I got this from the hardwarezone. Tried and it works.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Once you are in the menu, this is the part which is very confusing coz not easy to navigate. Menu change is by pressing numbers on the remote. rclxub.gif

My tv only had 179hours on it.. just a bit more breaking in and then can do proper calibration rclxm9.gif

I think I should take some pics and post it here lah..

true.. but which no to press - or just keep on pressing [2] will later bring [srv-tool] ???

Hm... y so many ppl prefer the Plasma TV?
- PQ (contrast, flawless movement, natural colour, viewing angle,etc....) still a miles away from LCD

Plasma TV better than LCD TV?
- Each has a strong point. but in general, Plasma way better than LCD. (entry level Plasma is around rm3.3k now, LCD can get below1.7k ma..)

Yesterday go to HN and saw the Penny Plasma Kuro, the screen not bad, but still prefer LCD TV, wahahahha.

Just got my TH-42PV80HM yesterday. WOW it looks great even with my old DVD player (with out upscaling but with Component output). I found quite a few places now selling it at RM3.3K with 5 year manufacturer's warranty. I think this is a very good deal.

I have also managed to enter the service menu to check the running hours. it is very similar to what have been mentioned by other forumers here:

# Hold down the {VOL -} button ON THE PLASMA.
# At the same time, Press the {Status} button (the button on the left of the 0 (zero) button) on the remote control 3 times. (this must be done within 3 seconds of the {VOL-} button being pressed).
# Release both the {VOL -} button and the {Status} button and wait for about 2 seconds.
# The Service Menu will be displayed.

# Use the RED buttons to move to "SRV-TOOL" screen
and press the {OK} button to access it.

# HIGHLIGHT the box on the right side of the last option: (Navigate by using the arrow buttons on the remote)
_______________________________________
PTCT :00.00.00.00.00 HIGHLIGHT HERE

# Then press and hold the {MUTE} button on the remote for 3 seconds.

TIME = Hours and Minutes of Operation.
COUNT = Times the Plasma was Powered On.

# To exit, press & hold the {Return} button on the Remote for few seconds. The TV will power reset and goes back to the original program that you are watching.

The manual mentioned the half-life for the Plasma for this model to be 100,000 hours. This is like 30+ years for 8 hours viewing per day!

Anybody can recommend good Component cables other than the expensive Monsters? I'm currently just using some plain AV cables (the RED, WHITE & Yellow RCA) for the connections.... hehehe.
*
finally, managed to get the TIME/COUNT. Mine is 4:47 and 7 - Got the TV yesterday evening around 7pm and played around untill 11-12pm.

So, anyone that has a set which showed a diff TIME usage from what he/she used better check with Panny.
Mine is also December 08 set - cant get Jan 09 yet..

Good componet - comes with pricer price Depand on ur budget. I always use "What Hi-FI" as a reff.
An online shop in UK, "FutureShop" is doing a 50% off on many items - also do worldwide delivery..

Guys
Need your advice. Planning on getting a new LCD TV or Plasma. Budget is around RM5k to Rm6k. Sum up to these two models.

1)SHARP 46" LCD LC-4665M Rm6k++

OR

2) Panasonic TH-50PV80 Plasma TV RM5K++

I know you guys have been debating a lot on either LCD or Plasma. But I would appreciate some reviews and comparision between the two on its pros and cons.
Im more towards watching astro, maybe later going for Blueray or Playstation 3.
Would really appreciate your views guys.........

Why not the PY800 plasma Panny? The 42 inch is selling <rm6.5k now. Size depand on ur viewing distance..
For Astro - plasma still best (even with ci-put S-video)

LCD with Astro?? - Only you sit far far way!! shakehead.gif

Thanks to bros who replied..
TH50-PH80H plasma is not full HD whereas the Sharp is. We watch astro most of the time actually. But to think of it same price but 50' screen wor. No point being greedy but... Im still not sure which to get...
*
Honestly, u are once like me (w/out the extra budget). Watching Astro most of the time. My old CRT in alway on from 8 or 9 am till I got back from work, which is around 6pm. Then, when everyone is at home, u can bet it's ON till past midnite. May be if i have extra hours to spare, i watched DVD-video every alternate nite. So astro is still a factor to consider when choosing between PLASMA or LCD - if its intended to be ur MAIN display at home. Otherwise, it is all come down to "which TOYS u wanna buy"

I have a 42PV80 - only recently. So far really satisfied with the PQ (conn via ci-put s-video cable). Planning to buy a THX-certified S-Videop Monster cable from one of the forumer. Its PQ is much better when view at home, compared to what u see at retails shop. You have to remember at shop, they set diff setting for the displayed and the signal is relayed via several. best to bring ur own source (DVD/Blue Ray) and ask for demo. Try to set both sets at a level playing field - standard picture mode, NR reduced,etc..

Just watched rm8 DVD - Mummy 3 and Stealth, at 4meter distance. Very happy with the PQ shocking.gif , and my dvd doesnt have any upconversion (the pic is totally upconverted via the Plasma) surficed to say I'm amazed - still blue ray with full hd plasma is the BEST.

The only things I missed about my PV80 is that, NONE of the connector ports is gold-plated..
dunno Py800/Py850 is like that...

so, IMHO, go for plasma - you wont regret it.. thumbup.gif

pv80 in not full hd. panny full hd plasma is py800/py850. the 50pv80 is 1366x768 and the 42pv80 is 1024x768. both are 720p set.

yes, i saw both at side by side 50pv80 vs py800, via blue ray source - the pv80 is good, but py800 is better (hence the price tag). you noticed more details in py800. You can check with "imsobloodysick" shop in kajang.

AVS forum has a good user reviews - there i think the model no is px80 - u can check there.

HDMI or s-video normally come as a package. I just bought the TV - dont really like the free cable, its not that expensive if u search outside. Wanna V.good cable - need to spend more la..

Not sure about this, cnet asia reviewed that cheap HDMI and expensive HDMI makes not different if they are less than certain length (If I remember correctly, then is 5m)

Anyone who has experience in this can share? I am still using the free HDMI cable that comes with my DVD player la ...
*
HDMI/Optical/some Coaxial transmit signal in 101010101001010 (digital format), need not to worry about lost of data. Soem HDMI are now over 10 meters already. Whereas analogue cable - Component/RCA/S-video will has some lost of data if the cables are kept long - that why u are advice to keep your cables as short as possible.

Cost/price depend on the makes/material use to make the cables - low price=low cost material/ high price=better quality/insulation/grade/etc material.

If not all the quality one from distinct cable producers might as well sell like those in Giant - may be their entry level one is a bit above the standard/cheap/free cable.

As a rule of thumb - you budget on cables/connector should be around 10% of your AV setup..( spend more if you have the punch!!)

So, does the higher price cable = better PQ if all other set up remain the same?

You only mentioned that high price = better quality/insulation/grade etc material but if we do not get better PQ then what is the point?

If delivers better PQ then of course worth consider la
*
You are correct. The best way is to try each and everyone of it. But in an ideal world, that is nearly impossible - you need to be mega-rich and stupid to buy the whole brands. That's where "product reviews and user comments" come in. You can set the cable of your choice and google for its comments and reviews.

Compare it with others within the same price range. The source of the comments and reviews also need to google it wisely. I use those like what hifi/what homecinema - mostly UK base. dont really like those done by Cnet - their customer reviews so-so la.

So, u asking: "High price will Definately give me better PQ?" The simple answer is NO - you cant make a proton Sawi to run like a civic by bolting down a good spark cable, cant you?? No need to buy high-end cable if you sets are not in that range of categories. So, it best to start with a good quality AV setup first - then it will be easy to choose ur cable.
Basic thiings like gold-plated connector is definately better than those silver one. Good "insulation" and transfer will minimised data loss. High grade components delivers better PQ/SS

Then again, PQ is in the eye of the beholder. So trust ur eyes - others are only guidence,

Like i said earlier in my post - cables/connector roughly is about 10% of ur AV setup.

And uses Reviews and Comments as a guide...

Haiya, recently just brought the Sharp LCD TV.......  sad.gif

That's y ppl say technology change rapidly, better dun buy high end product....
*
A "very Good" high-end product will last/satisfied u longer. True technology change rapidly nowdays. But if u "invest" in a good top-of-the-range, be sure that it will continue to give you satisfied PQ comparing to the "new-entry-level" machine. Plus, manufacture will continue to provide the extra feature (which doesnt come in entry level product) and develops new tech base on yours.

It's very hard to stay in touch with the latest gadget/tech. Only if you are filthy rich, and can afford to change the gears week-in-week-out, then you are im-par with the game. Plus, our culture also isnt consumer oriented. Places in the developed country has shop that u can trade in your ols set and get a new one, someone later can buy this "aged" product to upgrade their setup, you can do garage sale and people still bought ur good second hand items - here in malaysia, second hand item is like garbage (no good value).. cry.gif

The Koreans may have won it for something else - connectivity, design, etc... But King Of PQ, Kuro win hands down..

hey those of you with PV80s, do you guys use the Eco mode? I find that it dims the picture down abit too much. but sometimes it does help if the movie contains alot of white and bright scenes... i usually watch with the lights turned off u see...

i calibrated my tv with the ISF monster DVD and these are the settings I came up with...

Standard mode or Eco mode, my settings are the same.

Contrast - 75
Brightness - 56
Colour - 53
Sharpness - 50
Temp - warm
Colour Management - On (i kinda prefer it with on...)

not sure if these settings are right. but would appreciate your feedback on the CATS system on our pannys. worth using?

Added on January 11, 2009, 4:51 pmoh yeah, do u guys turn overscan on or not?
*
I use the cinema mode - coz i gave a smoother gamma courve ( this i found thru AVS forum). Still less than 100 hrs yet of usage. I just moved the slider -2 to the left (for contrast, brightness, colour sharpness) and turn off colour management. the Eco mode will try to adjust the contrast via its sensor below the panel using CAT. IMHO, if you already do calibrate your display, no need to use colour management - coz it will override your level setting. Then again PQ is in the eye of the beholder - i like mine au-naturalle.. thumbup.gif

will share later with you my setting..I have AVIA disc, but no chance to do calibration yet. You can try the AVS forum. Look for px80 owner list. They has alot of user setting that u can use as a guide..Let me know which one is your favourite.. cool.gif

you call those awards ar? what hi fi mag? home cinema choice mag LOL... UK mags are not the authority in Video, they dunno nuts about Hi-def Videos source and Tvs..leave it to the americans they define HD..

besides those are 2007 ratings.. LOL now already 2009...
what's top at that timeĀ  may not even be good now..

anyway, even this 428 is called Kuro, it's a 1024x768 panel.. sorry but after having used this kind of Plasma resolution for over 3years, it's not a serious resolution for watching HD video.. kuro or not doesn't matter.
but of coz if you say this 428 is very good for astro and DVD I wouldn't argue.. but then again for 6.5k I rather have a 50 inch 80series Panasonic plasma with 1366x768 resolution.. now that would be a HD capable panel.
*
Sorry if i jump on ur nerve.
Yes, those are magazines reviews (now they have online version). You want to know why i go for magazines rather than those "institutions" that you so called "have the authority". It simply because it cater for the mass opinions through usage and reviews in one personal home/experience. It gave you the "normal user" perspective, having experience the product. It uses products that the masses like u and me would use, in a normal environment - not in some dark room with special cable and google.!!

To say that they in UK doesnt know squat about hi-def Video source is like saying YOU are a FOOL. rclxms.gif I do not know any authority that claimed themselves of being the authority/ or have the final say who's/what the expert is. If there was one, the just set a standard - so that other can follows and make inprovement on the said "specs". If you look at the way they tested the system/TV/hi-fi - the test subject is always the only variable. Hence, it gave the most accurate test result your EYES and EARS can appreciated (be my guess if you wanna get all your test guns to measure the chroma/ambient,etc.. whistling.gif )

And yes, i was sceptical when i first knew about Kuro being 1024x768. But after i demoed it and compared my personal experince with other people opinion/input (online mag being the cheapest/fastest source now), I concured that even with that hated resolution of yours, it still the BEST Flat TV outhere - not to mention the latest 9th gens. You may be have a bad experience with that kind of resolution - but hey mind sharing what model lasma u used for 3 years? Maybe i can google its past review. But to say that all those people in the mags are putting rubbish into their mags?? Well i let other be the judge of your statement.

I've nothings again the Yanks. I like some of the reviews, but the little differences e.g: voltage ( and they drive on the right side of the road) put me off a bit. Maybe my upbringing was more UK-oriented ( and I know they make/have high standard for AV, mind you), hence I like to source for UK reviews.

Coming back to the point you made - Yes, that was 2007/2008 award. Why did i point u to that.. It simply because now the price of Kuro is "affordable" and "competitive". No point talking about the best product if it cost a bomb, right?? whistling.gif
And we, malaysian has the opputunity to get it - somewhere else in this world ppl already enjoying the 9th gen Kuro and now talking about the 10th gens. You see how lucky we are.. doh.gif
And before I forget, if you bought a TOP product, no matter if it is already past 2-3 years - you'll find it better than the "latest" average. Then again we need to compare Apple v. Apple.. thumbup.gif

To suggest some one tho choose a 50pv80 over a 428xg is totally up to their choice. The mags reviews/awards are just guidences. At the end you still need to trust ur eyes and ears.

p/s: and if you wanna have a peek at the Yanks review on Kuro, be may guest...you can google it ( i'm sure a self-confess-high-tech guy like you would have no problem with google.. icon_idea.gif )

Video Testing is more objective than Audio, the fact that UK video mags still use the audiophile methodology of review (i.e. trust those golden ears or in this case golden eyes) shows that they assume videophiles are uninformed fools. if you want to read good video reviews, you should browse thro US mags like Home Theater, Home Entertainment, Sound and Vision, Widescreen review etc.
Who would review a TV professionally without doing a proper Calibration (and some of those us mags actually perform ISF calibrations on those TVs that they review).
I really dunno how you can comment so much about TVs when you don't even use HD sources or have a proper HDTV with at least 1280x720 pixels ...
saying the 1024x768 kuro is best based on DVD and Astro source.. sure I agree with you but when you move to HD, the scenario changes... even the best SD TV means little when upgrading to HD based source.
sorry I can't really take these comments seriously.. until you upgrade your equipment to be able to display HD and use HD sources like Blu-rays and even MKVs.
no point arguing about how good the sound system is when you are only using FM radio..

as for liking yanks or not, nothing to choose as far as Video is concerned..they defined the current ATSC HDTV standard and churn out reference Movies.. so it's only natural to follow the standard bearer..
*
First I thought you ask me to point out what "award" Kuro had won in the western market, hence the pasted link.
(if you are asking for a US base, well i know u can google it.)

To say that one has to own everything in order to give comment, means that one has to be filthy rich like you.
If the review hence the method of testing isnt done properly and give doubts - then i think you can summit your complaints to the editor, coz i know, their mags has many follower around the world - and these ppl should thank you for it. Of coz the yanks like to invent everything and a step ahead in the tech world. But to dismissed reviews from the other side of the atlantic is totally immature - just because all the best studio are there, for many reasons. The european also has their technical advantages over the yanks - if you know what i mean.

Yap, true I dont have a emm let me put it this way.."I really dunno how you can comment so much about TVs when you don't even use HD sources or have a proper HDTV with at least 1280x720 pixels ...". All i shared here are based on my personal eyes viewing and reading from here and there. and i certainly dont claim to be expert in any of these field. To me, numbers can be one thing or many, but, to see/hear the quality and appreciate it is another thing.

And on you last comment.. "no point arguing about how good the sound system is when you are only using FM radio.." - you hav got to be joking!! rclxm9.gif (may be we need to amend the rules in this forum ehh?? whistling.gif

And one last thing that irked me the most, is you trying to discredit all the hardwork and done by the ppl in the AV magazines tp give us the consumer a "sneak-peek" before buying a produc; just because u have a HD/Full HD display and probably use the HD/Full HD sources (like for few hours or may be week) playing ur PS3 and BR disc; make u an expert (above the ppl who did the testing day-in-day-out)

To judge ppl for not following you jumping into Full HD..."I really dunno how you can comment so much about TVs when you don't even use HD sources or have a proper HDTV with at least 1280x720 pixels ... " and..."sorry I can't really take these comments seriously.. until you upgrade your equipment to be able to display HD and use HD sources like Blu-rays..".. WOW!! that was a lot of bull coming from a self-confess-techcy-"forumer".

Well let me be the first to "elect" you as our forum expert in PQ/HD/full HD (maybe later u can apply for jobs at those AV mags,..and put it in your CV "I have Full HD display and used Full HD source to play PS3 and watch BR movies.."
Let me know when they call for an interview... rolleyes.gif

finally settled for the 42PV80HM
however, i notice there is an intermittent buzzing sound when the unit is turn OFF (not standby)
what i meant by intermittent is that comes on for a while, then go off, then come back on after a while
i doubt that it only happens after being used cause i heard it again this morning and the last time i used it is yesterday afternoon and had it switched off after that
the power socket is plugged in at the mains and the mains is left ON all the time

anyone experience this with their unit?
will be checking the usage time later today but the unit looks unused as it came properly packed

some ppl set the contrast even higher.. my settings are close to mikapoh.

contrast - 60
brightness - 48
color - 48
sharpness - 55
colour temp - warm

also, i increased the brightness for pioneer DV-410 - +3

looks ok to me, but i'm still waiting for my DVE disc to arrive for more precise calibration.
