When those aluminium casings first came out, they were measurably lighter
than the other cases of the same class but today, I really doubt so.

The biggest reason today probably would be that since the manufacturers
could charge a premium on those alu cases that the focus is on them.
You'll be hard pressed to find a "nice" case that is not made of alu.

Manufacture like it so much because of it's weight, easy to bend or shape thus reducing their production cost and at the end enhanced the output by adding this & that so they could mark-up their price even more...

however, plzz remember material cost for aluminium is higher than SECC...
better appearance and lightweight is main point for their marketing. Quality build also better....

this is just an idea. if we wanna build a light casing, why don't we build a frame out of aluminium and drape it with cloth. the cloth should be nice kain. not sum shabby kain buruk.

cloth=lightweight+good ventilation. how about that? the new bmw concept. the GINA. uses cloth as a cover. and boy its amazing!!

I suppose there's no end to creativity but there's a prob with
using cloth tho. Imagine adding some fans ...., the cloth
juz become vacuum cleaner bags

Many factors contribute to the end product.
For example comparing Lotus cars (mostly aluminuim) to other
supercars, can u say the rest don't look or perform as well or maybe
even better?

Aluminium casing looks much prettier than SECC casing... Ada ooommpphh...

for maybe future cases, made with cloth, maybe what is needed to be done is to have a positive pressure case. so that dust will be blown out and not sucked in.

and for adding fans, can easily cut a hole in the cloth and make a bracket for the fan to stay in place. i wish i had the time and money to experiment in these ideas..

and alpha700, yup, no end to creativity.. maybe there will be cases that are modded with materials that we haven't even thought of. now, there are cases made of wood, and even paper. papier mache!! there is no limit!! go on modders!

Steel rusts, tin doesn't

thats why there are treatments like painting and anodising. but nowadays, there are mods that are looking for the rusted and war-torn effect.. but aluminium has its disadvantages like bad sound dampening and alluring-feel-good-feeling whenever touched. hahaha

Although rust is a rare case among us here, somehow when hunting for chassis in the junkyard you'll most probably end up with aluminium chassis as steel chassis might be too rusty to be salvaged

Aluminium is easier to mod with than steel. I would like to see a chassis made of titanium

maybe aluminium is colder then steel that is why so many ppl will like to get a Alu casing aldo it is expansive.

cardborad case.. it actually looks really good... no need to airbrush.. hahaha!! that is ryte cool. never thot of making the panels of a case out of cardboard. astounding..

one thing about aluminium, if you intend to mod it 'kaw-kaw punya' and wants to weld it. its really hard to weld it. cutting it may be easy but for steel, its easier to mold into shape with the proper equipment. a lotta good looking mods out there are made of steel cases. and it turned out really well. so i think, whether the case will turn up better if its alu is out of the question. that is dependent on the skill.

and in other forums, i found out that they used a lot of bondo to sculpt and shape the cases as well as adding detail.. or 'all purpose putty'. what is its common name? is it available in normal hardware shops? it seems like a really good material to be used if we wanna add detail and maybe sculpting those big air vents!!
