@emotion, i started doing gunplas again about four months ago so i do suppose i know where/what you're feeling right now.
a) If you have the budget of say around RM200 per month then go for handpainting at the very least. Some decent brushes, retarding thinner and colours do not cost that much. Some of the SD guys don't prime their kits nor do they topcoat. If you do want to do these additional steps then that'll set you back around RM35 per can. Cans do finish quite fast, expecially the surfacer.
b) If you have some spare cash and a little bit more to go around every month, go get an AB. If you are serious about the hobby that is. AB-ing is better than Sex! Well, nearly

, either that or I'm not doing the sex bit right on account of old age

Airbrusing will cost a little bit more as priming and topcoating is pretty much a must. You will end up getting decals etc And since you are already AB-ing you'll probably want to do some sanding and cementing too (i'm terribly noobish at this part

) - additional costs that can really add up. Despite it taking longer to complete individual kits, you will continue buying for sure, so you will end up with a stockpile of unassembled gunpla, unless if you have godly self control!
c) If you're on a budget or just want to get a feel of the hobby before making further investments, go get gundam markers. To be honest, although good beginner tools, they are not completely satisfying and can be a pain to use... not that cheap either as you need to get quite a fair few to get a decent selection of colours. I would recommend hand painting instead. Honest.
Hope this helps.
