People,

I have a very peculiar problem here. I am using iPhone 3G with FW 2.1, unlocked set from Singapore. I am using it virgin style (no jailbreak etc). I have been using for about a month without any issue until yesterday.

I was still using the phone(phone call and SMS) yesterday morning. The moment I went into my office, my phone showed "No Service". Which was weird. So I turned off and on the phone. Still the same.

Then I went to Settings>Carrier to search for the carrier. It searched and found all the providers "My Maxis, My Maxis 3G, My Celcom, My Celcom 3G, etc". So I selected My Maxis 3G. Once I select that, I will get "Network Lost - Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in Settings". I have tried this with every other provider 3G and non 3G. Still the same.

So went to Apple Support page to try out their suggestions. One of their things was to toggle Airplane Mode. When I do that, the phone will start searching for new network. After 2-3 minutes later, it will detect back the network. But this connection will last between 10-30 minutes. I have tried resetting the phone and still the same thing.

I was pretty set that something is wrong with the phone and decided to restore it back once I get home. To my surprise, there is no problem connecting to Maxis at my housing area. rclxub.gif

I thought it was fluke, played around with the phone for like an hour, still active connection. Still baffled, decided to restore the phone anyway, just in case. After restore, nothing was wrong. I was quite happy.

Stepped in to the office this morning. Same thing happen doh.gif . The dreaded "No Service" is back.

I tried swapping SIM card with my friend. It's still the same. My SIM can work in his phone without a problem and his SIM card cannot work in mine. Both phone next to each other. I don't know what else to do.

hMm.. that's weird but at least U know it's not a phone problem. Sounds more like a network problem. Try putting ur iPhone where his phone is?! *grins* Perhaps the location u are at is just uhm.... well..... a blind spot!

I kinda figured out how to temporarily fix it.
Whenever I turn off "Enable 3G" under Settings>General>Network then my phone can get signal without a problem. The moment I turn it on then its back to "No Service"

I don't know why this is happening

Now it's in edge mode, and I am now paying unlimited 3G plan with maxis and if i cannot get 3G in my office, looks like a big waste for me. I have to monitor this situation first

Yeah, i have the same problem before this. The popup appears when i turn on the 3G. But it only happen in certain place, my home, etc... It looks like a bad coverage for 3g network, not the phone itself... Then i can't stand with it anymore. So i do MNP. Migrate to celcom. Now everythings goes fine... rclxms.gif

yup. i was just about to say that. it happens very often if you are moving from a 3g zone to a non-3g zone.

First of all, EDGE/GPRS and 3G/HSDPA are 2 different radio band. The reason why you have signal on EDGE/GPRS and not 3G in certain area is due to network coverage and not entirely the phone. The old network (EDGE/GPRS) is using GSM (which have a wider coverage) and 3G's on UMTS (if not mistaken). 3G is relatively new hence the poor coverage. Maybe maxis was doing some maintenance on the tower nearby you that time. I once experience this with Digi, the signal dropped where last time it was a full bar. A quick check with digi shoes that they are doing some work to the tower.

Last time the 1st gen iPhone had a problem with maxis network (the early iPhone adopters will remember this). Only after a few months maxis patched their towers to support iPhone. Other telcos are not having the problem.

Why i said its not entirely caused by iPhone? This is because the iPhone 3G baseband (the part that controls the phone signal) is known to have a problem latching on to the 3G network. People in the US is still complaining about 3G blind spot where other phones does not experience it. Just hope apple will patched this and resolve issues regarding 3G signal. One more thing, the iPhone should drop its 3G connection and switch to GSM signal once the signal strength weaken. I dont know why yours did not automatically swith the network. Like i said, maybe its maxis doing maintenance and the iPhone still detect a strong 3G signal. Thts why it did not switch network.

What you can do is just give maxis a ring and ask if they are doing some tower maintenance or something near your office.

I think its just the network coverage problem... I once went to Celcom building and inside there is no network for My Maxis network, can't even make a call or send sms... but outside the building its ok... haha

maybe they band Maxis service there? lol...

bjkhan,

it is normal.. I am Maxis 3G user too.
especially if u come out of lift or car park.

I recommend u to select "Automatic" rather than Maxis or Maxis 3G in your carrier...

The signal will come back automatically, though sometimes may takes few minutes.

You are probably right, because as of today, the 3G seem to work fine in my office area. Maxis probably was doing something in the area.

The issue actually happens when I am stationary in my office for 8 hours. Plus my network setting is always automatic. I was just trying to engage it manually since the automatic can't detect signal.
