42pv80h,fine for me as oredi fine tune the color setting, more details at dark scene.u may compare side by side at shop before purchase and need to ask the shop assit u to set std configuration eg:color-50,brightness-50,contrst-50,shrapness-50 for all tv that wanna to compare.insert BD animation Ice Age or IronMan for those tv to compare then u will know the different from here to make yr decission.
all the best.

Yes, the best way to do tv audition is by doing default settings to all the tvs and then do a comparison. Better still do not use BD player. Use a normal dvd or even astro signal to do comparison. This way, u will identify the pros and cons more easily and have some kind of ideas what is it going to look if this is what u bring home and watch........more practical so to speak.

I think it is a must to get a power surge for ur expensive tv. And also, it helps a little in PQ improvement as the tv is supplied by stable current rather than high and low voltage. Any brand of any type should do the trick....

Look at serious hi-fi set-up, alomost all of them use the regulator to get the best result. Even they go further to use a good power cord and socket to their amp or cd players.

Yeah better to get the seller to deliver the heavy plasma to ur home. Normally they should not charge for extra transport fee coz they already earned ur margin in the tv set.

I noticed my plasma was transported upright position to my house. This should be the correct way to move it, not lay side way. Be warned.

Hey one question for u tv technicians out there.

Today, I was told by one of the audio visual specialist here that the Panny Plasma does not upscale by itself. It only upconvert the astro signal. He suggested to go via Onkyo AVR 606 to really upscale to 1080p and the picture on tv will looks much better...............? Puzzle.....ture? I dont believe him. Better trust the sifus here to convince.

did u fixed to the wall or on the tv cabinet. how much do they sell the wall bracket - 42' plasma, found some at HN so expensive. sad.gif
*
I requested to mount it on the wall. I bought the original Panny's wall bracket coz it comes with warranty drool.gif If in the event the bracket breaks and caused tv to drop, then they will compensate u the tv price. There are ahem brackets but no insurance covered so I dont even bother eventhough it costs lesser.

I think the original plus installation cost about RM300. Worth it lah as they neatly and safely put the heavy tv up. Dont even think one person can handle all these jobs. Anyway, after mounting, it looks neat and maximise space.

thks for the advice, how high is the panny from the floor? is this depends on the siiting distance or the height of the sofa.  rclxub.gif

I mount it a slight higher than our eyes level. I found it mounting too high will have strains on our neck. haha, again personal preference. The stupid thing is the salesman acts like a pro by adjusting my tv setting contrast to 75 at least and set color temp to cool. Luckily all the sifus here recommend to set lower and close to neutral or else my tv will KONG in couple of years to come.....phew.

That's nonsense from that "specialist". ALL HDTVs upscale or they won't be able to fill the whole 720p/1080p panel with a 576i SD source. It's the quality of the upscaling that sets the various TVs and manufacturers apart. An external upscaler MAY be better than the internal one in your TV, but the only way to be sure is to actually test and compare BEFORE you buy it. In many cases, a good 480p component DVD is better than a cheap 1080p HDMI DVD. Your eyes are the only opinion you should trust. smile.gif

Whatever looks good to you. Seriously. There is NO single setting that will please everyone so you should set it to your own preference. Don't believe that only properly calibrated sets are "good" sets. Those settings are frequently too dull for the average Malaysian viewer who are used to "Sony" colors.

In general, setting your set to "Cinema" mode and "Warm" setting will get you closest to the 65K standard without much tweaking. It may however be too "yellow" for some folks. That's quite close to a calibrated set with just a few button presses.
*
Thats why I say I better trust the sifu here. Maybe has the marketing skill but not the technical skill doh.gif

BTW, what do u mean by 480p component DVD to 1080p HDMI DVD? Do u mean the cable or the player itself....?

I set my Plasma tv to Standard and normal settings. I found the Cinema and Warm too yellowish and dull in its colour to my eyes. So, I still maintain this settings since day 1.

I watch my 32" LCD TV from 5' away and feel it's a little small. Sometimes I even sit at 4' away just to get a more cinematic effect. The purpose of a widescreen is to make it feel more like a cinema screen rather than a CRT TV. I'd go for a minimum 32" even in a small room. A number of our forumers put their 42" Pannys in their bedroom even. smile.gif

Once you boot up your first movie on a large screen and go WHOA at the size, you'll never return to a smaller screen. In fact, after a while, you'll always have the need to go bigger (hence the growing interest in HD projectors now).
*
Exactly what I feel too. When first bought the Panny 42 & put it in my living hall, first impression upgrade from CRT 29" is a little too big too weird. But once you get used to couple of movies, well I have to say it is getting smaller than I have imagined. Thought of 50 inch would be nice. But would eager to try my hand too on Projector. It must be a true cinematic ambiance on projector screen while your receiver handle the big explosion sound....

Off-topic a bit, but anyone notice once you get used to your home theatre set, how crap our cinemas actually are? I watched Quantum of Solace in Sunway Pyramid and couldn't help noticing how low-resolution, yellow and dull the picture is. The black levels are awful to say the least. And the sound balance between the vocals, surround and subs were totally off. And I was sitting right smack in the centre of the cinema, the sweet spot.

I'm watching my movies at home from now on. smile.gif
*
If you watch it in Kuching, I tell you even your old CRT tv play the dvd is better in PQ.... brows.gif
The only setback is the CRT screen size. Not to mention about the sound. According to a local hifi shop
which contract to install & service their equipment, says they use low grade4 subs below the porjector screen.
Their surround is the worst, even can hear some cracking sound once the actions kick-in. He also says their
amp by far worse than our receiver below RM2k, for eg Yamaha 663.
doh.gif

Probably if you watch in KLCC, you wont discover it was that bad.......especially the THX room.

HEY GUYS, Owner of Panny Plasma PV80H.

Great discovery. Those Panny Plasma HD Ready models with 5 yrs Warranty only, the Pannels are MADE IN JAPAN. No wonder Panny is able to guarantee it for 5 years. However, again not all Panny models are offering 5 yrs protection.

readjusted my settings. I agree, cinema mode gives better blacks and overall better colours.

here are my settings for both cinema and standard

Cinema

Contrast - 75
Brightness 51
Colour 53
Sharpness 50

Standard

C - 75
B - 55
C - 44
S - 50

Both settings are set to warm and colour management and overscan to off.
*
Gilthoniel,

Is the contrast setting of 75 considered too high? shocking.gif

I found the overall colours using cinema mode a bit too dull. My setting is standard

Contrast - 55
Brightness - 46
Colour - 48
Sharpness - 53

Color Temperature set to standard too.

Anyone to suggest a better calibration?? Using panny plasma.
