At that price, everyone's interested. Can resell it straight away.

But it's not going to happen I guess.

It happens on every calls? Could be a radio ROM problem if so.

Yupe I have that problem also. Once I know there is no sound from the other party. I will just press on the on/off button once and the chatting is ok again.

been following the thread closely recently. I am considering to get a touch 3g after CNY and it will be my first ever smartphone/pda. However, I do notice quite a number of ppl here having problems with touch 3g. Would you guys recommend me to get a touch 3g?

What will be your main usage for a PDA?

thanks for your reply.

I know what I am looking for. I am just more concerned of the quality of touch 3g. Even if the features are adequate, you will still be frustrated if the pda is buggy and breakdown very often.

Any touch 3g users here kind enough to share their experience? thanks! notworthy.gif

NokiaConvert and OsakaKnight,

Well, I'll try to give a mini review of the Touch 3g. I got mine at PC Fair last month and since then I've been experimenting with lots of different apps, and have been using it heavily.

Overall build quality is very good. It's quite light and slim, unlike the traditional bulky and thick pda-phones. I especially like the rubbery and solid feel of the exterior of the phone. Close up, it's sleek, simple with gun-metal garnishing along the sides. All the buttons are made of the same metal material. Very modern.

The main speaker is loud and clear for voicecalls. The external speaker is not great but not bad either... good for the speakerphone function but bad for music playback. (My previous phone was a Walkman phone, so memang cannot compare la)

The processor @528mhz is quick and snappy, much better when compared to other pda phones. Memory is quite sufficient at 192 MB of RAM, 256 MB for ROM. Some of my friends with iPhones even said that the Touch 3G feels smoother and runs faster than their iPhones. I haven't had the chance to compare it with the Touch Pro or Touch HD though.

The GPS is good, if you update your QuickGPS often, then the GPS lock on should be fairly quick (1-3 mins for me).

Surfing is very smooth and intuitive with the bundled Opera browser. I've only tried surfing through wi-fi so far though, not sure how it's like on 3G connections. (I can only imagine it'll be just as good).

Browsing YouTube is easy and quite fun.

The Touchflo interface is very user-friendly and easy to use for the casual user, it's got almost everything you need and provides more than enough functionality. It's fun to use too. .

However, the fact that it's not customizable is quite irritating especially if you're the kind of user that likes to mod their Home or Today interfaces.

On the other hand, I've tried using SPB Mobile shell with this phone and it runs it very smoothly with no problems at all.

Battery life seems alright, I charge once every 2 days, and I consider myself a heavy user (surfing, chatting, sms, gps, apps & games everyday). Do keep in mind that the GPS uses quite a lot of power, so if you plan to use the GPS for a long trip please get a car charger.

As a multimedia player, it excels, you can either use the standard Windows Media Player or a third party one like CorePlayer to watch videos and listen to music. Music sounds pretty good through the headphones that are included. Video playback is smooth for videos that are properly encoded for pda-phones. I've even been able to watch some video files that I copied directly from my PC like Mythbusters without problems.

Windows 6.1 seems stable, I only do soft resets every 3 days or so. My Touch 3G seems a bit laggy now because of all the stupid apps/programs/games that I keep installing/uninstalling but even then it's still fast enough not to bother me. I've been wanting to do a hard reset for more than a week now, and the phone still works fine.

Now let's talk about the downsides of the Touch 3G :

- Lack of buttons/Jogdial - Yes, more buttons would make the phone uglier, but it also makes it more user-friendly. I like my phones functional. One major downside to having too few buttons is the inability to play many games (ie, Worms World Party). Also, I severely miss the windows button because now I cannot switch between tasks without them closing. (if anyone knows how I can do this, please let me know, thanks)

- Dumb T9 dictionary, I'm used to texting on normal phones, so when I write smses I use the phone keypad input. The T9 dictionary included by HTC is one dum f*k, always suggests the wrong words and never remembers the right ones. It takes me twice as long to type one sms now compared to a non-pda phone.

- Camera - 3.5 megapixels, but is quite useless as it's got no autofocus. So macro mode is not available. Quality is passable at best. But then again, if you want a good camera get a digicam... the camera included in this phone is good for casual picture snapping. If you don't expect much from it, you won't be disappointed.

- No Flash - This is one thing I really miss about my old phone, I use the flash constantly as a torchlight. Now I keep bumping into things in the dark.

- Screen - (TFT touchscreen, 65K colors) Looks great by itself, just don't compare it with an iPhone or Touch HD. Haha.

- Lack of customizability for the Touchflo Interface.

The HTC Touch 3G is a very good upper-to-middle-range pda phone, it's got almost everything that a pda-phone user needs. It's affordable and will give the iPhone a run for it's money. I'm loving my Touch 3G, it's a good looking phone that's nice and slim and performs really well. It's like a hot chick who's got brains and isn't high maintenance!

ps. I'm quite lucky as I haven't had any major problems with my phone... yet. (touch wood!) but as you can see on this thread, some users do have some hardware/software issues.
