haa finally i'll be going with 3 more person (4 include me), hope it wont be too crowded sad.gif  My gf is onboard! (last minutes), she suddenly very interested to get OWD cert. She realised how much she would missed out if she cant follow me to dive (mayb she think i would leave her for diving trips, hoho).

BTW, i'll be taking the course from B&J dive centre at tioman island this coming May. Quite cheap i think (rm1050 per pax for full package 4D3N).

Hopefully i'll pass all the test to become OWD!  biggrin.gif
*
All the best! Most importantly, have fun! laugh.gif

QUOTE(Moiteser @ Apr 26 2011, 06:32 PM)
i want to take PADI open water course in this mid year. Any recommendation on where the best place to take the course, prefer in Malaysia or nearby country such as Bali or Phuket....
*
There are many dive centers in the city and on island. I'm guessing you wanna do the whole course on the island? If that's the case, then most of the popular dive islands in malaysia have them. Redang, Perhentian, Tioman, are cheaper choices. While Mabul might be slightly more expensive. From what I've gathered, west Malaysia is still the cheapest place to dive. But you'll get VIP treatment if you're diving in Bali or Thailand. smile.gif

QUOTE(zaff1984 @ Apr 26 2011, 07:51 PM)
Im wearing glass, and I will go to snorkeling this Thursday. I know there's a mask called Powered Mask for people who wear glass.

Where can I buy the Power Mask... is it expensive?
*
You can get those mask with power at any dive shops.
I got mine when I first started diving, about 5 years ago, at a dive shop in Sunway Mentari for about RM300.

It depends on how high your power is and how common it is. If the dive shop have ready stock then you can get it on the spot. If not, they will have to order and wait for it to come.

However, I still prefer to wear contacts. smile.gif
Not really need to clean them right after. But it's better and it's recommended la.
Most of the time I'll just get dailies and wear it for one whole day doing 3 or 4 dives. I also remember to always have eye drops with me and my specs and prescription mask just in case I've having trouble with my contacts.

QUOTE(miuk @ Apr 27 2011, 11:06 PM)
I use daily lenses so no issues with keeping them. Wear in the morning by evening throw away. No issues even if I flood my whole mask, still can blink underwater.
*
Wow. Really? I thought we can't open our eyes underwater when we are wearing contacts.
And it really hurts when sea water gets in the eye with contacts on. What dailies do you use?

sea water is considered sterile... actually you can open your eyes underwater with contact lens. there's nothing wrong... i remember during my mask recovery lesson, the instructor just snatched my mask and left me with no mask for couple of mins. it stink for a couple of seconds then it's back to normal

some instructors will tell you not to wear anything because when you are underwater, objects tend to be 33% bigger in size
*
I see. I'll try it next time. tongue.gif
I didn't dare to open eyes when wearing contacts cause my instructor told me before not to.
Without contacts on, I can't see anything when I open my eyes. Everything is just very blur.

I'm currently using B&L SoftLens which are with astig corrections, not much choices for dailies with astig. Previously used FreshKon. Worst is Ciba Vision, that one someone else used, can really float away from eye if exposed to water.
*
I see. Anyone tried with Acuvue before?
Have never used Ciba ones. tongue.gif That's what I heard about contacts underwater, it will drop off from the eyes if we open our eyes.

QUOTE(lck*G9 @ Apr 29 2011, 12:39 PM)
actually i tried once without contacts too and it was really not fun at all... imagine you need to walk from dc to boat, get onto the boat clumsily, slip on your fins, back roll, look for your buddy on surface, decent making sure everyone is there... damn hard to see... and you are right... cant see a thing at all and its worst when the visibility is poor.

i hate poor visibilities especially when theres trigger fish
*
Trigger fish - very scary. My sister got attacked by it before. It bit her ankle, thru her booties and wetsuit. Then she took her fin and whack that fella kao kao. sweat.gif

I used to dive without contacts, so I only had clear vision when I'm diving cause got power mask on. Bringing specs along can be quite annoying cause scare it will break la, dunno where to put la, break edi then even worst, cannot see for the whole trip. =.= So now I stick to wearing contacts. Can't wait to try opening my eyes with contacts underwater. Swimming pool can ar?

That's because you went too near their nest. They attack when they are nesting. biggrin.gif
*
Probably she didn't notice their nesting area that time. According to her, they were already on the surface waiting for the boat to arrive after the dive.

Thank God I haven't encounter any trigger fish experience. tongue.gif

I've recently bought the coupon from Groups More, Rm990 for PADI certification, and 3D 2N at Pulau Perhentian. Is that a good deal? Was reading through the thread, the PADI manual is compulsory to buy? I'm going under Flora Bay. Hope they're good.

Any need for my own equipment like own mask and stuff like that? or the rental's good enough?
*
To learn, you don't have to get your own equipment first.
Scuba equipment isn't a cheap, you have to find out what type you like first before you go ahead and buy them. Different types have their own pro and cons.

i'm looking for pulau payar ~~ any recommendation?
the course provide by east marine is too expensive~
*
East Marine is reputable 5 star dive center if not mistaken, they cater more to foreigners. It is more on the high priced side.

Diving at Langkawi is expensive, because of the boat ride to the island, I can't remember what island it is. tongue.gif

QUOTE(etigge @ May 10 2011, 04:16 PM)
Langkawi's most frequent dive site is Pulau Payar which is the only marine park on the western side of peninsular Malaysia. There are the house reef, grouper farm, coral garden, shark alley on Pulau Payar itself. Then there's Pulau Lembu and Pulau Kaca which is a nice dive site as this is where our marine department sinks those confiscated fisherman boats and the corals are nicer here at 25 to 40 feet. Last time off course, now I don't really know. laugh.gif

Unknown to most the marine park also includes Pulau Segantang which is quite a distance due west of Pulau Payar. Unless you have the numbers, most dive operators don't take you there. Visibility is better here and marine life is abundant here. This is also where I have seen the barracuda wall and also at one time thousands of sea snappers (jenahaks and siakap merah). At the back of this island is where Perikanan anchors those clay tubes for lobster breeding.  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Ah I see. Also, seldom see local dive centers organize trips to Langkawi for diving. A bit hard to get a bigger group then I guess. sad.gif

Haven't dived in Langkawi before so I dunno. tongue.gif
Would be nice to dive in less known areas...

Thanks for the info. I can swim with aids; fins + lifejacket tongue.gif can float..

So i can straight take owd? no need scuba discovery?
*
You don't have to do discovery before you take OWD. It's not a requirement nor do I see any need for it. It's more for those who don't really know what diving is all about and wanna try it out, just like a trial dive smile.gif

I did two discovery dives before I took my OWD. First one was just for fun. Second was with my bf cause he hasn't tried it before. Then a year after that we took up OWD.

You don't really need to be a professional swimmer to learn diving. As long as you can swim, in your own way, and also keep yourself afloat. That's good enough.

^In a similar boat, except I'm planning to do some proper scuba diving in Mabul in a month and a half.

What's the cheapest way to get the OWD cert? biggrin.gif I'm hoping its possible to do the training on weekends or something, in a place near Subang Jaya.
*
My instructor is based in Sunway Mentari. He conducts his lessons in a few areas. He's actually quite well known as well. PM me if you're interested. smile.gif

QUOTE(lck*G9 @ May 12 2011, 12:35 PM)
diving is consider an extreme sports man.. don't go risk your live with the "cheapest" OWD course. you should always have safety first priority always.

IMO don't waste your money to go mabul because you won't enjoy in your early few dives. learn your buoyancy and learn how to do deep dives before going to mabul.
*
I agree completely.
From my yum cha session with my dive instructor and two of my friends who wanna learn diving today. It seems that those crash course at islands are cheaper.
And I would strongly recommend beginners to not take island crash course. I had to experience it the hard way.

QUOTE(30katz @ May 12 2011, 05:06 PM)
Oh .. i like Sipadan ,, the best dive site in malaysia

Shd plan a trip to visit there ...
Sipadan .. oh.. fantastic place
*
Although I admit Sipadan is really awesome but I don't really like seeing a turtle at every angel I turn. Prefer searching for small stuff. tongue.gif
Still prefer Mabul. And other ship wreck dive sites. Wanna try diving at layang layang, but it's so expensive sad.gif

Getting an underwater camera before you're OWD license. That's a first for me! biggrin.gif

Till now I don't even dare to whip out my underwater camera. Still trying to perfect my buoyancy. smile.gif

Nice story there etigge.
Thanks for sharing.

True, like what the others said. It's not really a dangerous sport, its the people themselves who made it dangerous. I've been told snorkeling is more dangerous than diving, basically because we learn the correct ways of diving but we have never go thru a course for snorkeling. smile.gif

QUOTE(moomoosan @ May 23 2011, 11:01 PM)
hello everyone! dive newbie here. me and my partner just got our owd license 2 months ago and we have logged a total of 8 dives ever since.
will be back in malaysia for our break soon and i was just wondering if anybody could shed some light regarding the pricing of diving gears in malaysia. right now what we have are just wetsuits (have to get them cos i always get rashes/irritations from worn out rental suits.. plus they were on sale anyway).
so yeah, just wanted to know if gears in malaysia are cheaper compared to here, australia. i'm not really sure about the malaysia market but dive shops here often carry brands like aqualung, mares, oceanic, cressi, probe and so forth.. too many to be named.
do feel free do blast away with suggestions and opinions. i'm here to learn. thanks!
*
For wetsuits, Hong Kong is much cheaper. Especially custom made. smile.gif
Stuff back home in Malaysia can be quite expensive. Go for MIDE in July to get good deals.

Fins will cost around RM300+ or so for a decent good pair. There are cheaper ones as well.
Mask varies, depends on brand. Cheap good ones can get around RM70-100.
BCD, most expensive. Depends on what type you want and what brand.

Brands mainly Bare, Scubapro, IST (taiwan brand I think) and quite a few more.

Australia will have more choices and I would definitely buy there if given the opportunity. But if you're looking for cheaper alternatives (not so brand conscious) then maybe you can come back and buy here. Try checking http://www.scubatexpro.com/index.php (this shop always packed with people during MIDE. laugh.gif)

RM350 for a wetsuit is very very very worth it!
Here the cheapest wetsuit you can get, the cheapest Bare one, after discount is about RM350 also. That was about 3-4 years ago.

I think the BCDs are very cheap as well.
I bought mine in US actually. The BCDs here are at least RM1k and above.

Hi guys,
Ive done a discovery and a few illegal dives in the past but im really interested in taking up a full course. The problem is... im short sighted, does any body know where to buy/customize prescription dive mask in KL? Contacts is outta question.
*
There are many places that have that. Just walk into any dive shops in the city and they'll be glad to help you. I'm pretty sure almost all the dive shops has it now. Even those shops that sell swimming stuff also sell prescription snorkel mask.

QUOTE(blackwhitechipsKL @ May 25 2011, 06:17 PM)
If you dive in east coast only, probably no need a dive comp, but if do open sea dives like sipadan or Bali, then dive comp becomes more important as it tracks your no decomp level, especially wall dives. Basically, if you do your calculation properly, you can dive without one, but have to monitor your depth and make sure you don't yo yo while diving
*
Up till now, I've not gotten myself a dive comp. My buddy has one. So I just rely on his.
I would get one in the future but I don't see it as a necessity for me now yet.

I wouldn't recommend it for beginners who just want to start diving though. It's not something that's easy to use and understand. Have to familiarize with all the many functions and even the basics of diving, decomp and all that.

munkeyflo, that's what i always did. all the buggers i used to dive with has a suunto, so when do safety stop, all the dive comp ringing. that's why since i start diving seriously again in 2007, (i started 2003) i didnt get myself a dive comp. now that the old group kinda disband, i told myself, just get a cheap one lah, since i'm no tech diver, and also i'm not a watch person.
*
Haha. My buddy is my bf so he'll never let go of me and make sure I'm next to him almost every minute. tongue.gif So I pretty much rely on him and his dive comp completely.
I do sometimes borrow my sister's dive comp to go as well if she's not using it. Yea just get one that has the functions you are looking for and is practical, doesn't need to have everything which will be super expensive.

Not that easy to spot molar molar. Better check when is the season first before booking your trip. Also, Bali is not an easy place to dive. The current can be quite strong, water temperature might be cold as well compared to our local divesites.

Snorkelling ar. Go sipadan lor.

haha i meant dive, after all this IS a scuba diving thread right. 20c water should be an issue as i swam in waters ranges 18-23 during training and open water dives here.

peak season is said to be in August and i am planning to go that time. at the mean time, i'm going for dives every weekend!
*
Yea the snorkeling was for the other guy who asked. tongue.gif

That's good. Get lots and lots of experience before you go for diving in Bali! As long as you're well prepared with the layers of rash guards and wetsuit, I don't think it will be a problem. You might wanna book early to get good rates as well. smile.gif

*
Tulamben isn't that cold. And it's very much suitable for OWD. It isn't very challenging. Just the wreck only. And the very weird black stone beach. tongue.gif
I wore just a bikini and wetsuit over only. Didn't even wear a rash guard.

Other places like what blackwhitechipsKL mentioned is more cold and has more current.
