Jake's is hands down one of the best places for steaks in KL, forget the other recommendations for the Ship,Victoria Station etc, it's all crap in comparison.

How you determine good steak?
*
Cut, texture, juiciness, marbling, obviously it needs to be cooked to your liking (medium rare for me)....a proper steak should be eaten 'Au Jus' i.e. in it's own juices and no additional 'sauces/marinades'. That's not to say I don't enjoy a nice black pepper, or a gorgonzola steak at some points. But for the real steak connoisseur it should be 'au jus'.

Sounds like you're a food fan of my own design.

If you haven't been you have to try Jake's, you'll not be disappointed. Great selection of US, Australian, NZ beef, and wagyu as well.

Someone already mentioned Morton's in Singapore....great all around steakhouse chain, I used to visit the one in Boston from time to time during my University days, but it's not cheap. We're talking 100SGD a steak at least and it comes with nothing but the meat. A baked potato is 20SGD as well. Took a lot of clients there too smile.gif Great Martinis as well.

If you're travelling....

New York - Peter Luger.... the best in the WORLD tongue.gif

I like your interpretation about how to enjoy the steaks but some don't. I have been into Jake, Prime, Gaucho and most of the establish steak house if you read from the first page tongue.gif Never been into those 2 you mention on the last comment though. Will visit if I travel to S'pore. I'm asking this question because I read someone mention Steven steaks are the best. For me I enjoyed steaks without any sauce or marinate.
*
What's your best pick for Malaysia then?

I've never tried Gaucho....

Tried 2 steaks at Las Vacas Kelana Jaya.. was wondering what's all the hype.. and came back disappointed. The steaks are overrated by many. Dry, lack of taste.. the rib-eye had no marble feeling.

Will not go again.
*
Yeah I had the same feeling unfortunately, the only thing going for Las Vacas is if you're on a cheap no-frills budget.

I had a CNY dinner in Jake's Starhill outlet and was extremely unimpressed. For the price we paid (rm900 for 8 adults 2 kids) the steaks were simply mediocre. Frankly speaking I get more satisfaction by buying meat from the shop and pan searing it at home.

Dunno is it because CNY time all the main chefs go on holiday or what. Or maybe it's just this outlet, cos I sort of remember 3 years back I go the damansara outlet the steaks were quite good hmm.gif
*
Never tried Jake's Starhill, so that's surprising to hear. I'm a near weekly regular at Jake's Damansara, and they don't fail me. However 900RM 8+2 seems like a fairly good price for Jake's , so I'm guessing you just had the Aust grain fed? Maybe it was a sub par batch? sad.gif

Ouch, is it that expensive now? Oh well.

Not quite a steakhouse, but I was impressed by the steak at Cafe Cafe.

Ril's is on my list of togo.....I've heard lots of good things.

Oh,

Recently was shown an old unpretentious restaurant in Ampang named 'Chalet Suisse'

Steak and Cheese lovers....

Raclette, Fondue, Steak Tartare, Chateaubriand....

I'll be going back, can't complain, and not crazy expensive.

would like to bring my gf for western food this coming valentine but not sure where can i get a nice and well cooked steak

i have booked mandarin oriental but not sure if there is other place that is better and maybe cheaper?
*
I don't think you can really go wrong with the Mandarin Grill.

Prime will be a great alternative , but priced in the same range.

Ril's Bangsar, has decent food, and there's a nice bar/lounge upstairs with live music occasionally. It'll be cheaper.

Cafe Cafe for the romantic ambiance and food, just make sure you get a good table. And of course this is more a French/Continental European restaurant than a grill/steakhouse, but they still do have great meat courses on the menu.

went to Ril's and man, the steak(rib eye) was very salty(although it's perfectly cooked). Told the waitress about it but she just nod and walk away. I just finished about 3/4 of and walk away. no more 2nd time for it.

I Shouldn't expect that much

Sorry to hear that man sad.gif

Pretty shocked by her attitude, you should write to them!

How many of you have found a good steak tartare in KL?

I seem to only recall having it locally at Bistro a Table, and the Swiss restaurant in Ampang. Would love to find some other good spots..

I alrdy banned Prime long ago....

Went there with some freinds from oversea.... it was an embarrasing experience...

Mandarin Grill, was that the place they recently converted to some pseudo michellin star outfit?

What happened at Prime?

Mine have always been constantly decent for KL.

1. They were out of ALL those aged/grain fed steak
2. the steak were consistently over cooked for 4 out of 5 orders.
3. Service were bad, perhaps thats because we were dressed like cina-beng and not some gwailou in suits.

Fair enough, in fact I dont think Prime is worth it at full price. I use starwood privileges for 50% off food if dining as a apair.
