i've got some questions here

1 - Between Western Digital Caviar Black, Blue and Green, which one is best for my use? Thinking using it as my main OS drive. I want to get the 320GB/500GB Black, but i don't think it's easy to find here..usually i only see Blue ones around..

2 - What's the difference between normal single drive and setting up drives in RAID 5? I don't think i'll be using RAID 1 or 0, coz i prefer having both speed and backup, but prefer speed a bit more. Which one would be better?

I wouldn't recommend you on using green drive if you're a performance freak.

Get a WD 640AAKS also known as WD 640 Blue

Its really fast for your main OS, i would say the rank for OS speed
1. SSD / Raid 0
2. WD Raptor's
3. WD 640 Blue
4. Samsung F1

all based on my opinion smile.gif your can do your research
*
i see, if i use raid 0 i need to have 2 identical drives together isn't it?

well if that compared to the 640GB Blue benchmark posted previously, the Blue is having better transfer rates, only the Black has faster seek times hmm.gif

so does this say that WD Blue ~= WD Black?

i think 5 different folders should do. you're gonna have headache if you make 5 partitions, especially when you wanna keep stuff not categorized under those 5 types.

I'm currently using WD green 640GB as my primary OS partition, so far so good, no major signs of slowdown whatsoever. maybe there's that slight difference compared to the WD blue or black version, but i doubt you'll really notice it.

As for storing movies/anime, it should do fine smile.gif

in some cases you are able to retrieve using software, if can't then you can try professional data backup services. but that's gonna cost you quite some money.

i don't know about the cooling fan, but the formatting thing isn't true. formatting doesn't affect your hard disk life. you can format everytime, your hard disk will still run as it is.

yeah i got my hitachi from viewnet also. but sadly it failed on me a week ago. i dont really have an idea wha actually happened to it. i took it out so that i could clean my pc, didn't place it on the floor to avoid static, after that it ran fine, but then started to have cranking sound, and caused my pc to hang. it's still covered by 3 years 1-1 warranty by mlink. anyone rma-ed hitachi hdds before?

The average speed ranges between 60 MB/s to 220 MB/s, depending on your SATA storage device.
Yes, it's meaningless information because you didn't give enough details. tongue.gif
You need to know your hard disk model first, then you can either google for information or ask us about it.
Burst speed is meaningless, because it only last for less than a second. Sustained throughput rate and random read/write are far more important.
here's the benchmark that i've done:
