I managed to get WindowsXP pro original OEM CD from my company as my company is no longer using them. But on the CD cover it's written "Includes Service Pack 1a". that's mean it's sp1 right?
If i turn on the automatic updates, will it be updated to sp2? hmm.gif

Thanks in advance  notworthy.gif
*
yes sp1

Yes, it will update. as long as it is legal and original.

But technically OEM license is non transferable and illegal if you want to do what you said earlier. It should only be installed in the PC that the OEM license was purchased with. That's why it is called OEM.

Previously the CPU that uses this CD-key is using Vista Business now. that means now no pc is using the CD-key. If i install this OS to my pc, will microsoft detect it as genuine windows?
*
yes if u can install icon_idea.gif

This is bad sad.gif

What will happen if i install it into more than 2 CPU?  hmm.gif

Sorry that i ask too many question cos all this time i'm using jack sparrow edition software and i'm not exposed to genuine software >_<
*
if the cd is activated more than 2 times, u need to call microsoft to activate it manually.

Ok... interesting topic. This is what I know.

1. Installing OEM licensed on another machine.
Microsoft does not openly oppose to this, but to most of us, that's a nod to the other direction. Just don't have more than 1 PC with it and you should be legal. 2 PCs can be done, but no one wanna know that one.

2. Installing OEM on a machine.
This is the fun part. The machine would have to be new. The interesting part being, Microsoft never quite said ANYTHING on how many percent had to be new neither, my sources from Microsoft told me it could be as little as a new set of keyboard and mouse, but you never heard it from me.

3. Installing on another machine and activating it.
See, I dont' understand this part fully. You can install up to 2 machines with same key without problems in a short duration, (say about 2~3 months) wont' bug you as much unless you change hardwares of the said machines. Reinstall during this period and you're screwed, you'll have to call up Microsoft and talk to them about the re-installing and they'll provide you with the activation keys.

4. Installing XP Home using OEM license (Legal) for another machine.
You can install it by visiting your local ah beng if you lost the cd, or transfering from another machine of a different make. It wouldn't make a difference, and most probably those CD that came preinstalled by their machine's maker would be tied to their specific product. It'll probably cause some problem for you when you install it into another machine.

5. Installing XP Pro?
Ok, you can't do this. I'm pretty sure, especially those machines that came with XP Pro 1~2 License User things. I don't think those came with Professional licenses are of OEM or are capable of it. Most of the makers seem to use a specific licensed CD for these. So if you're installing this without the CD or on another machine, you're pretty much out of luck. You can still try it tho. Welcome to dispute this.

6. Will it update?
If you can install it, yes it'll update. That's the short answer of it.

AFAIK, Windows XP Professional also comes in OEM package. Plus usually sticker stamped on your OEM PC's casing are probably dummy Product Key, you have to dig out the real Product Key inside your PC. I've already successfully reinstalled Windows XP Pro OEM license with Retail CD and vice versa, no problem.

That's why, get nLite and slipstream SP1 to those SP1/SP1a CD. Faster, no need to manual install the service pack. rolleyes.gif

Bro, you don't need SP2 to install SP3. Last time I had a Windows disc without any SP's pre-slipstreamed, I directly install SP3 into it and it work.

SP1a is same as SP1, it just have Java Virtual Machine (JVM) removed from the SP package because of the lawsuit filed by Sun Microsystems. That's why you never see JVM on SP1 and later SP. Only handful of old Microsoft product(s) such as Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 that still have JVM bundled.
