I read a lot of comments about iphone 3G need someone to help me on this matter. I plan to go to these countries soon; Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and I plan to buy officially unlocked iphone 3G from there. In Hong Kong, I can buy online the official unlocked iphone 3G from apple store ONLY using local issued credit card and the stuff can ONLY be delivered to local address. In Aust and NZ, I need to officially unlock it thru the respective mobile operators.
(1) how can I instantly verify over there that this iphone 3G will works perfectly with our local SIM card? Can i bring maxis/celcom/digi prepaid/postpaid SIM card to verify this?
(2) Should I directly active with iTunes over there with their local SIM card or our local SIM card ?

If someone out there has this experience, pls advice. smile.gif

Hong Kong and NZ sets are definitely UNLOCKED out of box, but for Australia, only OPTUS one is UNLOCKED (by paying AUD50 or more) to unlock it.

Many of us are using NZ, SG, HK or AUS sets... all these are usable with M'sia Telcos SIM Card. You may check out [ Here ] to see which countries sell UNLOCKED unit.

You must activate it with your Local SIM Card that you wanna use. Either you activate it there or back in M'sia, it doesn't matter.
As long as you activate it with your wanna use SIM Card, it should have no problem at all.

Correct me if i'm wrong. whistling.gif

For australia, only optus and telstra sell it prepaid, optus charges 80 dollar to unlock while telstra charges 150 dollar. All the iphones can be unlocked, vodafone, optus and telstra.

I'm going to Melbourne and Perth this Nov and then going to Hong Kong and Auckland in Dec.
btw, I heard it takes longer time to officially unlock the iphone 3G in Australia. Is it true? hmm.gif

get a official Hong Kong unit or buy from Auckland (vodafone shop) for a peace of mind... no more worries about official unlocking as it is unlocked out of the box (still need to activate using iTunes before u can use it)

I think what Clarencerx meant is that he can get the iPhone unit before hand and have it unlock, then when u go to Perth, u can collect it from him, thus no more worries about waiting for the phone to get unlock. afaik it will take 1-3 days to get the iPhone unlock
