recommend newcomers try out liveCDs first (eg, gnoppix/ubuntu live for gnome desktops, knoppix/kanotix for kde, and elive for enlightment desktops), and make your way from there.


I see too many l33t wannabes trying to install debian from netinst without even knowing how to use the command line, much less get apt-get started...
