Hahaha...everytime I found this kind of debate, it really amuse me. Vista already mature la. No longer half bake product as it use to be. Last year vista will gave your tonnes of problems but not entirely OS fault. Poor driver optimization, lack of support from 3rd party application provider and the list goes on. It happen everytime Microsoft change their major OS...but XP might doesn't suffer much because at the moment it was released, Win2000 (which the base of XP code) already released a year.
I am using vista since October last year. I hate vista at that moment but still insist to use it for the sake of knowledge and work requirement. But now, Vista is my primary OS. Vista 64 for lappy, Vista 32 for PC (only got 2 GB of rams for my PC ...huhuhu).
BSOD when gaming? Never. I always practice install stable release of driver, not beta one.
BSOD since SP1 release? yes, couple of occasion but that is perfectly normal right, when you never restart your OS for months. Only sleep and resume. I rate it as very stable.
Performance Penalty? That is last year story la kawan. All new application and drivers already optimize for Vista. Me and my blog members, we test Acer 4530 performance using 3DMark 2006...my vista score a bit higher than his XP score. Both got 4 GB of rams. So, I believe no more performance issue for Vista anymore.
If 3DMark06 could produce a little bit better result in vista, so, any games from that era should run fine in Vista. Only certain game such as CnC General, I can't play it as smooth as in XP (1 vs 7, brutal).
Direct X 10 worth or not? For gamers (if you dare to call yourself hardcore gamers), DX10 is a must. Previously I use 8600GT so, I can't really enjoy the real benefit of dx10 (especially for Games for Windows logo games). But after upgrade to 4850, oh dear. I love DX10 at every single side.
However, if your computer is single core, 2006 graphic card (mainstream) technology and less than 1 GB of RAMs, stay away from vista for gaming. But, if you have last year 3dcard or better, with 2 core (even pentium dual core will do) and at least 2 GB of rams, Vista will do wonders for your gaming experience.
++++++
The funny thing is....most of the people I found (in real life) who bash vista are the one who never use Vista long enough or never use it at all. They just to love to bash it because other said so (Echo Syndrome). All PCs and lappy in my home use Vista, and my wife never complain or bash it. In fact, when I ask her, which one you prefer, Vista of XP...she said Vista. I ask her why? Easier to be used and pretty.
Come on la XP freak, next year when Windows 7 release, it will be base on Vista code also. If vista code is so terrible, how come Microsoft will use Vista code for Windows Server 2008 (read : Vista SP1).
Take this one...if a lot of actual vista owners said that their vista work fine, good in performance, secure and stable.... how come you could say vista sux, BSOD all the time...yada yada yada. It is either your seriously ahem 'don't know' how to properly setup and maintain your PC (with Vista), never use, rarely use or simply lack of knowledge in vista.
We are not fanboy. We are the user who felt the misconception of Vista need to be corrected because Vista worth it. If XP is better than Vista, why should we use Vista? I hove both Vista and XP license...but still choose Vista over XP.
He is hardcore gamer (ultra high setting at old and new title), of course la his gaming rig 1000 times better than me...and base on that reason alone, I full heartedly recommend Vista for thread starter.
