I can only think of one game that is on both the 360 and the PS3 but the latter console requires installation - DMC4

Could it be that the Blueray drive reads slower than the DVD drives? Is there anything lacking about the blueray drive when it comes to access times which i think is imperative in loading video games data?

p/s I'd imagine that an installed game would load faster than one that is read off the disc, but we aint comparing HDD speeds now.

yes, the PS3's blu ray transfer rate is slow. that's why most games require installation.

most of ps3's games uses uncompressed textures, thus the size is too big to stream it off the disc. solution? install it to the HDD.

Ps3's 2x blu-ray drive read at a constant 9 MB/s no matter if it is dual layer or single layer.

Normal DVD 12x DVD-rom drive It read at fluxuating rates. For single layer it reads 9.25MB/s through 15.85MB/s averaging around 10.25MB/s. In Double layer it reads 4.36MB/s through 10.57MB/s averaging around 7.93MB/s

The ps3's constant read speed for SL and DL is faster then the average of normal DVD DL read speed.

who cares, but do take note that not all games need installation, and sides, it increases the lifespan of the Blu ray drive, you dont need to constantly read it to play, so less damage on the lense.

unlike the Xbox, constant reading also results in heat producing from the drive itself and combine with bad air circulation it causes the console to overheat.

IMHO, this thread is useless, since there are instructions in the game that explain the reason for installation in PS3. Dunno why others like to flame these two consoles, i think these flamers dont even own any of these consoles to really feel or experience what these console have to offer hence jelousy kicks in and they started to flame console owners.

I myself owned a Ps3 and my younger brother owned a Xbox 360, played both, and frankly these two consoles have pros and cons, but it is more serious towards Xbox(3ROD SH**).

anyway, stop jelousy, just play the game...

most the the early batch of PS3 game did not require any installation. But the best example is Burnout Paradise, now not only you dont need to install the game, you can buy the game directly from PSN store with cheaper price and load from hard disk directly

after all, most of us have big ass hdd to begin with, cheap, easy to find and we can copy almost any media available, mp3s, avis, mp4, pictures you name it.

to save the ps3 lens. you know how playstations are with their lenses. goes back from the ps1 days. besides, it only takes a moment for the installs.

i ran away from PC primarily because of the upgrades,but also because of the installation.

now im smack in the middle of it yet again.

im used to loading,so i could care less (hell,the so called installation doesnt remove loading..just reduces it)

those of us with stock HDDs are f*cked.

and changing sounds nice,but not all of us have the spare cash

i dont really like installation. sounds like PC. it waste 10 minutes of my life...

OK we can call it Sony PC3 now. TO make it stable for both side, we can call xbox360 = XROD360.

at least with a console u can safely say that u can play it after installation...but on the pc...after long minutes of installation, then only u realize u can only play with the lowest setting, worse case...can't even play it.

actually a failed lens ps3 can still be turned on, play PSN games and MP3, Avis, browse the new, linux bla bla.

Only disc based media is affected. Once replaced, its as good as new. No fear of playing it again

2. Before I answer that..., let me tell you that you are asking to the wrong group of people...

3. We're not the developer of the said game.....

4. Almost all the replies will be flame wars and comparing apple to oranges kinda replies....

5. As a developer...they will try to give the best experience within the constraint of the developer. this means the time the dev have to make the game, the expertise, the cost and etc; as well as the limitations of the console itself....So what if the dev is not good enough to find other ways than mandatory install?, so what if the dev do not wan't to spend more time/money to find a way? So what if the PS3 is so bad that it cannot play games if there's no mandatory install?

6. Will any answer from the above questions leads you to not buying the game? or may leads you to not buying PS3 instead?

7. It really doesn't benefit us at all to discuss this as nothing willl come out of it since we're not developer...

8. To me, it's much better to discuss how much mandatory installation actually affect as us normal gamers...

9. Does it really 'potong' our 'stim' when playing MGS4?

10. Does it really 'kill our enthusiasm' when booting DMC4 for the first time to play the game when greeted by a screen to wait for 20 mins?

11. At the end of the day, after we finish the game...does it really affect the overall feeling of how great the game is?

12. These are better discussion points....coz...if it really affect out satisfaction...then we should channel it to the dev so they do something about it...
