hi, i am thinking of replacing my old P4 rig with a new AMD system...

currently wat's in my mind is:

Biostar TA790GX XE
Athlon x2 5000+ BE
CM GeminII S

others are all old parts, using the onboard Radeon HD 3300

pls note that i will be using a mATX chasis...

i ve a CM Extreme Power Plus 460W to go with it...

however, my question is:

1) should i get 5000+ BE and OC it, or get a 5600+/6000+?? considering that i am totally new to AMD systems...

2) the mobo good?? it's one of the few mATX 790GX i can find in the market... i know DFI has got another one that comes with CF, but i wouldn't be needing it...

[edit]

oops... it should be 790GX instead... pai seh...

nothing serious...

mainly Internet, media center, BT and stuff... no hardcore gaming (for now, at least)

and also to get a hand on OC-ing a AMD system... have been using Intel all the while (P1, P3, P4, C2D...)

If like that, 5000+BE should be fine. But make sure you opt for a HSF also since it doesn't come with one IIRC.

yup, that's y the CM GeminII S heatsink... it's pretty small for a heatsink and should fit in my chasis...

Better take Phenom x3 and OC to 2.8~3.0 ghz :claps:

790GX would be waste w/o Phenom...since ACC features only works with Phenom biggrin.gif

okok, after much due consideration, how abt this??

Athlon x2 4850E
Giga GA-MA78GPM-DS2H

CPU is cheaper by $20+ while CPU is $20 more expensive...

ve read reviews that 4850e can OC pretty well...

considered 4850e since the rig is for nothing too demanding... 45W is a pretty nice number for HTPC... for gaming, well, that will leave to the future rig i suppose...

CPU is okay for the tasks you specified. But with that new mobo option, you will lose some gaming performance(but that is irrelevant eh?). But probably not so much considering it has sideport memory also.

The 4850e has a TDP of 45W. Theoretically, it should OC well as you said. But of course it might become a hassle when OCing since it does not have an unlock multi like the 5000+BE.

well, i dun mind the drop in performance since like i ve said, it for nothing serious...

besides HD 3200 with SidePort and HD 3300's performance difference is mainly due to the core clock...

as for OC, i think i'll only do some mild OC, nothing serious like i ve said...

however, issit worth spending SG$20 for SidePort and Ultra Durable 2??

thx for the suggestion but i think i'll give it a miss this time round...

i dun think a HTPC really need such a mid-high CPU...

besides, i am planning to keep it running 24/7, so i quite like the 4850e's TDP and temperature...

and since it's my first AMD system, perhaps start with something cheap first...
