.

You can take the few hundred thousands to travel around the world, bask in different cultures and have all types of experiences. Won't that make you a stronger person who sees a lot of the world?

Ha. Pretty subjective uh.
*
I can't debate much on this coz i haven't live(studying) in overseas before but I would say Traveling and Living in a country or around the world is a totally different thing. Through traveling you don't get to learn as much as you live in a place. Traveling would always be fun coz your're constantly having activities and stuff, going out and the most you travel in a country would probably be lets say a week? 2 week? 3? but living, oh no living, when you are actually living in another country, its a whole lot different.

just my 2 cent. smile.gif

Traveling & living in other country is 2 different issues. 1 is for pleasure & enjoying. Living & study abroad actually assimilate yourself to the foreign environment. Some things are just beyond explanation & one have to experience it them self.

yeap..now do you understand why we're willing to spend 200K to study aboard?
