Well the way you compare it is kind of odd.
WoW is a 2004 game while
DDO is a couple of years later. When the game was developed, that stage of game engine is superior for those years of technology. Frankly, even with WoW and its latest visual upgrade, i hardly pull out a 22fps with everything max @ 1680x1050 only manage to get a 12 fps with no UI modifications.
Cryptic Studios uses their Cryptic Engine originally for City of Heroes and improvised it for XBOX360 and PC. During its first day release, the UI was lagging that causes a major FPS nerf. They fixed it and i got a sweet boost of +8fps to my original 10fps with medium shadow on.
The difference is how each game engine calculates its eye candy and UI rendering. DDO latest DX10 implementation is a simple one. It didnt fully utilize the DX10 features except for dynamic shadow, shaders and soft edges water.
tat's my point - both previous years game technologies yet they able to produce graphics which looks beautifully stunning to me and i believe some of the other 8-9 millions players.
i know Cryptic designed the game graphic engine from scratch. well praised but i dun think it's well-optimized at this stage and it really requires MAJOR improvements/tweaking. i read in the forum - even some guys wif ubers rigs are crawling not much faster than my lappy...wif some of the graphic settings turned OFF.
WoW gave me a smooth gaming experience (if not bcoz of the network problem caused by screamyx) and same goes to DDO. but not CO at the moment. i hope they'll fix it soon coz for now...the game just feels slow...not as fast-paced as i hope for.
word of praise - hero customisation and own power selection is a new great idea for me.
