Greetings to the community of Windows Vista users, I am planning to get an original copy of Windows Vista to upgrade my current Windows XP on my computer.

Here's the thing, I'm a hardcore gaming frenzy which plays all games old and new at the highest settings.

I was hoping to get some advice from the experience Window Vista users, how does the games old and new runs on Windows Vista, does it increase the fps with the latest features or will it spew out many problems like what i heard from other people.

Is it recommended for me to upgrade to Window Vista to play the latest games or just stick with Window XP.

I really appreciate the time reading my post.

Thank you.

old game might not be compatible wit vista. in dis case, u can't even launch the installer.

of, vista hav the benefit of dx10. game nowadays, only vista can use ultra high setting.

bt if compared XP & Vista in gaming wit same level of graphic setting, vista looses 2 xp in frame rate.

My take on gaming on Vista. Gaming on Vista. Gaming. Vista. Game. Vista.

Reasons To Game On Vista [ Fully benefit gaming on Vista with 'Games For Windows' titles]

1. DirectX 10
Got yourself a shiny new GeForce8/9 GPU ? Then its most likely to be 'Vista Certified' meaning true compatibility
and solid performance on Windows Vista. Suggestions for DirectX 10 games - Crysis, BioShock, Company of Heroes. Beware, you will need a high-end rig (nothing less) to play DirectX 10 games in their full glory.

2. Games Explorer
Choose 'Games For Windows' titles - these titles assure you full compatibility with Windows Vista. Besides, it will fully support Games Explorer - your one stop for running games on your computer, with WEI score and links to the game website. Some games even have the menu options that take you straight to the configuration options window.

3. Xbox 360 Controller
The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows is the best gamepad you can ever have for a PC. It has the best feel and quality - its really really good. And its fully compatible with Windows Vista. No need for drivers. Most 'Games For Windows' titles support this controller.

4. Widescreen Gaming
'Games For Windows' titles should (and is a criteria) to support widescreen display resolutions. So if you have a widescreen display (which you certainly will want as Vista gadgets are placed on the right hand side of the screen), rest assured that these games support widescreen resolutions. Crank tat' resolution !

5. The future of gaming...
Halo 2 for Vista remains the one and only game that supports Tray & Play. Pop the disc into the drive, and you can have the option to 'stream the game and install' - - it installs the game while you play it ! Just like gaming consoles. Also, cross platform gaming (Shadowrun & Halo 2) is possible - - you can play in multiplayer modes from Windows opponents and Xbox 360 opponents.

6. Parental Controls
If you are a parent, feel free to feel relieved. You can lock/unlock certain games with certain ratings. So, if you're a good dad, you would lock GTA San Andreas from your kids. If you're bad, just say the blood in the game is just ketchup and let them play games with senseless violence. You can almost have a time limit to using the computer.. you can try setting a time limit on your ownself - that way, gaming will no longer be addictive.

Err... hail all parents !

Reasons You May Not Want To Game On Vista

1. Old games, compatibility might be in question
Old games (like Rise of the Triad) that use Dos mode may not even install ! You can always try to use compatibility mode but it may not always work. Most old games work though, but some still don't and won't. You will have to use DosBox or similar software to play your old games. Some games (circa 2000) that ran on Windows 98 / XP may not work in Vista. Usually its always the case of using compatibility mode, but that may not always work.

2. DirectX 10 / Performance ?
I question the use of DirectX 10 in games... Vista does it job, but there is just a handful of games that support DirectX 10. BioShock with/without DirectX 10 - almost no difference at all. Crysis, there is a 'tweak' that allows DirectX 10-like visuals although still using DirectX 9 mode (game creator Cevat Yerli says 'this isn't the real DirectX 10 graphics.... ???? ).

Also, not to mention the demanding resources when using DirectX 10 unless you have a high-end gaming rig. Expect games to be 'a little slower' in Vista compared to XP.

3. Games For Windows ?
Not all game titles are under the banner of Games For Windows. This raises the question - - why not ? Why won't game developers just get to this standard. Well, game developers Valve claim they have their own system even though it fully complies with all Games For Windows standards (widescreen resolution, Xbox 360 controller support). The Need For Speed franchise (and other EA titles too) has doged GFW altogether.... for reasons unknown.

As for me....
When Crysis was released, I wanted to shoot my computer. There goes my near 5-digit priced gaming system. It could barely make Crysis run at High. Forget Very High. And (for me), forget DirectX 10. I abandoned PC gaming. Windows Vista was part of the reason too - - DirectX 10 was all the reasons for me to keep gaming on PC, but this was the one thing that just didn't make me a happy gamer anymore. Its the future of graphics technology, right, but let's just say I'd prefer gaming consoles. So yes, I am a uber happy Xbox 360 gamer and I use Windows Vista on 4 machines at homes to play MSN games.

That's right. MSN games. Geometry Wars is my favorite.

Game on!

Choose your destiny of gaming...

ok, TS, you go for Vista, you regret forever. Vista is the worst OS Microsoft has ever released to date after Windows ME.

Don't belive me? Just go youtube and type in 'Vista' then you can see everyone ranting about Vista and BSOD while gamming.

I tolerated with Vista for less than 1 month. I'm actually very patient because I bought original copy but just couldn't take anymore crap.

what's the point of Vista when you can run your games at least 40% faster on XP or other platforms. So you spend 40% more on your hardware upgrades + the CD package just for the DX10??? Justifiable? Hell no to me.

I believed, and still do, that 90% of people who diss Vista have never used it. And if they did, they already have hada fixed opinion about it after reading the varius reviews and comments.

But then again, i got the Win95 edition of Red Alert to run on MY Home Premium so i don't see why it's the worst. I'd say that XP was worse than Vista even when it was launched.

I used to think negatively about VISTA. Now, few days back, I've purchased the original VISTA RETAIL ULTIMATE PACK.

IT'S TIME TO MOVE TO 64bit!!! Thing's changes and there's bound to be improvements made to VISTA.

XP is still XP and it's a good OS but sooner or later, everyone will shift to VISTA or maybe Windows 7.

I thank all you experienced Windows Vista users for taking your time to read my thread.

After hearing your inputs, i shall heed your advice and stay away from Windows Vista, at least until the performance for Vista improves.

Dude... there's no such thing as performace for Vista improves. It was already better than XP when released.

If i can play Red Alert 1(Win95 version) on it, i don't see why other games wouldn't work. And besides, the performance impact is so minimal you're not going to feel it unless you're going to be so crazy over the extra 5-6fps.

Yeah Vista ain't that bad...Used to be a Vista basher tongue.gif ...but I've seen performance and benchmarks improve a lot...Go Vista if you've got the RAM and a good GC for gaming(most new GC's are quite okay).

BTW off topic but is Vista SP1 being sold at retail yet? Or do we still have to update after buying it?

a LGA 775 P4 or equivalent is enough to run Vista
1GB RAM is ok too
a GeForce 6200 or Radeon X300 is all u need

heck, i dun think TS has such an "outdated" rig if he's an extreme gamer...

40% faster on XP??? stop dreaming dude, it was at most 20%, and that's during initially release of Vista... and the main reason to that was that drivers were not optimized well for Vista at that time...

in that case, u'll be stuck in XP forever, cuz (as of now at least), DX10.1 and 11 will not be available on XP too, and we are starting to see some DX10.1 games pretty soon...

ya, Vista was bad, i dun deny it... but ve u tried Vista SP1???

reminds me of the time when ppl said the same thing for XP...

(dun go XP!!! u need a new rig for XP!!! 98 runs games so much better than XP!!! blah blah blah...)

try replacing XP with Vista and 98 with XP...

ok, all you Vista owners out there... have you ever got a BSOD when you halfway into the game and never saved your game

I get that like so freaking often I totally gave up on Vista.

By the way, my specs were like so good back then...

For me, I'd rather use Ubuntu if it's not for gaming but I like gaming too so I'm sticking with XP for now.

The only advantage Vista has over XP for gaming is DX10 and that's it. The rest are all burdens you may carry

BSOD means driver got problem (most likely)...

i can tell u that i never BSOD while playing games on Vista x64... at most game hang, minimized to windows, driver restart, then go back to games, continue to play... but that's when i was using beta driver...
