Hi Guys,
I am looking for Acoustic wall coverings, do you guys know where i can get it? is it necessary for it? or can I DIY myself? I have heard from some people that we can actually use egg tray for acoustic purposes, any comment on this?
Thanks in advance

Egg trays are used as diffuser. You will need absorption panel and also bass trapper. To treat a room, you will need to study the room first. Usually we place the diffuser on the first reflection point of ur front speakers and also the rear of the floor standing speakers. As for the back, u can use absorption panels ...n add a few pieces of bass trappers for the room if needed. I sell Auralex panels. but u can get DIY material to save some money ..not much though QUOTE(sliver2c @ Oct 30 2008, 05:59 PM) Hi Guys, I am looking for Acoustic wall coverings, do you guys know where i can get it? is it necessary for it? or can I DIY myself? hi sliver2c, usually branded acoustic panels are not cheap. But I've tried doing the DIY panel myself using high quality rock wool (4' x 8' is RM350). Using this 4' x8', u can cut it out into two 4'x 2. But then u will need to make the frame using MDF board and laminate it using fabric. In the end, the cost per piece for 4x2 will be around RM200. As for Auralex, 4x2 diffuser is below RM180. And you get discount on bulk purchase say 10 pieces. PLUS, it's a quality foam engineered by professional. Check out http://www.auralex.com/

hi silver, before I PM u the best price. This is what I need to know from you.
1) Give me the dimension of your room. 2) What is in your room? say cabinet, how many sofas, tables? roughly give me the items. 3) the construction of the 4 walls in ur room ...say ..2 walls, 1 wall + 2 windows, 2 sliding doors, ...
Basically I need to know wat kind of room u have before i quote u the price coz you might not need so many diffusors after all. you will probably need some bass traps and absorbers.

Hi junwei, My room is not square, that is a main issue but i have manage to arrange the system for better staging, the left wall is about 11ft and the right wall is about 13-14ft and about 8ft high, there is a boofshelf in the room with a glass door and one L shape sofa with a wood coffee table and also a 2 panel window. Thanks

from the plan, i would assume it's a bedroom layout with 3 solid walls + 1 wall with windows and the wooden door. I would suggest that if possible, try to shift the table away coz from the plan, i think the table is quite big. cd racks can function as diffusor too but it will not balance out if u r combining it with real acoustic material as the density and compound of the material are different. Thank you very much for the detail explanations and proposals. Can you PM me individual price of the diffuser, absorber and bass trap? I'm thinking to modify the door to open outwards instead of current inwards (unless my wife boom me for blocking her way) TQ !
One more question, how bout distance of speakers from wall ? Bookshelf and Floorstanders ?

Different speakers have different characteristic in different room settings. I would suggest you try out the positions starting from closest to the wall and slowly move it away. Also do some toe-ing in n out will fine tune the sound stage. my question is why you leave the subwoofer so far away from the corner? I forgot to draw the subwoofer in the diagram. I would put it on the far right corner...again closest to the wall n slowly move it away.
will PM u the auralex price.

its better to test out the diffusers, absorber & basstrap by randomly placing in different locations. there is no hard rules on those items placement. my listening room takes whole day to test and finding the ideal location. coz' there is no rooms which systematically the same and not necessary to have it all or else the sound become much dull. try this Acoustic Treatment and Design for Recording Studios and Listening Roomsno offence, just my 2 cents cheers!!! every room has different acoustic characteristic ..same as our hifi/ht system. the plan i drafted for djdyks is a basic reference. The final work still lies in the hands of the listener. Follow the basic and work your way through to get a better hearing room I try not to go into too technical bcoz there is too much to cover in this topic and in the end, someone will be asking the same question "so..wat should i do next??..." after reading all the stuff. The material in all Auralex products are different for different frequency and purposes, check 'em out at http://www.auralex.com

I personally use some auralex products (2" foam wedges) and while they do do some absorption (> 500Hz), if you're looking to treat a room properly, they aren't that great. They are probably useful for rooms which already sound pretty decent..
but the best treatment I've found was to buy my own fiberglass panels and burlap fabric, and DIY your own panels.
