Can anyone suggest to me which brand/model to get for a nice acoustic guitar and where to get it (pref near or in subang). I'm upgrading from a classical and am self learning so got no teacher to turn to for advice. Budget rm300-rm500. Thanks.

Try the brand SX or Farida... They are in the price range and are quite good entry level guitars... You'll be able to find these brands at those big name guitar shops around KL (don't know about Subang though)

I might wanna add Stagg.
It's just bout a hit and miss as SX, but I actually managed to pick one which sounds pretty darn good for 400 bucks.

That's great! Ok, yamaha it is, first on the list for trying out at the shop.. thanks guys. I'll post back once I've been to one. Just one question though, f210, 330, 310. Are they in the same model ranges as in an updated version in the same class or just different in some other ways. thanks. XD

im not sure about yamaha f330, but as for f210 and f310 i tried before.

the sound is almost the same, though i like the tone of f310 more.
the fret of f210 is wider compared to f310, to get a better idea, it is always good to go with a friend who is good in guitar and experience the guitar in music stores, normally they allow testing the guitar...

I've heard this model has an electro-acoustic version. Could you tell me more about that and the price please. Also, does the extra effect the acoustic quality. Thanks ^^

Just borrowing a space here. Also looking for an acoustic. Budget for the guitar ranges from 500-800. Of course with electro-acoustic. With an amp and a speaker for it. Budget for both around 1500..

I know when it comes to guitars, it all comes from your own ears but would like to know some good brands for my price range. Been playing on a not-so-good nylon acoustic for almost 4 years now. Thanks

Hmmm... good question, I was looking into the cutaway too but most guitar shops quoted me more than rm600 which is out of my budget...

Do remember that concert sized cutaway guitars don't sound full acoustically when unplugged... They only sound good amplified.. If you want a good sounding acoustic guitar unplugged, you'll still need a dreadnaught or a jumbo cutaway...

Ok, thanks. ^^ I dont think my arms are long enough to play a jumbo comfortably so that rules the cutaways out I guess.

i'm not really comfortable with dreadnoughts and i do tend to solo in high frets with acoustics. i've tried one stagg concert with cutaway, but i don't recall the model. that one was quite good and comfortable.

Do you guys have any suggestion for a starting point for me to buy my guitar? I have no idea where to start hunting around the Klang Valley. Also any tips while buying? Thanks.

P.S I'm leaning towards (almost 99% getting) the yamaha f310 but would like to try other models while there.

Strap button? Is it the thing at the bottom of the guitar?

For some reason my guitar string broke 3 days after I bought it. But I've since got the whole set replaced. Love the sound... lovely. The body is a bit big (or my arms are just too short XD) but after a while, I dont notice it anymore.

Hmm, I bought my guitar stand separate when I was still with my classical guitar. It costs me rm35, but I didn't haggle (was not in the mood). Stock strings were ok, but mine broke unsure.gif I changed to D'Addarop 20/80 gauge .10 but I find the sound too "thin" and the brilliance (how to describe?) fade after a few days.

well most of the yamaha's ive tried are the entry level ones. and they sound pretty decent to me.
the f310 looks quite nice.
take a look at xannava's one above!
looks damn nice right?

anyway, about the cutaway wan. maybe u try looking for yamaha models. i not sure whether they do have it at the price range or not. u should ask the other ppls here.
u want cutaway to do solos? notworthy.gif

I went to a guitar shop before, according to them their cheapest cutaway was rm600+ Those at yamaha I saw all above rm1k so dunno whether got cheaper (give them a call or visit them eh?) That's also one of the reason why I settled with a non cutaway.. out of budget.

Yeah, still can play solo on my f310, only after the 16th fret it gets a bit awkward. But still playable, am learning a solo song, and its not too difficult reaching.

Well tat not really truth.
I myself own a cutaway semi-acoustic guitar, brand is santa cruz.
The cutaway is the reason i bought it. It didnt cost me more than RM400.
It's been 2years since i bought it. (Still cant solo) cry.gif

Now, I wanna get F310 since this thread started.
Make me so tempted 2get 1. I don care about the cutaway anymore.

If u interested?? brows.gif
PM me, coz i wanna let it off.

Hehe, me noob at guitar so my only experience is with a crappy old brandless classical and my current f310.

Added on October 16, 2008, 10:37 pmOoh, and yeah.. I'm fussy with colour aso... but thankfully mine is "natural" and most guitars come in that colour XD

bout the stagg, 1 of my friend were playing it b4 while we were out on a camp. pretty decent tho i firstly tot it was a kapok guitar!

Really it all depends on you. Go and test the guitars out la. See which one feels nicer to you. Word of caution though, if you have short arms like me, the f310 butt is kinda large and takes some getting used too.

Thanks
*
I'm also looking for electronic-acoustic. Have you guys tried Fina?
Fina has lots of good model for rm600-800 range.
I saw this guitar selling rm680. I bargained it until rm610. But I haven't bought yet. You guys can take a look of it in this link.

if 300-400 range.. why don't u try the range of samick acoustic guitar @ Do Re Mi.., i bought mine there., in fact i have 2 samick acoustic.. and 1 samick cobra electric guitar..

i found that samick produces a good quality guitar with a price range that's affordable to beginner musician.

go and test for yourself.., i am for one that don't really believe in splurgin my money just to own a good brand.. !

brand doesn't mean anything to me if it cost me a bomb to own it.. smile.gif

figure this - fancy a RM1,000 plus range yamaha guitar sound? but have budget below 500? - go try samick.. !

heh.. i sounded like a samick salesman ya? no.. i'm not..! just 1 of the happy samick customer..

Morrison? YUI?

I know she used Martins (and still do)
If she ever used anything close to Morrison
it would be Morris guitars, and don't let it be mistaken with Morrison
Morris guitars used to be Martin copies until they came up with their own custom shop models. If YUI started off early I quite doubt she started with a Martin, a Morris would be much better.

And just to note, Morris guitars never retailed lower than 20 000 JPY back in the 1970s and was regarded as one of the finer guitars, similar to how Japanese made guitars are regarded now.

**Oh I just did a search, YUI used a Morris W-35 which is a Martin D-35 copy. I'll link it up if there is a request.

Given that, F-310 was introduced in 1999 (In US), but the FG-402 has been around since 1970s (oldest one I know of is in 1975).

Then you'd look at the palm tree inlay on the headstock.
The one on the F-310 is smaller, and it doesn't extend till the machine heads, where else it does on the FG-402.

I don't know whether it's confirmed, but my observation tells me very much it's a FG-402.

Today i went to check at 1 shop.

The boss recommend me santa cruz acoustic guitar which cost Rm230 (He didn't tell the model when i ask him).

Then he keep saying that yahama is not as good as wat people say la, only malaysians think tat yamaha is good but at overseas people seldom use yamaha guitar...

He also says that he is well known guitarist and wont sell rubbish stock in his shop. So he say that for beginners like me use tat santa cruz will be ok.

So, what do u think? What is say is truth or he is just trying to sell is products?
As a beginner, i don't really know how to differentiate the quality of the sound of the guitar...

definitely just trying to sell his products

while it is true that too many ppl here recommend the yamahas way too much, it is true that they are good guitars for the price.. for less than rm300, you will not find many other guitars as good as the yamaha f310, which is so easily found in shops as well as in the classifieds

as an alternative, check out ck music.. jalan imbi in kl.. they have a brand called custom acoustic, which is pretty well-priced for the materials used

if u can find brands like sx, fina, etc, they are pretty good for low price also

oh, santa cruz sold here are fakes.. doesn't surprise me if the products are rip-offs in terms of material and construction

my first acoustic was an Ashton D25 (i think that's the model no.). costs around 300+. Swapped the standard strings for a set of D'addarios, and for a beginner guitar I couldn't have been less happier. Saw someone selling Ashtons in Garage Sales. For a lesser known brand, the sound is pretty good i'd say.

Easy to test if the guy is trying to cheat you - i.e.

If he only carries 1 brand of guitar and says that brand is the best, then he's lying (which, sad to say, is like 70% of the shops you go to)...

Classical... Yamaha C-40 is good. My friend has it, I've played it, and it's loud for a classical. I'm not an avid fan of the classical guitar though, more of a fan of Steel string acoustics. smile.gif

Just my 2 cents for those who wants to get a guitar but plans to get a cheap one (Rm150 and below):
1. Find out what's the reason to learn to play a guitar, if you just want to learn it and are satisfied with just playing a few chords, or able to play a few songs, then get a cheap one, it's enough.
2. If you're planning to go far (wanna serve in church, wanna play in a band), invest in a good one (preferably with a pickup). I started out with F-210 (4 years ago) and it's still in my room, still playable, and it's good. I've tried F-310, great quality for a RM300++ guitar, I recommend it. Now I'm using CPX-700, great guitar, Yamaha also. Reason: Ease of mind, coz their quality is great. Check out videos of CPX-700 in youtube.
3. If you initially plan to learn a guitar, but later realised that you wanna go far, then all the best!
4. If you plan to learn in order to impress a girl, or try to get girls, unless you're good, you'll definitely fail (i'm the real testimony, stepped out of it already, hahaha)

Don't go for cheap ones, seriously, you'll end up putting in aside and let it collect dust. Get a good one, something that you like to look at, then you'll be drawn to "touch" it everyday, and that will definitely make you improve! smile.gif

God bless and all the best in learning and playing the guitar! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I second the C40! I have one and it is my first and only classical.

Listen to bro Terence above me, he's right. I learned on a crap 12-15 year old Rhythm guitar and almost lost interest if not for my classical (which turned into a strumming guitar). Now I bought a new acoustic (solid top and all the good stuff) and am trying to get back to where I should be.

At least go for RM 300+. C40 only RM 360 (bought it in 2006).

Good for you bro! The C40M is the matte finish version right? Yellow colour top? Mine is the 'normal' lacquer finish with a cedar-looking spruce top.

Hope you have fun with it smile.gif .

Okay lah, to drag this thread back to steel strings, the Takamine D21 (or D25, can't remember) in Bentley is realli nice for a laminate top. It doesn't even have that funny muffled 'laminate' sound. I thought it was solid top at first. The inside of the sound hole painted black.

Only RM 500+, a bit over this thread's budget but it's a Takamine and it sounds amazing. Normally Takamine a bit on the bright side like Taylor but the one I played was nice and deep. Must be because it's a dreadnought. Spruce top, mahogany sides and back. Rosewood fretboard and bridge. Binding also nice, cream color

The Ibanez V-series also looks okay. In Bentley. Black colour dread. It comes with a jampack. I didn't play it though.

Aiyah I still want that tobacco burst Guild I played. RM 3500 sweat.gif

wow.. I jsut finished reading page 1-8! fuhhh

I heard there's lotsa good comments about farida guitars.. and I remembered someone recommended fina guitars?I'm pretty interested in trying these non-uber-branded kinds since my budget is pretty tight and I've long decided that brand is not that important if I were to choose the quality over names...

I'm still contemplating on letting go these acoustic of mine or jst continue it with installing a built in pickup =(

good thread! biggrin.gif

What a thread. *clap*

Something i had in mind that i think i should asked before i purchase a guitar.

1.)For beginners like me, does cut away really matters?

2.)What are the most important aspects that beginners like me must take note of before purchasing a guitar?

3.)For me, F310, the no.1 recommended guitar in this thread, is unfortunately "kinda" big although I've heard many good comments about its sound quality and affordability. I hope all of you F310 fans out there can share your no.2 choice(s) as alternatives. (Budget = RM 400)

4.)For a budget of RM 400, do you recommend me to go for an elec/acoustic guitar or just use pickups? (I dont know why but i just think an elec/acoustic is much "cooler" and not to mention you can amplify the guitar)

5.)For a budget of RM 400, for a "passionate" beginner like me, do I go for the good acoustic guitar around that price or elec/acoustic guitar around that price?

Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about dreadnought size?
The picture you attached is dreadnought with cutaway.
Typically for those guitar with built in preamp.

For sound wise, I like dreadnought sound but i dont like the size of the guitar coz it's big for a small lady like me.. but dreadnought would sound better, fuller sound compare to smaller body guitar.
For acoustic guitar, farida guitar good at its price. Cutaway doesn't really matter unless you wanna play solo on higher fret.
If you really passionate about guitar, you should save up more, AT LEAST get a solid top guitar for better sound, i think you can get it around rm700, brand like fina or some other brands. Try ask the shopkeeper what's the cheapest solid top guitar you can in their shop.

Usually sifu(not me) rarely touch and play cheap guitar anymore. Unless you request for high end guitar. Most of them only talk about high end guitar.
It's because with your budget 300-400, they can't recommend any good 1 except yamaha F310. Just go to music shops and ask the shopkeeper to recommend.

At last, got a Takamine, not solid top, but with cutaway and preamp. And I like Sunburst colour also. smile.gif

But Kelv's has a preamp. I think with the money he paid for his guitar, you can get a solid top liao. That is, if you don't want to amplify it. Solid top electro-acoustics are normally 1k and above.

The best is, you go in the shops and try. Keep trying and finding till you found the one you like (and within your budget).
I went to a shop in Sg. Wang, tested SX and Yamaha which is way too disappointing for me.

Yes, a Tanglewood guitar. You can find it on Guitar Collection Malaysia's website. The cheapest Yamaha solid top is RM 800-1000. The FG-700S.

I'll suggest the Yamaha because for that price range, you get a very nice sound with a Yamaha acoustic guitar.

I can't really remember the model but I recently bought my friend a Yamaha acoustic guitar for RM 350 and it has a very nice sound.

I fell in love with the Tanglewood TB Big Baby guitar..

Actually, I was considering the Yamaha FG JR1 guitar, looking for a small-sized guitar. Then I saw Tanglewood's..

Anyone tried either one of these 2 guitars before? Is Tanglewood's Big Baby much better, and worth the (roughly) RM150 difference in price?

Sorry, tertumpang this thread. biggrin.gif
