I've recently purchased 4 gb of RAM for my laptop, which is currently using vista 32bit. I found out that this os does not support up to 4gb, and that i need to use a 64bit version of vista to fully utilize the 4gb....so here's my question: Is there a definite way to be sure my laptop can support a 64bit version of vista? Because i heard that not all processors can support 64bit. and if it can't, is there a way to somehow divert the unused RAM to my gc? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

yes - if the 64-bit hardware drivers available for Vista x64, then your hardware is compatible with Vista x64.
the amount of usable RAM in your Vista x86 is really up the system configuration... it might vary from from a system to another system.

Not everyone needs > 4GB of RAM. 32-bit OS will only allocate max 2GB of memory to a single 32-bit application; so basically you are on the safe side even if you have only 3GB of ram. More RAM is required if you are running memory intense applications like virtualization, video/photo editing etc.
