that is called tethering. anyway, i have tried my first gen iphone with my macbook (using the USB cable, but i heard (please reconfirm this again) that it works via gigibiru as well) and it works seamlessly but i have yet to try with my XP or vista.
furthermore, are you sure that you wanna do that with the first generation iphone? maxis' edge is excruciatingly slow and you might grow a couple of grey hairs during the process. digi would probably be a more suitable alternative.
however, if you feel that switching over to another network is too much of a hassle (omit the number portability issue aside), may i suggest that you purchase an aifontrigi instead?
this is probably out of the topic, but tethering a mobile phone's unlimited data package violates many telecommunication providers globally (for example AT & T) and they may lower your network speed or suspend your internet usage indefinitely. however, since we are in malaysia, i have never heard of such an incident before.
