I doubt there's any around here, but I may be wrong..
Thanks for your time. Please do not forget the good old gaming days.. Time spent with your (most probably clone) famicoms back in the school days...
Where to buy vintage video game systems?, I'm an old school gamer..

Hi guys, Would appreciate if any of you come across any shop here in KL / Selangor that sells vintage old school consoles/handhelds of the 80s and 90s. I'm particularly looking out for old Famicoms, Megadrives, Super Famicom, Gameboy (1989 white brick), GameGear, NeoGeo AES, Jaguar, PCEngine, Sega MasterSystem, etc..
I doubt there's any around here, but I may be wrong.. Thanks for your time. Please do not forget the good old gaming days.. Time spent with your (most probably clone) famicoms back in the school days... |

No, not locally. You must get them from overseas in most cases. I do have some extras, but only SNES is pre 32bit era, the rest all starts from the 32bit era.

If you go to residential areas, some toyshops have Made in China Sega MegaDrive/Genesis clones for sale at around RM50-RM100.
But for the real stuff, you have to go to ebay. Sometimes, these classic consoles cost more than new PS2/PS3 games! |

Some are fetching for premium collector's price tag. But for the real stuff, you have to go to ebay. Sometimes, these classic consoles cost more than new PS2/PS3 games! I just won a boxed Gameboy light from Japan! Thanks for your reply. Anyways, if there are any collectors of similar interest, feel free to intro yourself here. |

i've seen most places with nes(usually famicom,but whatever) knockoffs,going by the names of "pokegame","spider game","poly station",the works.
basically they use orange cartridges and have controllers with plugs that are similar to the genesis. as for the megadrive, there's a shop in tesco at mutiara damansara(near the curve, cineleisure, etc) that sells a sega megadrive(pal, not japanese.good news for me because i lived in england and have pal games). i tried it and apparently the mega drive they gave me wasn't very good, sonic 3D had really bad music(it's good music, just sounded bad) and the controller they supplied was really iffy. times like those that make me wish i had the arcade controller back.but alas,i have made my move to the xbox 360 |

There are so many Mega Drives scattered around UK, better buy from there. If you are still in UK, there are many sources of retro games.

It's rather expensive now cause not many units survived. Many suffered from broken internal speaker and dead pixels.. QUOTE(gundamalpha @ Sep 20 2008, 10:15 AM) Wholly crap! The Sega GameGear!! I used to have one too. That was my one and only portable console i have. It died with a white screen of death.. Arghh.. I'd like to get one too.. Together with the TV Tuner. I think it's hard to find a unit here.. Hey guys, I just recalled, maybe you can find something in Cash Converters? Few years back when I wasn't into this console collecting fever, I saw a used GG and GB there.. I'm not sure if they still have it there tho..Added on September 20, 2008, 11:50 am QUOTE(gundamalpha @ Sep 20 2008, 10:07 AM) I'm not sure what to say about the PC Engine.. From what I know PC Engine had lotsa good shooters. Like R-Type or SideArms. Adventure stuffs like PC Engine Genjin (Bonk Adventures), Oh yeah, and the rare Castlevania which was released in Super CD rom format.. Not to mention also the excellent port of Street Fighter II...I had a Gameboy Light before, gold color one bought locally. But either my sister or I lost it, can't remember Gosh.. Makes me wanna go out and buy the DUO.. The Gameboy Light was only released in Japan, and I think some of our grey importers here managed to bring in a few units back then. Its now considered a rare item.. especially one that still comes with the original box and paperwork.. I just bought one on eBay (For a good price) and I'm pretty excited to get my hands on it!!! *Waits patiently for it's arrival.. Have you guys heard about the White GameGear? Which comes in a suitcase? Its a complete kit together with matching TV Tuner and Batt Charger. It's SUPER rare. And I saw it in Penang many many years ago... Least you've got some already there. I think the only retro console I have at the moment is the Atari Lynx. Pretty solid piece of shit if you ask me. 8 Bit CPU with 16 Bit GPU.. Pretty nifty.. I've got many other things I'd like to get as well.. Sigh.. Money IS the problem.. |

I noticed you mentioned Neo Geo AES, would you be interested in Neo Geo MVS instead? It's cheaper than AES in the long run for sure and that's the reason why I choose the latter.

I know that MVS carts can be now played on AES systems by way of a converter.. (I think it's called Phantom 1 or something) The MVS carts are of course less pretty looking but definitely super cheap...I've come across ppl selling the MVS 1 Slot JAMMA motherboards on eBay.. Those are just raw motherboards right? You are pretty luck to own the NeoGeo CDZ.. I heard it's damn rare.. |

wow a retro gamers thread, i've been collecting retro consoles and games for few years now, i can say the best place to source for good condition old consoles is from the internet, especially when you are looking for complete boxed set, you may find loose unit in some local game shops if you are lucky, but the chances are very slim.
to gundamalpha, may i know how much would a working mvs board cost ? and what mod is necessary to make it work with normal tv? This post has been edited by 3rotor: Sep 20 2008, 07:26 PM |

Why don't you post yours first PhatPhunk?
What you normally see on ebay are arcade boards, meaning you need a JAMMA compatible arcade cabinet to play it. I have one "consolized" to play on the TV. Thing is, such consolized MVS board are expensive to begin with, even more expensive than AES console. The reason behind is you'd need to get it powered up by itself, make your own controller ports, sound ports and of course the most important thing video ports. But in the long run, it's the game that drains your money. rarest AES game, Kizuna Encounter (US) costs you a Toyota Vios. Brand new one may cost a Toyota Camry. That's how crazy it is because there are only 7 copies of the game in the world. I initially chose a Neo Geo Top Loading, loading takes too long so I add another CDZ to my collection. But with limited games I add another consolized MVS. Due to work and so many nice games coming out on 360, I hardly have the time to play any of them nowadays. So if any of you want to buy a consolized MVS I'm willing to part mine with 11 games |

Considering the games I have plus the conditions.. I would estimate around RM3,200. That's not inclusive of all the shipping costs I've incurred, at least another RM600.

Just get a PSP and have custom firmware installed on it.
The emulators made the PSP a gaming heaven for classic gamers. |

You just don't understand the difference between buying and stealing.. I can proudly say I don't steal for my gaming habit, yet downloading ROMs are illegal activities, stealing the proprietors' rights of the games. If PSP is a solution, might as well just play them on the computer, even better emulated. Also, there's no 100% emulation, there's bound to be something missing, or else why would anyone complain about the BC of XBox and PS3 being emulated?
Eh 3rotor, how's your RGB? PhatPhunk, if you notice I have few PAL consoles. That's because I bought them while I was in Australia, but there are too many games not released outside of Japan, so have to get another one. If I'm not mistaken 3rotor also have a PAL N64 and Megadrive. Not sure what's his story. This post has been edited by gundamalpha: Sep 21 2008, 12:47 PM |

I have been playing emulated classic titles on the DS and PSP and it just doesn't feel right playing on those systems.. The nostalgic experience and feeling isn't there at all! That's why I intend to get the actual consoles. I played a few old GB titles on the DS/PSP and they feel weird. The screens just too perfect per se. I'd wanna play em in the actual hardware this time..Eh 3rotor, how's your RGB? PhatPhunk, if you notice I have few PAL consoles. And if I intend to get the GG TV Tuner, I should get the PAL version otherwise it wouldn't work, Or have we changed to digital broadcast like the States? Hmm.. I'm abit noob when it comes to this |

PhatPunk, as a gaming machine the Virtual Boy truly suck, but i just cannot resist the temptation to own one bizarre looking console, and i find myself liking it very much
I am having more than 1 MD and N64 because i came across some garage sales bundle with accessories and games that i really wanted with a fairly good price, so no harm keeping extra units in case my current working console spoil. And i saw the 64DD unit in stock at PA 1 time, the price was around 1k-1.2k if i'm not mistaken, no $ buy~ gundamalpha, i was outbited several times for that scart-component converter, i was trying my luck putting the minimum reserve price, maybe the seller don't feel like selling it at the lowest price i'm not sure, will keep trying. OMFG
those pictures make me want to cry... but what would make my heart burst is if anyone has the philips cd-i. i'd really like one.though i've never heard of it,let alone play it,it feels really nostalgic looking at the videos of games i've never heard of. |

QUOTE(gundamalpha @ Sep 20 2008, 10:15 AM) Where u get ur 3rd GG? Still available? pls tell me where!QUOTE(PhatPhunk @ Sep 20 2008, 11:43 AM) Wholly crap! I'm not sure if they still have it there tho.. I still got the TV tuner in mint condition Added on September 20, 2008, 11:50 am I see. From what I know PC Engine had lotsa good shooters. Like R-Type or SideArms. Adventure stuffs like PC Engine Genjin (Bonk Adventures), Oh yeah, and the rare Castlevania which was released in Super CD rom format.. Not to mention also the excellent port of Street Fighter II... Gosh.. |

Can't post pics of my handhelds for now.. most of them not with me right now.
GG is pretty common in eBay, not .com.my of course. I have struck a deal with a Japanese broker just today, able to get all the rarest gaming stuff directly from there. Will see how things work out, if it's good I can help fellow members here find stuff that never left the island. |

I can, but the problem is I can't do COD (I'm from KK) most likely. So you'd be spending twice on shipping (from Japan to me, then to you). If you want something less common like limited edition this or rarest that it's more worth it. Can PM me your budget and see if I can meet your requirement or not but no guarantee, hope you can understand.

Dead pixels, battery consumption (1 hour gameplay), tiny screen, sound problems (most common problem, no sound at all), weight and of course the price. The cheapest I can find (excluding shipping) is around RM400, doubt you can do much better than I do. Better think twice.

I contacted the guy and he assures that it's all a-ok. I've also messaged one of his customers asking how accurate his sales description is. The GT was once the rollsroyce of handheld, priced at a staggering US 259. I've always dream to own one despite it's pathetically small screen Added on September 29, 2008, 11:19 amCome to think of it, how come you guys only post consoles and no game? Is Sega Astro City cabinet using seimitsu buttons too ? i like the feel of the arcade buttons, more responsive compare to HRAP. My ps2 HRAP has a problem, the joystick has a square shape restriction plate instead of round or octagonal one, making me very hard to execute moves like the fire ball and shoryuken, been doing research on the net, found one website selling octagonal shape restriction plate for the Sanwa JFL series joystick, haven't check mine though, hope it can be replaced with the octagonal plate. 1000yen for a complete set of saturn virtual stick is a very very good deal wo

Yup, Astro City uses Seimitsu. I also hate square gates for sticks, but since I hardly play fighting games it's still bearable. For info on sticks modification can go to shoryuken.com IIRC. What I can say about the Saturn Virtua Stick is it's cheaper than the asking price in eBay after EMS shipping

Previous Gen: Saturn, (White) Neo Geo CDZ, Super Famicom, Micro Genius, Game Gear, Gameboy, GBA, PSX, Mega Drive, Atari 2600 (Hiding some where in my store room, will look for it....) Special mention: How come Street Fighter Zero 3 for Saturn fetch such a high price on eBay? Is it that rare??? Almost US$80 per piece. Hunting for 3DO, GameCube and DreamCast. Many years ago, when i am still a young chap, i brought my GC and DC overseas when i study university. Did not brought them back..... regret now. |

SFZ3 is indeed rare, I gave up on that copy long time ago. Would rather spend them on shmups (my main gaming interest). Any particular SS game you are looking for?
I stopped collecting NGCD games for a while now, reach more than half the library (98 games total). Only one game that I want to play still missing, Iron Brikinger. That's a real rare shit, consistently over $250 on eBay. I am looking to add the following games into my JPN Saturn collection: Street Fighter Zero 3 Vampire Savior Clockwork Night Also looking to get Street Fighter Zero 2 (Saturn) soundtrack. Normally the in-game music can be played from Saturn Game CD, but CAPCOM seems to disable that for Saturn release of SF Zero 2. I have bought a SF Zero 2 soundtrack, but it is the Arcade Q-Sound version, not the console Remix version.... I really like Sakura stage music (Saturn one).... any idea where to get? |

Hi everyone... To all you retro gaming fans out there... I would like to ask if anyone would be interested in a new retro gaming product we have developed recently... Its a retro console emulator that comes with 1000, 5000 or 10000 games (Built-inb)... Hundreds of classics are included... Games included are from the original Atari, SNES, ZX Spectrum, the first Nintendo, Sega Mega Drive, Playstation 1, All the gameboy versions (or, colour, etc), classic Arcade games, Dreamcast and many many more... I am still getting together all the details together as the product hasn't hit the market yet but if any one is interested in more details, please PM me and I will fill you in on the details...
Comes with either 1 or 2 arcade style sticks and you can even plug in any USB controllers (PS4, X-box, PC) ... Up to 4 controllers... All games perfectly emulated.... Seriously guys... If you LOVE retro gaming, this is the console to have... |

QUOTE(nuncio @ Sep 25 2017, 11:20 AM) Hi everyone... Not for me. Not interested in emulation.Comes with either 1 or 2 arcade style sticks and you can even plug in any USB controllers (PS4, X-box, PC) ... Up to 4 controllers... All games perfectly emulated.... Seriously guys... If you LOVE retro gaming, this is the console to have... |

Good to see there are other fans of retro games here in Malaysia.
I'm new here and have questions for locals. Were the SNES/Super Famicom and Genesis/Megadrive popular in Malaysia? What about older consoles, like NES/Famicom? Could you buy them new in stores here at the time? When did video games become a popular hobby in Malaysia? I'm curious to know more about the scene and history here since I don't know anything about it. Thanks! |

QUOTE(monyetrex @ Mar 4 2018, 02:59 PM) Good to see there are other fans of retro games here in Malaysia. Wow, we rarely see anyone posting on this thread anymore! Welcome to the club!I'm new here and have questions for locals. Thanks! There have always been videogames in Malaysia for as long as gaming existed. Keeping in mind that videogames are expensive hobbies, it's also no secret that most local gamers played on bootlegs. Though they are illegal, it's how most people are able to afford playing them in the first place. Keep that in mind. Back during the NES/Famicom era, the most common way to play was via Famicom clones, the most famous one being Micro Genius. It was completely chip compatible with Famicom games, and also NES games once you remove the cover. I would argue this was the most commonly owned cartridge system in Malaysia, mostly due to the ease of access. The Megadrive and Super Famicom were also popular here, but not as widely as the Famiclones. I myself never owned any of them, as my family couldn't afford them. Nonetheless, we did have game shops carrying these systems and games as well. As games were fully imported, the cost of ownership have always been high. A copy of Street Fighter II Special Championship Edition for Megadrive cost RM250 in 1993. That's like more than RM500 after inflation today. I've started becoming a bit of a collector of retro games, as I never owned them back in the day. Most of these were procured from Japan, but some of them I bought from Lowyat forumers too. Occasionally I also seek out repro carts, if I feel like playing on real hardware, but don't want to touch my originals. Emulators are fine, but I just like handling real carts in my hands! So how about yourself? Any retro stories to share? |

So how about yourself? Any retro stories to share? Yeah...I just googled Micro Genius, and that definitely looks like a Famicom knock off. I guess Nintendo didn't have an official presence in SEA at the time. So it had good compatability with official cartridges? If so, that's pretty impressive. Yeah 250 rm for Street Fighter II sounds about right. That would put it at about $60-62 USD. I definitely get what you mean about preferring the original hardware and software, but emulation can be easier. Especially when your games are in another location...or country. I don't think I have too many good stories off the top of my head. I never had a 16 bit system growing up. I actually only recently bought a SNES and Genesis within the past few years. Right now I just have access to my PC. Are the Micro Genius and other famiclones still available in Malaysia? Any good retro game stores around here? I've only seen a few game stores that sold newer stuff. I wouldn't mind picking up some stuff just to mess around with it. Since I don't know the SEA retro gaming scene, it's all new to me. |

Other local stores don't really carry retro games anymore. And if they do, they're considered as clearance items. No guarantee of the working state or condition. I know the shop IT Toys in Berjaya Times Square do have old Megadrive and Super Famicom carts, but they specifically say there's no guarantee it works, so... buyer beware. |

Generally speaking, there are many sites that carry retro gear and games, but I haven't used any of them. A Google search should bring up some results. Oh, putting in 'Famicom' into the search on Aliexpress.com does bring up controllers, parts and games. The games just might be repro carts, and not the originals though. Is there a good online site for retro games around here? Like an ebay or Amazon equivalent? Another route that you can go with, is the use of flash cartridges. Again, emulators are easily found, but I just prefer playing on real hardware. Although I do buy original cartridges, they are for my collection, and rarely played. This is where I use flash cartridges, such as Mega Everdrive and Super Everdrive. The physical cartridge is designed to fit on any system. For example, the Mega Everdrive can be used on PAL or Japanese Megadrives, as well as Genesis. Similarly, the Super Everdrive can be used on Super Famicom and SNES hardware. |

Oh, I actually meant that I myself use flash carts, not that they are popular. I don't think they are easy to find anyhow. I myself ordered them directly from the makers. If you're more interested in getting repro carts though, they are a lot easier to get. |

None that I know of. We don't have anything resembling Gamestop, where we can trade in or sell videogame systems and accessories. Some shops do buy back or allow trade in of games, but not all shops do this. That's why most of just try selling it on the Garages Sales subforum of Lowyat.net.

Okay. I have a post up there now. I just wanted to check if there was a store that bought used Xbox One controllers. I thought maybe I would have better luck elsewhere.
