i think mine is sp2 when i check,
then update become sp3.
actually,i want to sell my xp pro.
but after i see lot of game cannot support vista,
i changed my mind to use dual boot..hurm..
normally they don't provide the original os disc, only the os product key (sticker) on the back of the laptop. recovery disc normally only for certain pc. is not actually the os disc, the recovery disc only for that specific pc (for recovery purpose).
after several time of recovery the disc may not be use again.
you need to buy the os disc together with the product key. the installing os duration you should come across the validation session. there you may need to call the Microsoft hot line to validate that you are the new user, or you may need to inform that you are installing the os at a different pc now.
from my past experience, the hot line is just a voice activation. i mean there is no actual Microsoft personnel there. you have to listen the instruction & speak clearly during your phone call.
pls ensure the person who sell you the os can be trusted. he/she may lock police report that his/her os been stolen. normally pc user very few register their os. should be ok for you to use. blah..blah...

best of luck.
