foreign drafts drawn on a uk bank takes about 3-5 working days to clear, but i have it available for withdrawal as quick as 2 working days.......

i would advise bring enough cash to last a couple of weeks expenses, the rest by bank draft, open an account immediately on arrival and bank in the draft, and get a atm or debit card........

msian atm card with plus/cirrus is a useful standby for emergency.......

it is cleared......ie NOT a float......

foreign drafts drawn on a uk bank is deemed a local cheque and treated the same........

in any case, the use of cheques together with a cheque guarantee card is a peculiar practice in the uk, even paying for groceries and restaurant......so the cheque system is well developed.........

just a quick note to those in uk.....the gbp is dropping vis-a-vis myr the last few days, and students and parents may want to consider hedging the exchange........note that the 10 year trend has a low of 5, and anything below 5.5 is considered good, and that has happened less than 20% of the time........

Hey there !
I actually have a quick question...
I heard rumours that students do a twinning programe at UK is NOT allowed to graduate at UK for their final year ...
Instead, they have to come back to study their final year at MALAYSIA...

I wonder how true is it..
*
all twinning programmes i know are based on the last bit of the course being done overseas (with the exception of some medical twinning programmes)........ie you always graduate in the twinned uni overseas........

but surely, this is something to take up with the specific colleges and twinning programme coordinators......?

and stop listening to rumours........

Inti College, studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering..
glancing through their website, inti e&e programme is NOT a twinning programme.......it is a franchise from bradford u, but you get an inti degree........and you can only have credit transfer to uk/oz unis 1+2 or 2+1........

if you do credit transfer, then you cease to be an inti student, and you become a full-time student of the the receiving uni.........and will graduate from that uni.........

xray 'slides?.......it's called films.......and some xrays now come saved in digital form in a cd.........

your student visa is contingent on you passing a medical examination, which includes a chest xray, so if they give you a visa, it means you have passed your medical.......they will NOT check again at the airport.........

unless it is part of another screening process.........in which case all passengers may be randomly checked........

x-ray film. else you are going to waste ur time in queue waiting an x-ray to be done on you again in the airport.

photo ID = IC or driving license.
not really. all newcomer for more than 6 months from selected country (incl. malaysia) has to go through the health check i.e. having a doctor looking through the xray film.
*
really?........when did this rule start?.........wasn't like this before.......

appears they do NOT trust msian doctors then, who would have done the medical for the students.....somewhat ironical, as there are lots of uk trained doctors on msia, and lots of students studying medicine in uk..............might have been easier if they follow the aussie system, where the medicals are ONLY accepted in a small list of panel docs, all aussie trained.........that's how they control quality and standards.......these panel doctors need to go to the aussie high commission yearly for refresher briefing........they check by randomly double checking students, any hanky panky they pick up means the doctor will be black listed........

trains are always more expensive than bus, especially one way journeys......and you will need to go into central london, st.pancreas station to catch the intercity to nottingham.........but i find trains much more comfortable than bus..........

the best bet is the national express direct bus from lhr.......3 1/2 hrs if you don't get any jam........

sorry, typo due to work habits.......st pancras, named after the st. pancras old church and the district named after it.....

i also just found out they have moved the eurostar terminus to this station from waterloo.........and they have spent a lot to renovate it........it was rather run down during my time, but has a very attractive victorian architecture..........

i gotta make a visit back to uk soon, I think.......smile.gif

i think the british student visa process is rather complex, and more difficult than other countries msians like to go for studies, eg oz and nz.........

the biometric data collection is a pain, imaging someone having to fly all the way from say, sabah, just to have 10 finger prints done, and present the passport physically........

oz application is a breeze, you don't even need to have your pasport physically in KL.........you get electronic coe and visa........

i am not sure why they are making it so difficult.....

as for the monetary requirements, they are also more strict.....oz only want you to pay up the 1st semester's fees, no need evidence of living expenses.....

hmmm......maybe that's why there are so many 'fake' students in oz working rather than studying....... hmm.gif

and why so many msians 'tourist' disappears in uk.....

i find it very interesting, that many are going to rather unknown new unis rather than the established ones........after all, you are paying a lot of fees, and the differentials between these lowly ranked unis and the better ones are not significant........

so what's the possible reasons?.......

most important of all is to find a place that motivates  to study. Score a 1st class honour and the difference between good unis and average unis aren't as significant anymore.
*
that is not true, if you intend to work in uk..........

the work market is tight now in uk.......not easy to find jobs.........and even if you do get a job offer, you may not satisfy immigration rules for a visa........

to get good jobs, and be eligible for visa, it helps if you graduate from a top uni....and consistently, people i know from oxbridge, imperial, lse etc get good jobs in top companies.........one from cambridge with land management is snapped up by Ernst and young, even paying for her professional exams in accounting......one law graduate from lse is working for a big 4 london law firm.........

another law graduate from a lower ranked uni (queen mary, not that low down) did not get any job and have to come back.....

so it does matter......very importantly actually......where you graduate from to get past the front door........

but it probably matters not in msia, as most employers knows little about the relative qualities of the various unis in uk.....

uk student visa is always problematic.........a few years ago, a whole batch of students starting in sept missed their start because of a breakdown in their visa process.........imagine the cost incurred in changing flights, especially nowadays where the airlines charge you for changes......

you can only start applying maximum 3 months before your start date, don't know why they don't allow earlier applications.....but sometimes you will receive your cas number late, or you get an offer through clearing, which is very late.....

processing time varies, but even if all documentation is in order, it may take 4-6 weeks.........if you have made a mistake, you can wreck your entire plans.....

and while they are processing, they will keep your passport, which means you are stuck in msia, cannot go anywhere.......

uk used to be the easiest place to get a student visa........now it is the most difficult, (except usa).........

This might be out of topic but are people in UK generally racist towards the Asians?
And is there such thing as it is more difficult for Asians to get admitted into good universities or getting a scholarship?
