Mabul/Sipadan/Kapalai can have very generous amounts of current, not sure if I would say that it is better for beginner...
Superb vis is no doubt though thumbup.gif
*
I took my open water at Mabul, maybe im lucky coz in all 4 dives, the current was considered weak during that time... maybe my dive instructor brought us at suitable place for beginner... but i think no problem for beginner, at least he can experience and learn to deal with mild current...

I read current at Nusa Penida is strong and not suitable for beginner...

Guys, I went to perhentian last time and rented a camera to take pics during my dive and found it fun. Now I have a G12 and wondering whether to buy my own underwater housing or just keep on renting? And if i have to buy, is the Canon underwater housing ok? Some dont recommend it coz they say it tends to crack easily and recommends the ikelite.. But i think the ikelite is too expensive... Any recommendations or rentals from kl where i can just rent and bring 1 camera during the whole trip and not let anyone else burn the pics for me..?
*
I also new to underwater photography, I use Canon S100 with Ikelite housing instead Canon because if you want to add macro-lens or wide-angel lens you just screw the lenses to the thread.. if you use canon housing you need to buy adapter first in order to attached those lenses.

Since you already have a good camera, I think just buy the housing...

Hmm.. I am worried that the g12 will flood and it only takes one flood to ruin it entirely and I love that camera. And yeah a lot of people i managed to talk to are not letting anyone touch their sets too.
Any idea what the price is for ikelite? I got about 1.8k..
*
As munkeyflo said, scubasymphony have a good reputation selling UW Photography equipment... never bought from them.. but they quite popular. I bought my Canon S100 at Rainbowrunner located at Jalan Ampang.. I got mine RM960 while other price is RM1100.

Now I'm aiming for strobe pulak.. haha... but quite expensive around RM1.1k above...

I saw your G12 Ikelite at Symphony site is RM2650.. where did you get that RM1.8k.. a good deal I guess...

Ok normally for the new housing on the very first dive, we are advised not to bring the camera... just bring down the housing to check if there is any defect that will flood your housing.. and if everything fine on the 1st dive, then only, it is safe to slot in your camera in the housing and bring it down.

I brought my new housing for snorkeling.. and nothing happen during snorkeling and I brought down on the very 1st dive because of super excited. haha.. luckily everything turn well.

Just give o-ring extra-care & dont drop the case it will crack.. everything will be fine.

Take the train. I find taking train easier. Of course if you're gonna buy big stuff then no choice have to drive. Most of the time I get fed up with the parking and just park at valet parking at the hotel opposite. Rm10 for first few hours like that.
*
you can park outside the PWTC.. near naaga curry house if im not mistaken.. RM3.80 per entry.

Tested my Mares Volo Race fins at Perhentian. Even though there was a mild current, I felt less effort required and my air consumption is also getting better..

guys , im interested to do diving course this november?
i want to do open water diving course , but i heard there will be monsoon in perhentian , redang and tioman .
i m planning to do the course in sabah.
do any of you have go through the course for open water diving course at pulau gaya?
*
Taking open water course is one of the best decision I ever made. Yup, will be monsoon in east coast.
As far as I'm concern, there is only 1 resort operating in Pulau Gaya which is 5-star resort must be expensive for accommodation, unless your dive center will be based at KK.. why dont you do it in Mabul..? but air ticket to Tawau usually expensive... other options are island in southern Thai or island in Indonesia such as Pulau Weh, Acheh.

do u have any information centre based in kk? not planning to stay at pulau gaya .how much will be the total cost , i already go through most of the web , is it true cost will be around 1340 if at kk ?
tried inquiry for mabul , the flight tix almost double than kk , thats why i prefer kk now .
so what's the total budget require if in thai and indonesia?
prefer to be below 2k including accomodation , flight , and course
*
RM1340 is reasonable price, course alone is around RM900, the rest are accom, meals, airport/boat transfer.. yup, the air tix to Tawau is expensive unless you got promo price.

RM2000 all in with flight is possible.
Let say, air ticket is RM300.
My friends took thier open water course in Pulau Weh, Acheh.. the course + accom (homestay/dorm) + return land transfer (airport-jetty-dive center) = RM1180.
Ferry return = RM25
Not include meals.. meals you can budget for RM30 max perday.. x 5 days = RM150
so total around RM1655 only.
they are NAUI certified not PADI** but if PADI should be the same price too..

open water course is best decision you ever made? i always wanted to try diving but no guts....i tried scuba diving once at sipadan few years back...i cant swim..i went for scuba diving coz all my frens going and i just force myself to go..i cant even snorkel..do you think im able to go for open water course?
*
yup.. haha... this 25th July, exactly 1 year with 20 dives. You said that you always wanted to try diving... for me it is strong/good enough.. don't take course if you're just want to follow friends, or boyfriend..

Swimming is a skill, everyone can master the skill.. if you still cant practice swim alone, I suggest to take swimming class.. after that you we slowly get more comfortable with water.

before I take my diving course, I am afraid to do snorkeling without life jacket (even-though I can swim sikit2).. after taking open water course my water confident build up..

as per the instructor from my scuba diving, she mentioned that dont need to know how to swim in order to dive..lol..i can swim a little..only in the pool...
im ok to be in the water (swimming pool) .. if in the middle of the sea, im only ok if im with life jacket coz i can only swim in the pool (know a bit only)....last time during my scuba diving, i enjoy it so much eventhough at first i dont want to go for it...thats why im thinking to take the course now (coz i enjoyed it last time)...at the same time im just afraid to go alone, wanna find kaki to go along...
wow..in 1 year 20 dives, thats more than 1 dive per month...no no im taking the course just becoz i wanna learn...not becoz of anyone...in fact none of my friendsss wanna teman me for the course...now finding other gang of frens to teman coz i dont want to go alone tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

i can swim but very limited..only able to swim in the pool...beginner swimmer..so u think is better to go for swimming class first?

now im only ok to be in the sea (for snorkelling) with life jacket...so now u can swim like a fish in the sea even when snorkelling?

where do u take ur course?
*
from what you said here.. you are already know how to swim, just no confident swimming in the sea. No big deal then, you will learn naturally..

I think you're ready to take the course.

They will not ask you to swim 200m in the big waves... apply the same techniques, take it easy & don't rush. I am sure you're able to float yourself without life jacket right..?

No need swimming class. Just need more practice to build up your water confident. I am also beginner swimmer, I don't have a lot of stamina..

Don't afraid to go alone, I also took my OWC alone too (bcoz, none of my friends interested in diving)@ Mabul Island... Dont worry you will find friend there.. ask your instructor to combine you with another students.. so you can make new friends too...

haha.. I dont go every month... usually one dive trip in every 3-4 month.. I did minimum 2 dives per trip.. and most I did 6 dives per trip..

Can do over 20 dives in a 5D4N trip to Mabul/Sipadan with unlimited house reef dives. laugh.gif
*
lol.. 3 dives per day already tiring enough for me... haaha... yup the water bungalow house reef is nice too..

QUOTE(cynnz @ Jul 23 2012, 12:28 AM)
yea i think to know how to swim in the sea before taking OWC will be better..or else i might freak out in the water..

when u took ur OWC last time, u r already a good swimmer?
where do u plan to go this november? u can swim well? biggrin.gif
hmmm i know how to swim only in the swimming pool whereby i can step the pool ground ... thats why im not afraid..i have not been to any swimming pool which is deeper than my height...the pool at my condo is only 1.4m deep...  doh.gif

in the sea, i have never tried floating without a life jacket...with a life jacket also i feel scared to go too far / deep...LOL... chicken..hahaha

water confident in terms of sea water? coz i find that sea water is so much harder to swim compare to pool...right...and yea i dont have stamina too..cant even swim a full lap in the pool...haha...

u went alone last time? Mabul island must be a really nice place tongue.gif hmmm..u did both your theory and water practise there? or theory in kl then only go there?
*
if you can swim, you can swim at any depth... it just a matter how you telling your mind. you can try at deeper pool at public pool..

try to float at your 1.4m pool too.. if you can float, you can float at any depth too.. haha..

yup, I went alone to Mabul and yes I did both theory & practical on the island... our 1st dive is already 5m deep at sea.. no pool.. haha.. I got panic few times. haaha

QUOTE(cynnz @ Jul 23 2012, 12:46 AM)
ooh ic..my discover scuba diving i did in sipadan...but that time still super chicken (even now also)...but anyway i enjoy it biggrin.gif  oh u r seaman..hehe i always envy u guys who can swim really good in the sea biggrin.gif
*
cynnz.. if you did your discovery scuba in Sipadan.. I am sure you stay at Mabul right..? because no resort operated in Sipadan.. unless long2 time ago before the gov ask resort operator to evacuate the island and relocate to Mabul. Yup, its a nice island.

in ur opinion, do u think its better to do theory here first, then go there for practical..or do both there?
*
monkeyflo explained it all.. biggrin.gif

(base on my experience) When I took my OWC in Mabul both theory & practical on the island I don't really find it stressful and it's not too hard. I just read the important note, understand it, why it happen and answer the quick quiz (self assessment) in every chapter . If I don't understand then I will read in detail.

(Practical) My problem is my instructor bring us down at 3-5m at first dive... not really a confined water, he should bring us at 1.5m first... I was panic but i tried to control it.. mask clearing skill is a nightmare for me... I panic and stupidly breath through nose.. haha.. so I surfaced and relax and go down again. My mask leaking also I scared. Coz I don't know that mask leaking is normal in diving...

so please expect your mask will leak and your will ear hurt (if you don't equalize often).. its normal in diving.

@zizdnyll: I will choose Mabul instead of KK. My advise stay on the island.
