Since this is a Handphone and Telecommunication section, I will be providing details related to handphone only, no detailed GPS explanation will be included. This FAQ is not fully written by me and I copy, edit and compile them for easy reference by LYN member. Tutorials are written by me. Anyone can feel free to post question and find any error made by me and I will get the FAQ updated.

Okay, I have a Smartphone with built-in GPS receiver or a Smartphone with external GPS receiver and have the basic understanding of GPS. How do install the software to use the GPS?

Symbian:

Nokia Map
Most of the Symbian OS 9.1 and above comes with Nokia Map in their firmware. Nokia Map is Smart2Go and being used by Nokia in Symbian firmware. Nokia Map is the most simple Navigation Software because you don’t have to install it as it comes preloaded in the firmware. There are 2 version of Nokia Map, which is version 1 and 2. Most of the Nokia Map comes with Symbian OS is version 1, but in the latest V30 firmware of N82 , N95, N95 8GB, it comes with version 2 of Nokia Map. Nokia Map need to be installed into phone memory and if you want to use the new version of Nokia Map, you can download it here http://www.nokia.com.my/A41159293 and select the correct model then follow the instruction there and install it into your phone (Make sure you have around 10MB free memory in PHONE MEMORY).

Now what you need to do is install Malaysia Map. To install Map into memory card, you need to download Nokia Map Loader. In the same website http://www.nokia.com.my/A41159293 , you can download the latest Nokia Map Loader. NOTE: Before you run Nokia Map loader, you need to start Nokia Map in your phone with memory card inserted into the phone at least once so that Nokia Map Loader will recognize later. Now connect your phone through MASS STORAGE to PC and run Nokia Map Loader. It will now detect your phone. Choose what Navigation Voice and the Country of the MAP you want to install. After Nokia Map Loader finished downloading the MAP, it will copy into your memory card and now you should be able to view those map you downloaded earlier in your phone.

Garmin Mobile XT General Guide

I will try to make this as general as possible. No guide to AHEM AHEM it will be written here. Don't PM me for LINK or Guide to AHEM it. I will not entertain all the PMs. Remember, GOOGLE is your best friend.

Garmin provide a FREE version of Garmin Mobile XT, HOWEVER you can only use it with GARMIN BRAND of Bluetooth GPS receiver, it won't detect any other bluetooth receiver under 1. Use Bluetooth GPS (see screenshot provided below) or internal GPS receiver by Smartphone/PDA. Usually it comes in Memory card that plug into your Smartphone/PDA when you buy GPS 10x. So it will only detect GPS 10x. (GPS 10x is a GPS receiver produced by Garmin)

The package is Garmin Mobile 10 or Garmin Mobile 20 (discontinued).

In order to use it with Internal GPS or other brand of GPS receiver you have to purchase the original Licence and it will be able to detect other brand of GPS receiver/Internal GPS receiver under 2. Use Attached/Built-in GPS receiver.

Malsing Map

The reason why most of Malaysian and Singaporean use Garmin is because of MALSING map. It is the map which is updated frequently by the Malsing community based on the contribution of the user. To download the Malsing MAP, here on here

http://www.malsingmaps.com/portal/downloads.php

Download Free S'pore & West M'sia Map for (Peninsula Malaysia and singapore) or Free East M'sia Map (Sabah Sarawak).

Then click on the GMAPSUPP for MXT Symbian. Place the downloaded IMG file into Garmin Folder in ROOT memory card.

There is a GOLD version for members who contributed to the community. In order to use that version, you have to contribute POI (Point of Interest to the Forum - Read Malsing Forum for more info) or bug to them. Then you can request the KEY to unlock the GOLD MAP. However someone leak the gold map, google for it, the keyword is Malsing GOLD v2.30

Malfreemap

Another Map for Malaysian and Singaporean besides Malsing MAP.

PMed to you oledi but it's good to highlight again the history..Infact abit of sad history  doh.gif  sad.gif ...Malsingmaps started off wth Adilothman (M'sia) & Aprivate (Singapore), In between, others such as antyong, jmleng, noah, berngps & more joined in & resulted in MSM as what it's Today, However in 2006, there is a differerences between few mappers and resulted on the 1st word of war in believer of opensource & mappers' owned maps.

Then nearing to 2007 & continue till Aug'08, survey was put up to commercialise malsingmaps and suprisingly majority support malsingmaps to be commercialized i.e copyrighted the maps & sell to commercial  interested parties. Nevertheless, the maps will still be free for contributors. Although survey was put-up by the admin, certain mappers & even the admin are actually disagreed on the commercialization. & also impending "Gray" area on how Garmin going to re-act to this issue!

Thus, it was decided that those mappers that disagreed on commercialization to pull-out from MSM & set-up new forum..i.e malfreemaps.com and in the beginning, malfreemaps will provide updates to malsingmaps too...However on the day the new forum set-up, things doesn't works as what it should be and thus...the emminent break-off of MSM & Malfreemaps... sad.gif  doh.gif

Hehe..u should knows by now who are those mappers that disagree on commercialization  biggrin.gif Well, although there's differences in opinion, thing will probably cool down in future...Well, the 2006 mapper that pull out from MSM has returned as the new mapper to EPM & NPM & probably PRK-R too...so wait & see-lah  biggrin.gif

At this point of time, if u ask me which maps is more up to date, I will say malfreemaps bcos it's updated every week & no tedious unlocked code needed. Progress on Melaka, Johor & Singapore in malfreemaps is catching up very fast too..  thumbup.gif

Im using Garmin XT 5.0 and i think its "europe garmin" cuz i saw it before loading the map at center of the screen, then now it running at m/h instead of km/h.. I not really used to m/h, is that possible for me to change to km/h format?

I am not sure bout that cause i don own an iphone.

QUOTE(aspire2oo6 @ Sep 20 2008, 04:27 PM)
TS u must also state how lousy malaysia GPS can get at times. It does calculate the fastest route to destination  but thats also end up in tol and there is no way to go around it.

2nd Even u know there is a shortcut/faster way the GPS take u a huge circle even u choose the fastest route.

3rd Nokia Build in GPS are crappy always signal unavailable due to its weak tracking ability

4rd When u really need the GPS to guide u thats when u get signal unavaliable crap.

5th Smartphone GPS it drains battery like drinking water .
*
Yeah, I will add that later tongue.gif now still doing the garmin installation thing since so many ppl wana ask bout garmin.

n82 now.. future i want to put in n95. have to buy gps10x?
*
No need, because N82 and N95 itself got built in GPS already. Using existing Nokia Map or Garmin Mobile XT , u can use the built in receiver. No need to buy garmin GPS10X. Unless if you have Garmin GPS10X, u can use their free version of Garmin Mobile XT which will only pair with their Garmin Brand Receiver.

If u plan not to buy Garmin GPS10X, u can use ORIGINAL Garmin Mobile XT (non free version - support internal GPS receiver) or use the ahem version of Garmin Mobile XT.

The choice is urs whistling.gif

Yes they use google map as map and u need to stream the map using 3G/EDGE. Unlike Symbian where we can install software and map and use the GPS in the software.

Sorry to say , Sony Ericsson GPS is useless unless you have unlimited data plan~

If it is not a Windows Mobile OS or Symbian OS, then u can only use Google Map, and I dont think external GPS works for it.

built in pda gps or gpsr sux....

small screen, thousand settings etc

get a dedicated gps better

Partially correct, Built in PDA/Smartphone GPSr sucks, however Bluetooth GPSr does not sucks, it works great and can lock the position within seconds.

Getting a GPSr using with Smartphone is cheaper solution smile.gif

Malsing Free MAP for symbian is different with those MAP for dedicated GPS~

A tough choice man, I can switch over the map in Mapsource easily, however I cant do that in Garmin Mobile XT, I have to edit it manually to switch those maps which is quite troublesome.
