I assume you're talking about fingerstyle right? Well I don't know the 'correct' style, but I normally use my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers for g, B and E whereas my thumb covers E, A and D.

4th, 5th, 6th string = thumb 1st, 2nd, 3rd string = the remaining fingers |
