My name is Iskandar and I've been a Villans since 1990...my all time great was David Platt and as for the current crop, Gareth Barry gets my vote...what about you all?

Iskandar/stonei;

Maybe what you can do is check out other EPL clubs' thread, and start one for Aston Villa, don't remember seeing one here as yet.

hi there, I used to adore Platty, a bit like Bryan Robson, and the current Lampard play like him a lot. He was sold by Ron Atkinson after a few seasons (3 seasons?), too bad.

Yeah they have young talented players, really good. But what every team needs now is a sugar daddy if they wanna win major trophies, sad times for football

That's not so hard to find. What matter the most is the team must prove their determination to become a successful football club both domestic and europe. Villa has being labelled bogey team in EPL few years ago but now the team looks pretty solid to break the Big 4 domination.

Even though the current crop is performing well, I still believe that we need a bigger squad to sustain our challenge. Another one or two new players in the next transfer window will certainly helps, Mr. O' Neill...and I see us beating the Pompey this week...

Aston Villa Football Club aka The Villans was established back in 1874. A the founding member of The Football League in 1888, Villa is one of the original so-called "The Big Five" of the English League along with Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton. Unknown to many, Aston Villa is the fourth most successful club in England having won a European Cup (81-82) as well as 7 First division titles, 7 FA Cup and 5 League Cup. They play their home game at Villa Park in Aston,Birmingham. Another interesting fact is that the club have provided the most England internationals, 66 to date, more than other clubs. Among the legends of the clarets and sky blue was Danny Blanchflower, Dennis Mortimer, Peter Withe,David Platt, Paul McGrath and Gareth Southgate while Gareth Barry, Agbonlahor and Young continues to impress in the present.

Wow the memories... thumbup.gif

Villa was actually the first team that caught my eye when I started watching football in 98/99... One match that I remembered was the one where Villa won 3-2 vs Arsenal, where Dennis Bergkamp made a return from injury and immediately scored 2 goals. Well I ended up supporting Arsenal instead rclxm9.gif

Dion Dublin and Joachim were the ones to watch back then hehe... Angel as well, feisty striker but ended up nowhere now. and then Villa became a mediocre team up till recent seasons when they got a new sugar daddy and later O'Neil took over. Kudos to Villa's new owner, who didn't go out and muck up the market like Roman and Man City's Arab dudes did. Gabby and Young will probably be the new stars in the future, but you guys will have to watch out for bigger, richer teams coming to poach.

Keep it up guys, show the rich money-splashing clubs how to run a football club.

Spot on mate! The last thing we need is Villa becoming the next success-buying club..glad that O'Neill believes in his youngsters, instead of trying to play Football Manager and splashing money around for some over rated "star".
Ahh..Joachim..along with Overmars and Kanchelskis, they were among the fastest players around those days...

Great win! If we keep this momentum I do believe that Champions League is within reach...and as far as I can remember, this season is one of BPL's best ever, with lots of big wins, unpredictable results, over achiever teams making those expert pundits looks like amateur...I mean, who dares to predict the final league standing right now?

This is why you need more 4 or 5 more quality players. There's no way Villa can cope with 2 games a week in the long run with the amount of players they have.

I believe Mr. O'Neill gonna get shopping this coming January and nails some good signings, especially in defence 'cause I think Curtis Davies isn't a finished article yet...leggy and nervous at times, he reminds me of ex-Sheff Wednesday's Carlton Palmer...

No goals, but considering Man Utd's past matches result, I guess the goalless draw is good enough.

another impressive win by the villans, and gabby is making my investment in him in fantasy football count a lot!

for such a little guy, he sure takes on the role of single striker REALLY WELL.

Darrent Bent? Hm.. Let se, still quite young, loads of premiership experience, only score lots of goals at charton and have been quite OK with spurs so far.. I'll give my support if we buy him, because he is surely a lot beter than Harewood. hehe

Villa Cup hero Dixon dies at 85

QUOTE
user posted image
Johnny Dixon captained Villa to their last FA Cup win - back in 1957

Aston Villa's FA Cup-winning captain Johnny Dixon has died at the age of 85.

The inside forward, who could also play on the wing, spent 17 years as a player at Villa Park after joining from Spennymoor United in 1944.

The highlight of Dixon's career was captaining Villa to their last FA Cup victory, when they beat Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley in 1957.

Having scored in his last league game, against Sheffield Wednesday, he spent six years as a youth coach at the club.

The other highlight of Dixon's career was helping Villa get promoted to the old Division One in 1960.

Dixon, born and bred on Tyneside, spent the rest of his working life still in the West Midlands as an ironmonger before retiring in 1985.

Browsed the paper today and delighted that Capello have called-up Gareth, Gabby, Emile, Ashley, Luke and James Milner for the Spain's friendly with Gabby and Emile are likely to lead the attack. Great stuff! And I think Ashley's the answer to England's left midfield crisis prayer...

Thanks 4 the compliment...kind of reminds me of the mid 90's to the early 2000's when Beckham, both Nevilles, Butt, Scholes, Sheringham, Cole etc did the business for England...hopefully AV and MU will have a good run in the title chase..

yeah.. when was the last time we see 5 villa player might be performing for England? I can't remember... hehe... Great stuff.. It reminds me of the past liverpool (supplying england strikers in owen and heskey), and man utd (supplying the midfield in beckham, scholes) and arsenal (supplying the defence in adams and keown). What i would love to see us Villa supllying the whole department in england squad (upfront -gabby and heskey , mid - barry, milner, young, defence - davies and l.young).. That will b fantastic.

Although i am a Man Utd fan through and through, AV is also one of the teams in BPL that i hold high regards in. I am a person who likes a club that is build based on history and hardwork, not by pure cash. In fact, i am managing Aston Villa in my Football manager 2009 game, into my 4th season now, won the league 2 times and 1 Champions League tongue.gif

All the best in your hunt for glory, and hope you will secure a UCL spot, u guys will get big money, while limiting the other rivals of Man utd, a win-win situation laugh.gif

Just 4 discussion...currently, the best scenario is the Premiership title@UCL spot and FA trophy, but if we are to choose only one of them, which one do you all prefer? FA trophy and no UCL spot or UCL spot but another trophyless season?

Replying to Stonei's comments, I believe villa should strive for UCL possition rather than FA Cup glory. Why? We can participate the Fa Cup envery year, but not everytime we are in a pos to grab a UCL spot. Plus, it will boost our income greatly and great tv insentives as we are in the most lucurative competition in the world (in terms of club football). But if we can win the FA CUp, it will be massive also. Hope we can do it both (if gabby, milly, barry and ashly are not injured for a long time). just my 2 cent

Owh...That era....Perhaps you need a little reminder of a certain dutch striker called Ruud Van Nistelrooy and an Argentine midfielder called Juan Sebastian Veron. The former cost 19m while the latter cost almost 30m.That's season 2000-2001.

If you are talking about earlier seasons, alright, lets head back to season 1998–99.A total of almost £28million had been spent on signing Dwight Yorke, Jaap Stam and Jesper Blomqvist.

Dwight Yorke -£12.6 million
Jaap Stam -£10.6 million.
Jesper Blomqvist - £4.4 million.

Total:27.6m smile.gif

A season after that, Barthez joined in for £7.8....If that's what you call little money.... doh.gif

Oh.. lost to everton 3-1 yesterday in the FA Cup match. Carew looks out of ideas on the pitch, and a midfield lineup without Barry really looks weak since Petrov have to do both defending and distribute the ball to open up the play. Sidwell does not rise to the ocation lat night..

I believe villa will bounce back from this defeat and give a good perfomance againts CSK Moscow and Chelsea this week. Up the villa!!!

Yup, Carew did looked like your average striker in our "petang-petang" football game...and the Everton game also proved that MON need to keep Barry from leaving...

On the bright note, now we can launch an all out assault at the premiership title...Come on you lads! icon_idea.gif

Me too Ichighost. I believe we will peform much better than the last time we meet and villa lost helplessly 2-0 to you at the bridge. Actually I like it when villa meet chelsea. For the past years, vila have been consistent in making chelsea run for thier money. Still remember the 3-3 draw last season and the 1-1 draw where gabby scored a header for the equalizer. I was called by espn that day to give my review on the game. Hehe.. Also the famous Hitzlberger goal in the 1st year Roman took control of chelsea.. Lots of memories..

Sad to see that our team have been crashed out from UEFA Cup. But maybe its for the better. Our 1st team will be refreshed for the Stoke game. And we MUST win that game to push our CL 4th spot!

without Vidic, I could see ManU a bit struggle to cope with the physical presents of Carew & pace of Agbonlahor..

Huh? So realistic? What? Maybe it's because we are more concerned with talking about our club than other people? Do you feel the need to go into every thread just to increase your post count then? Do you need to come into another club's thread to make it a thing between your club and ours? Grow up and show Villa fans some respect.

As for your siggy... yeah I'm in tears now rolleyes.gif

Ok, Villa lost. At least my posting before the match, saying manU will struggle to cope with Carew & Agbonlahor had substance in it. We are sad,but not the end of the world. World does not revolve around that one match.

Villa's Laursen forced to retire

It was a sad news for all of us. Been following him since WC 2002 with Denmark. He is really a great player and Villa have lost a great defender in Laursen and, perhaps more importantly, the Premier League has lost a superb role model

Heard about the latest scrum between a manager and his player?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport...nd-bust-up.html

QUOTE
MARTIN O'NEILL and Nigel Reo-Coker grappled each other to the ground in an amazing training-ground bust-up yesterday.
It followed a heated exchange between the Aston Villa manager and his midfielder and the pair eventually had to be separated by shocked players.
One stunned onlooker said: "It was really heated and at one point they fell to the ground grappling with each other although no one was throwing punches or anything like that."
Reo-Coker has not hidden his anger about the way he has been in and out of the Villa team since his ?.5million move from West Ham two years ago.
He was unhappy at being substituted during Sunday's 1-0 win over Birmingham.
And the player also objected at being played out of position, at right-back, last season. The unrest finally spilled over during training yesterday

Can anybody recall a recent WWF between a manager and his player other than above?

Stephen Warnock basks in Villa sun after escaping Liverpool's shadows
QUOTE
Stephen Warnock looks a little embarrassed as he listens to some of the comments posted on an Aston Villa supporters' website about his impact at the club since he arrived from Blackburn Rovers in the summer. From "Martin O'Neill's best signing since he came to the club" to "Wayne Bridge isn't fit to lace his boots on this season's performances" and "could be our best left-back for a decade", the praise is endless.

It is little wonder that O'Neill is so delighted with his £8m recruit and no surprise that the defender has returned to Fabio Capello's thoughts, having been called up for last month's friendly against Brazil. Comfortable on the ball and tenacious in the tackle, Warnock has emerged as a genuine threat to Bridge for the second left-back spot in Capello's World Cup squad. All of which must make Rafael Benítez feel a little uncomfortable.

It was, after all, a little less than three years ago that the Liverpool manager allowed Warnock to leave Anfield for £1.5m. That decision is looking increasingly like an error of judgment, especially given the problems Benítez has experienced in the left-back position, with the £7m splurged on Andrea Dossena a case in point. Yet if Liverpool are missing Warnock, there is no suggestion that the feeling is mutual.

Having made 67 appearances for Liverpool between 2004 and 2007 without ever nailing down a regular first-team place, Warnock knew he had to get out. "My only regret about Liverpool is that I didn't leave earlier," he said ahead of Villa's trip to Manchester United today. "I was in and out the team at Liverpool but I felt that I was capable of playing in the Premier League and I knew that if I went somewhere else I could get myself back into a top club."

For Warnock, the defining point in his Liverpool career came in May 2005, when he missed out on the chance to be part of one of the greatest nights in the club's history after Benítez made a decision that, quite understandably, still rankles. "I remember getting in the Champions League final squad and being absolutely delighted, going home and telling all the family," said Warnock. "And then I got a phone call from the assistant manager, not even the manager, to say, 'We've made a mistake on the squad, one of the other players has been added in and you've been taken out.' He [Josemi] had been injured, played one game that year and was back in the squad. I have never felt more betrayed. Not getting a phone call from the manager, I felt, was pretty weak.

"It was just so disappointing. The Champions League final is your childhood dream. Even if you don't get on, just to be involved and in and around it was a fantastic thing. My family were over the moon, my mum and dad were proud as anything, and then you have to ring them and say 'I'm not in it now'.

"I went on the pitch after the game. It was one of those moments where you are made up for the team, especially as I'm a Liverpool fan, but I felt gutted that I wasn't involved in the celebrations. It put a dampener on everything and, to be honest, I wanted to leave after that moment. I just thought, what's the point if he hasn't got the decency to talk to me himself and explain the situation? And I've never been told since."

For Warnock, who is an engaging and highly likeable character, Istanbul was the second of three major disappointments under Benítez. Earlier that year he had been left out of the Carling Cup final squad despite playing in every previous round and, the following season, was again forced to watch a showpiece occasion from the stands when Benítez omitted him from his 16-man party for the FA Cup final against West Ham United.

"I actually got given a medal in that FA Cup final because we didn't get one in the Champions League final, even though we had been involved in the earlier games," said Warnock. "We got to the final and he [Benítez] came over to us on the pitch and said 'here's a medal'. I remember saying, 'What for?' It was like a token gesture.

"I thought enough's enough. I want to go somewhere where I can be involved and get into a team where we're capable of doing something and I can be part of it and proud of an achievement. That's why the Carling Cup final this year is so important to me. To get to that final and play in it and win it would mean so much after missing out on things like that at Liverpool."

While it is safe to assume Benítez will not be receiving a Christmas card, Warnock has only good things to say about Liverpool and the supporters. He remains indebted to the club for the way they helped him recover from the trauma of breaking his leg three times as a teenager, and he will never forget the ovation he received in April when he placed a floral tribute in front of the Kop on behalf of Blackburn to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy.

"That was a massive honour to do that," he said. "I felt really privileged to be asked and the reception I got was absolutely fantastic. I was a bag of nerves walking down there. It was tough to do. I grew up with one of the lads at Liverpool who was a goalkeeper whose dad died at Hillsborough so I just kept on thinking about him as I was walking down and that choked me up."

Little did Warnock know at the time that it would also turn out to be one of his last games for Blackburn. He had no desire to leave Ewood Park but the opportunity to join Villa was too good to turn down at a critical juncture in his career. "I thought this is what I want, to challenge myself and to be at a club fighting to get into the top four which I know the club are capable of doing," said Warnock, who celebrates his 28th birthday today.

That Capello is a regular visitor to Villa Park to run the rule over the six England internationals in O'Neill's squad is an added bonus. Warnock knows, however, that he faces a "tough fight" to supplant Bridge as Ashley Cole's understudy in time for South Africa and he has no intention of dwelling on what may or may not happen. "It would mean everything to go to the World Cup but I'm not going to get carried away and start thinking about it."

Having played eight minutes as a substitute when he won his first and only senior cap, against Trinidad & Tobago 18 months ago, Warnock shares the dubious honour of having the shortest England career, although, with some justification, he sees no reason to regard it as a record to be embarrassed about. "Obviously I want to play for longer," he said. "I want to win loads of caps but at least I can always say that I played for my country."

If the Villa fans get their way there will be plenty more opportunities in the years to come. "It's nice to hear those things," said Warnock. "But I never worry about what people say. As long as you are putting it in, you should get a little bit of respect. I know I'm probably not, technically, the most gifted player in the world but I try to give my all every game. And if people are happy with what they're seeing then that's great."

Sold him for 1.5m, bought Andrea Dossena for 7m a few years later. Guess now we know why Rafa complains he doesn't have that much fund for transfers.

Aston Villa's defence have been outstandingly awesome this season. New signings Collins and Dunne have adapted really well to the team and Carlos Cuéllar is doing really well too. Even without gareth barry, players like ashley young, james milner, petrov and agbonlahor have not failed to shine this season.

Another lost..the manager must act fast or we're gonna stuck in this unthinkable relegation battle 4 the rest of the season..a signing or two is badly needed especially in the form of proven attacking midfielder & striker..and would somebody please tell Mr Houlier that hit & run tactic was already dead back in the 80's...

A couple of hours from the season opener & no comment on here, where have all the Villans gone?

I personally do not go along with the ground swell of negativity currently adopted by Villa supporters. They have just sold Downing and got a far better replacement in Nzog for half the money......great bit of business.

The 2 players to watch for this season are Barry Bannan & Gary Gardner.

Bannan is the more familiar name because of his emergence last season & he is a great little footballer with a terrific eye for a pass.

Gardner (Gary) is the younger brother of new Sunderland signing & former Villan Craig. He is an exceptional talent who Real Madrid were monitoring until an unfortunate cruciate knee injury a year ago.

These two have the potential to become Villa stalwarts & help to re-establish Villa in the higher echelons of the premier league. Ok maybe not this season but the future is bright with so many talented youngsters emerging from what is reputed to be the best football academy in the UK.

p.s......Villa to shade a 2-1 victory in the opener at Craven Cottage wink.gif

Well, it ended goalless but I felt there were quite a few positives to be taken from that game.

Dunne was immense as was Given in helping Villa to a clean sheet.

I thought that was the best game I have seen Delph play in a Villa shirt.

N'Zogbia did well but I expect a lot more from him as the season progresses.

If the defence remains that tight throughout the season then Bent will score the goals to give us a top half finish.

All in all, I was fairly happy with a point.

After our 1st away win this season with Bolton (which surely we expect to beat), things are going a bit better in terms of team morale ahead of today's Liverpool match. With downing returning back to Villa Park (when he didi say he will continue to stay even if Villa got relegated last season), it will definitely spice up the game even more. My hope that we keep the formation against Bolton with 2 wingers and play attacking football. Lookout for the trickery of Suarez and we might frustrate Liv today. 1-0 to villa with Bent scoring a Marc assist today! Up the villa!
