iPhone Newbie here ...

I am referring to iPhone 3G !

People always using wrong description about unlock or jailbreak ...

Can someone explain more ..

Does it means that buying unlock or locked iphone does not mean much different ?

Locked - Tied to the telco carrier
Unlocked - Can use any telco carrier
Jailbreak - Can install FREE 3rd party application thru installer or cydia ..

So, even we buy a locked version of iphone, after we jailbreak using pwnage / quickpwn /winpwn /etc we still able to any telco carrier + install 3rd party application

Why we need to buy unlocked iphone ? ( since we can use jailbreak to the locked phone using any telco carrier )

Pwnage tools cannot unlock the 3G baseband yet - ( what does it means ? Cannot use other telco 3G ? )

Conclusion ? Locked or unlock version , you still need to run the pwnage tools to jailbreak your iphone to intsall 3rd party application for FREE ..

no.. jailbreak is still jailbreak.. it wont change ur iphone to unlocked..

unlocked is totally different stories... Apple didnt care on how u jailbreak it.. caz u jailbreak dy, u will juz make their ipod touch o iphone more stronger..

unlocked is unlocked to any carrier of u wan to use.. afta u jailbreak it, it will LOCKED!!!

U already clearly state down all the term v description. U said jailbreak is to allow free 3rd party I stallation etc...jailbreak is not unlock!! U clear now? Don't understand wat is your confusion here.U look funny to me

rkwan67, does you means a locked iPhone 3G then you run the pwnage tools ( it will enable you to use any carrier network right ) ? Please correct me if I wrong

If we got unlocked iPhone 3G , we need to run Pwnage Tools method.

U sill did not get the point.A pwnage tool will NOT ABLE.NOT ABLE, again NOT ABLE to unlock iPhone3G. The pwnage will only allow u to jailbreak iPhone so u can install unofficial 3rd party software.Clear now ?

you cant use any telco carrier even if you jailbreak it if your iphone3g is a locked version , as you can only use the carrier that your iphone3g is locked to

however, after Jailbreak it, you can install 3rd party apps at cydia/installer


2nd question:

unlocked iphone at the mean time, unless you willing to use hardware unlock like turbosim, or wait dont know how long until dev team release new pwnage tool that can unlock iphone3g

you jailbreak your iphone3g is to install 3rd party apps, not to unlocked your iphone3g

Now let see if a noob like me can make some sense to myself, so correct me if I am wrong. This is what I understand so far.

A lock 3G iphone is a phone that is sold by a certain telco in that particular country with a contract like 2 year at an attractive discounted price like US$199/. So in order that you stick to the contract they program the iPhone so that it can only use its own SIM card which is widely known as a LOCK phone.

So currently there is NO SOFTWARE available to UNLOCK a LOCK 3G iPhone. The only to unlock is via a Turbo SIM or physical modification which I read from here is a big NO NO.


.... so far am I on the right track


Now about Jailbreak commonly know as JB.

All iphone Lock and Unlock can only install approved apple iphone software from itune store so in a sense it is in a Jail.

We need to JailBreak it in order for us to install 3rd party software via Cydia or Installer or SSH to the iphone.

A LOCK iphone can be jailbreak but still LOCK to its own telco carrier
An Unlock iPhone if not modified would still be in Jail.

Am I making any sense...

Yup, so as for conclusion, get an Unlock unit instead of Locked one. That's all.
