Which one is the best software for compression?? WinRAR or 7zip??

Winrar is not freeware, 7zip is. . . I use 7zip. . .

for best compression.. try KGB Archiver..

for commercial use.. use the freeware 7zip..

Nowadays people use WinRAR. I pick WinRAR for its advanced options and functions.

i use 7z since its freeware~
for me mor o less is same..
i mean winrar la..doesn't c any big diff on compression compare wit 7z..

7zip is freeware and supports unicode, however only Winrar can compress .rar files.

Most files in the Internet are distributed in .rar format nowadays, i don't see how 7zip can compete against WinRar.

7zip is better is your wanto uncompressed and compressed unicode file name and folder ~

7zip support unicode ~ japanese,korean,chinese.....

I use WinRAR cause it is faster when uncompressing files as it supports multiple cores. I believe 7z still doesn't.

Also, all upgrades has been free so far - only had to pay once.

actually using 7z rite now.. i dun compress thngy at all, just un-compress thngy i downloaded frm d net.. so far ok ah..somemore its free...turning 2 open source program nowadays..

7zip can unpacking rar file, ok. . .

If you'd like high compression ratio, I'd recommend KGB Archiver but it takes 3 days to archive/compress 2GB into 2MB (Yes, it's possible!).

yeah..although it can't compress to .rar, but it can unpack .rar le..

i support winrar.7zip does not support many functions as the winrar

7zip only use to uncompress file that winrar do not support.

winrar is good enough, support alot format, including 7zip, support multipart files, self extract file, and never expired even in trial version, so just install winrar, no point to install freeware.

I use both. Sometimes I need to compress in 7-Zip format.

used both, for normal user like me there is nothing different if u used either software. currently using 7zip.

I want to ask whether 7zip can use for company users?? illegal or not?

I got use this for my company now ZipGenius(freeware) but this cant unzip .rar

Its freeware software..
I think 7-Zip better..It can extract .exe files and many more..
Plus its Compact,fast,easi and freeware..

i prefer winrar because it have the unzip wizard.

You guys are making fanboyism remarks. 7zip substantially performs better than WinRAR. But the drawback is that 7zip consumes more hardware resources during the compression. There are other software which are better than both 7zip and WinRAR in terms of speed vs compression. WinRAR, however, is pretty much user friendly but the annoying "please buy winrar" pop-up whenever you're opening a file with WinRAR make some people hate it. While 7zip is free plus you can actually playing around with the command tools. 7zip does able to make password but it cannot compressed into rar files as well as WinRAR cannot compressed into 7z files. I will only uses WinRAR if there's a need for me to compress files into rar files. Otherwise, I will stick with 7zip for decompressing files (faster than WinRAR as my PC can handle it).

7zip cannot compressed into rar files and WinRAR cannot compressed into 7z files; is it because they cannot make it or because of the copyright issue for the compression algorithm?? and the winzip format is copyright free/open source?

It's about license. WinRAR only allow it's own software to compress as rar files. Just like 7zip for it's own property. Winzip is not free however. Perhaps they already gained income generated from Microsoft as they using it as main compression thingy in windows. Also letting other developers to use their compression method.

seriously bzip2 would be the best compression, but you Windows user might not be familiar with it.

Seriously, that's a non-issue to me as usually .zip is the widely use format (as far as my work is concerned)

While WinRAR is more popular and perhaps powerful, I choose 7zip because it is free and quite easy to use

Powerful as in what part? The only thing that I can think WinRAR being a powerful tool is that the software itself has better user-friendly functions (short cuts, tips & helps, etc) compared to 7zip. Though, the functions are simply similar to which both WinZip and 7zip have. Based on compression, 7zip is better than WinRAR.

I pick 7zip, free :-) and 7z format is used by some exe installer maker e.g. NSIS because of it higher compression rate.

And some open source application have an option to download 7z format file.

7zip ain't bad considering that I just zip and unzip. Hardly touch any other functions. Moreover, it's free. Why not?

i believe winrar is multi-threaded, hence it will take advantage of multi-core processors and is faster than 7z when compressing and uncompressing

Ever tried uncompressing the file back to its original? How long does it take? Is the unpacked file 100% the same with the original?

You could hash the source files and the unpacked file with MD5 for this purpose.

I for one believe lossless compression does have its limits. It depends on the data. And 2GB into 2MB for typical, usable files (videos, audio, documents) is downright impossible.

Prove me wrong. Because I'd rather spend uncompressing a 2GB file in 3 days, offline rather than downloading a 2GB file for 2 days.

You don't need to spend 2 days to download a 2GB file... nowadays we have broadband...

You need only approx. 3 hours to download a 1GB file if your broadband connection is 1Mbps.

I don't think that holds true for BitTorrent transfers, as it is being throttled by our thoughtful and friendly ISPs despite the availability of bandwidth.

7zip... more user friendly(my opinion), more features (pause, estimated time, run foreground, comp/expand speed), Free (no need get piratx version) and zip format is more than enough for send files over internet

I use Winrar. Because i have a lot of .rar files.

winrar is more common. I use 7zip rarely.

I've recently switched to 7zip because it is free and consume less memory. The downside is only that its icons are extremely ugly, i'll have to manually change the icons for .rar, .zip, .iso, and .7z to prevent myself from uninstalling it immediately after seeing all those ugly Win 98 style icons sitting all around my laptop.

Being unable to compress files in .rar format isn't a problem for me at all.

Well I prefer to use winrar as while it has the advantage of reading every compression method out there, my image viewer supports reading data from .rar compilation, thus I can save quite a lot of space by compressing my image files. While 7z has better compression ratio, no image viewer can directly read images from it's archive, thus I don't really have any use for it.

I use Winrar. Admittedly its program icon can be ugly as a goatse fug, but thankfully XPize took care of that.
