I am the type that do not like to trouble people by bringing them shopping around and wasting their time, moreover i do not have friends that play bass. Most of them play CD player...Press play button!

I believe there are sifus around that tried the basses and have some kinda deduction made in their mind. I need those advise...

Sorry i like things barnd new, no ding and no scratch. Unless the used equipment is faily new and seldom used.

Thinking of the sweet and sliver coz by previous owner really make you shrug. No to mention what food he eat when playing his bass...(i over exagerated a bit)

I personally own a sx jazz bass, used to have a very bad impression about squiers (well, they do suck pretty bad last time), but now, squiers are getting so much better at whatever they're doing. Recently tried a squier affinity jazz bass in swee lee, and i can tell you, it totally blows my sx away. (my sx is considered very good already)

Like some of the forummers say, the newer sx are getting worse and worse because the company is pushing its output, sacrificing quality.

As much as i can say, nothing beats testing both of them and see the difference, ask any of the forummers here if they wanna teman u and go bass testing tongue.gif

P.S. I would personally recommend a squier affinity jazz bass, NEVER buy california series. the affinity ones cost around rm800-900.

Ah! at least some useful comments coming in..What is the difference between the california and affinity squire? I know they are made in China and Indonesia. i heard from Bently to go for Indonesian model coz better electronics and better wood. Is it true?
I would be more into good old day songs, not those rockbass sound...

If i am not mistaken, the earlier sx is made in Taiwan with better quality but by now they have moved to China for production..Quality and the type of woood used compromised...

in my opinion, we should boycott bentley. they are overpriced and lousy service. but i guess thats my experience. does anyone have nice things to say about them?

i think the best value for money, would be getting a 2nd hand instrument from a seasoned musician. it should be well taken care off and u get a quality instrument.

TEST IT! and judge on your own opinion! xD

for name i would go for squire tho.. and BUT coz i dun quite believe Brand is everthing i would rather seek more low line guitar that were quite un-popular =x

ibanez and yamaha b4 were also unknown and get alot of silly remarks when they were firstly produce and naw it stand as tall as fender and gibby! ( i do research on it for my college assignment xD )

anyway.. its up to u do decide, just giving my opinion NOT suggestion =)

erm, im not so sure about the electronics but the wood is alder on the affinity, a much better alternative than whatever they're using on the california series, which even fender didnt really mention the exact name of the wood. Do note that there are some bad affinity out there, seek them out and destroy them. remember to always test first, dun be tempted by just how cool they look and jump on them.

of course, if u can find a VM series (vintage modified) squier, do let us know, it will pawn a mim fender easy. (quoted from ultimate guitar forums). been looking for them for almost forever, hehe.

I didn't know sx ever had a plant in taiwan. Mine made in china though, i would say it's a rather superb bass smile.gif.

I think for year end sale where bently will offer quite some discount on their stuff or i will buy from sweelee in Singapore.
It is true that Malaysian pricing is expansive. Whenever i am in Singapore i always hang around their music store, beautiful yamaha bases a variety of them even after conversion is 30% percent cheaper than here. Here only gantung 2 or 3 basses only somemore expansive. Fender Mexican bases is only SGD649 during their sweelee warehouse sale...So cheap but back then never had the interest yet just starting only...

haha a bass brand enquiry thread becomes a road trip to SG thread ! cool.

back to topic, for me i prefer a squier more than an SX bass. both P and J bass tried em on both brands. the squier affinity is really much better within that price range, just a littleeeee more expensive but way better quality. and btw SX has very lowsy lowsyyy sh!tty routing inside which is damnnn fugly haha if ur pickguard for jazz bass is taken off. So i recommend squier.

I owned an SX SJB LTD2 bass. I have test a couple of fender MIM and squire bass. Here's my 2 cents point of view. They do sound different due to the combination of materials and parts.

Here, it is difficult to make an apple to apple comparison as different retailer usually do not carry the brand that you can A-B test. Even if you managed to find a shop which carries both Squire and SX, it is unlikely they would have the different Squire range to compare (the sub-RM500 squire and RM1000 differs in sound and construction quality). You should test the bass with the bass amp that you intend to purchase. This is gonna get complicated as even Fender MIA will sound craps if the amp is crabby. Your expectation will surely be compromised somehow as the sound may not even come close unless you can afford to stretch your $$$ for the equipment. Therefore you should take a pragmatic approach:

1. Determine your budget allocation for the bass and the amp
2. Do a bit of leg work and go round seeking shops which have the brands for comparison
3. Start selecting the amp as the common denominator for test. Do not use their high end amplifier you can't afford to take home.
4. The amp choice depends if you want to play in room or gig environment (this will determine the power 20W-200w and the portability).
5. Check the selected bass for the workmanship which can affect your playing i.e rough frets, buzzing, high action, electronics , etc.
6. Bass string types (round wound, flat wound, coated and etc) affects the sound more than guitar strings.
7. You need to justify to your wallet if the 'better' sounding bass is worth the extra Ringgit you have to fork out (does twice the price sounded 2x as good?)

Most important is to let your ear decide so that you will not regret your purchase. Surf and net and check out this link on opinions: [URL=http://http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=477183]
Hope this helps.

bro hoysum,

hi, back to the topic. i've tried both the sx and squier jazz basses. it's hard to compare because there're so many squier series out there. for the sx itself, there're a few variants too. so i belive for the sx, you have the rm700++ one in mind.

for the sx, the one i tested had gold hardware and it's neck is shiny laquered (like mij fenders smile.gif ) cost about rm800. sounds very good. bright clean sound, good for slapping. finishing is very, very good. salesman said limited edition. there's one selling at my place around 1k with hardcase.

for the squier, rm800 will get you only the affinity series. affinity these days sucks. if you got $$ go for the vintage vibes series. rm1k++ only brows.gif please bear in mind that california series squier is KNOCK OFF. in the past, the california really sucks. bad necks get wraped fast, bad sound, etc.. but today have improved by leaps and bounds.

if i put the sx to a affinity or california, i'll take the sx. better bang for the bucks. if you're looking for the trademark 'mwah' sound of a jazz, it's present in both basses though.

it's really important to test them one after another ON THE SAME AMP. because every bass is unique. even for the same brand and model, one bass can sound different from the other - wood factor.

i personally own a affinity pbass (pakage one). i'm lucky to get a nicely made one which sounds quite good.

what kind of music you play? do you meed the mwa mwa jazz sound or do a lot of slapping? for me i play in church only, so i choose pbass because it got a soft thump sound, more suitable for my purpose.

stray topic: don't bother about swee lee sales. they normally do it on weekdays. very, very crowded, not everything half price and by the time you reach there almost everything sold out! i'm in jb so i go to compare guitar stuff in singapore quite often. not necessarily cheaper than malaysia. but definately more choice. here's a guide: cheap thing cheaper in malaysia (sx, squier), expensive thing cheaper in singapore (fender, gibson). if you're looking for mij fender, then it's worth the trip, because it's widely available there. singapre trip - count me in too!!

here's a singapore music forum: www.soft.com.sg if you want to buy anything from the buy/sell section, i can ve your agent. brows.gif hehehe... just joking. biggrin.gif

Thanks you for the advice. As for my practise amp i have a peavey microbass. I might buy a bigger amp when i a ready to gig. Sorry what is 'mwah' sound? is it malay word for mewah? i like the sound of budget, budget, budget.......

As for the SX limited, i missed a sale by someone right in the neighbourhood.
http://buysell.mypdacafe.com/9949.html
As all the times i was thinking of squier, upon reading his advert, i got interested, i research and call him up. He told me sorry, that how i posted in the forum....

yeah, that's the sx jazz i'm talking about. that's a good deal! my office server block youtube so can't provide any links. when i say mwa, i'm talking about the trademark sound of due to the jazz pickups. there are 2 pickups, one placed near the bridge and another at the neck. so the sound range is from boomy to nasal. um.. i'm bad at describing.

if you have the chance, go and buy Carole King's concert dvd. the bassist uses a jazz bass.

http://www.caroleking.com/index.php?p=disc..._detail&id=2592

to listen how a pbass sounds like, just listen to the shadows. very classic pbass sound.

here's a link to tesla pickups manufacturer. they have sample sounds so you can learn to 'hear' what a jazz bass sounds like. once you get the hang of it, you can tell what bass is used when listening to any songs!

http://www.teslatek.com/index_en.htm

go for the sx, it's limited edition allright. budget squier really sucks these days

jb vs pb for dummies:
a jb sounds 'mwa-mwa' while a pb sounds 'thump-thump'.. biggrin.gif

Ask the sifus about the guitar
Buy a bass that sound best to your ears
Then play and love it
After that you should have known what type of bass you are looking
Dont be sad if you make the wrong choice and what other think
Some peopel have different taste
Choose yours smile.gif
