My advice is to learn about the other 2 specs. Retribution raiding is all about gears or guild trust (skill is a hidden factor where most people won't see until you get into raids, so its not counted). If you don't have at least one, you don't get to raid, its that simple. Also, if you know how to tank and/or heal, you will be much more easier to work with, and tanks/healers would prefer to take you compared to other players. I remember back when I started my paladin, there are so many warriors who melee mobs from the front (parry), with 1.3 BoJ daggers no less! Then they end up lower than me on dps meters.. Shows how much knowledge people have nowadays..
Anyways, with the 3.0 buffs, ret paladins put out decent dps, I don't see much issues with you getting into pugs really, unless they're really elitist, especially about gears... These kind of people should be avoided at all costs anyways... Cos they probably have one or two people in the raid who they trying to carry for gears, or their tanks want offspec gears... Always happen like this.. Everytime I pug and get told 'no ret paladins', I just link my weapon, within the next 5 secs an invite comes my way. Heh Best way for a retribution paladin to start off in your position is to spec prot, find a good healer, generally one that has skills, but gear level is about the same as you, be good friends, and organize instance/heroics/raids together. You're a paladin, prot paladins are easily one of the easiest to play tanks around, especially with noobs who can't stop putting Serpent Sting and dots on sheep and saps.. Pugging healers/tanks is a no no. Dps anytime also can get, don't worry.... Wrath is in 1 week, so you should probably take it easy on lvl 70 heroics for now. Oh and you mentioned mixing specs... Don't do that... PvE ret should be something like 0/5/56, Prot should be something like 0/56/5. No idea about holy, I never specced holy in my life.
