Our local Malaysian contestants: http://www.aocc2008.com/event_participants.php#malaysia (coolice & sanko)

The Advanced Overclocking Championship 2008 : Hong Kong (AOCC 2008) will be officially kicking off tomorrow with opening ceremony at Dragon Court, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong smile.gif

This evening I just went to visit coolice and sanko in their room at their hotel. Well, they'll be staying here for the rest of their time at Hong Kong during the competition:

When I reached, coolice was busy preparing the motherboard and sanko was lying on the bed under the blanket watching the TV with a pack of junk food whistling.gif laugh.gif

Anyway, this would be their testbed for the competition smile.gif

Yeah, I already pass your regard to them and immediately sanko said, "Gaban!" laugh.gif

Today they'll be attending two presentation by Asus and Nvidia if I'm not mistaken. Tonight as well they got trip to "The Peak" at Hong Kong for sight-seeing biggrin.gif

Perhaps I'll drop by Dragon Centre tomorrow after work, hopefully will bring some good result and news here smile.gif. coolice complaining that it is sucks that they are not provided with Internet laugh.gif

Sorry guys... I just reached home after dinner with coolice and sanko after the competition. Photos and updates will be coming in a short while as I'm processing them right away now *not even mandi yet* sweat.gif

Anyway guys, they were really very lucky this time... the GFX DOA on them... RAM kaputed... and more problems sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

P/S: Not only them unlucky, actually both Hong Kong and India also scored nothing in the competition which same as Malaysia.

Alright, first update is here. It been a busy day for me as well for my workload sad.gif (I'm working in Hong Kong anyway). Been running a lot of places today and once I reached the competition spot, it already about 7.00pm which the end period of the competition.

Here it is. The place where the competition is held. Dragon Centre, Sham Shui Po smile.gif

user posted image

Once I reached inside, immediately I noticed that the scoreboard showing China leading by 15443 and time left 19 minutes and 29 seconds.

user posted image

The place is divided into three sections of long tables for the competitors.

Here it is, the center part.

user posted image

The right corner.

user posted image

And finally we see someone familiar on the left corner wink.gif

user posted image

Sad to say, both coolice and sanko already about to give up on their bad luck as the time remaining not much... sad.gif

user posted image

Their poor luck on the hardware.

The cups. No bra cups, but winner cups. This year they are giving up to 5th place. Really unlucky for them who took the 5th place last year at Singapore but prize only up till 3rd sad.gif

user posted image

I'm not sure if they bring that big chunk there themselves or it is placed there all the while sweat.gif

user posted image

The champion, China Duo smile.gif *the girl walked away somewhere else taking photos tongue.gif*

user posted image

Australia's fun after the competition ended biggrin.gif

user posted image

Wow, still have time for PSP-ing in the middle of the competition? rolleyes.gif

user posted image

This is Japan contestant if I'm not mistaken. He's cleaning the "mess" on the graphic CPU.

Did they mod the capacitors to the back of the board? huh.gif

I'm not really sure about what's the real case which happened since I'm not there all day long. However, according to coolice and sanko, their graphic card was DOA and they experiencing problem with one faulty RAM and PSU. Anyway, this I'll let them explain when they're back later this week smile.gif

If I'm not mistaken, it was given on the very first day (if not, the second day) they arrived at Hong Kong. They were allowed to play with the hardware in their room. coolice and sanko told me that they could hit 5.2 or 5.3 with dry ice, so actually they got pretty good confident for the competition. sanko in the other way had spend sleepless nights doing overclocking experiment, did you guys noticed his eyes bag? sweat.gif

Well, just that their luck screwed up on the competition day and couldn't provide any result at all.

Luck is an important attribute as well. We can't just make such conclusion that it is biased.

All contestants are allowed to change each of their hardware once. More than once will be consider disqualified. When they received the hardware earlier, they're suppose to test if their hardware is fine and then sign on an agreement that they received this this this hardware, this this this serial number... in good condition smile.gif

Again, luck is an important attribute sad.gif

P/S: I am not a very good overclocker myself. So I only understand partially the terms mentioned by both coolice and sanko. If you all would like to know in details and the actual case, perhaps we wait for them to return from Hong Kong first smile.gif

All in all, they went there and participated. Even thou couldn't produce any result, yet they've learned something and admitted their defeat. So lets hope the better result to come soon.

ok la guys.. shhh, lets move on aite.. the competition is over, lolhalol made an honest point about what he feels.. and its true, this guys in the competition are world class, its not easy at all to get a top 5. And well, i was shocked coz the organisers are established and they have organised competitions worldwide. Also well if its randomly picked then being bias is probably out of the picture..

so sheesh...

well.... this is pure luck... luck comes 1st then skills.... no siding to any country...from my previous oc competition experience, contestants will get to pick their own hardwares and there is fault tolerance but there is a limit for instance each team can only change 2 hardwares max if more than 2 means you are disqualify.... and even if they let u change hardware all the time u wont have the time to do preparation anymore.... such as insulation, vmods and stuffs.... team china is a very good team especially xu gang, i have seen him winning with faulty hardware, after changing the hardware he still can win... really respect him smile.gif

remember the competition in jakarta.... our hardwares died once the competition officially start.... dam bad luck =x

ya, hardware prone to die when its come to extreme OC, mayb sometimes those new hardware just cant hang on till the competition end or even start after some xtreme OC tested b4 the competition.... anyway malaysia team dun give up yet, still got chance to bounce back...

Posting this in Xu Gang room - Drinking beer, Hong Kong

First of all, we would like to express my appreciation to those who shown interest and care towards this competition. Secondly, we are really sorry for the result of AOCC2008. I'll try to make this short and clear. And this competition we do not have a 'cameraman' with use except for vearn27, so i guess i won't be be writing a full report with pictures like what i used to do. I think vearn has done a good coverage on the event on behalf of us. Thanks.

During the 1st day, we reached Hong Kong in the afternoon. At night we got all the hardware for the competition. We were the 1st team to pick the hardwares and a box of Dry Ice. And every hardwares S/N will be recorded by VR-Zone. So there's definately NO BIAS from the organiser. We get to pick our one hardware for the list, which were 20 sets. We only need to return the HDD to the organiser at 5:30PM, 27th July.

When we get back to our room we started to test the setup. For this competition, me and coolice actually decided to focus on Super Pi 8M and 3DMark01SE. Therefore we focus to find stable FSB. The 1st day, which was 26th July we only focus on testing Super Pi. During our testing for the 1st day, coolice did the main overclocking while i was incharged of tweaking. We managed to do 470 FSB. For the 2nd day, 27th July which was the official testing day, coolice tried very hard to find higher FSB and finally managed to clock it to 490 FSB stable for Super Pi 8M. Our prepa

During our testing from Day 1 to Day 2, we use our own HDD. And we didn't bother to install the VGA driver because we focus on Super Pi. So after going to the AOCC2008 Presentation Talk and dinner in the evening, we started Dry Ice cooling. And because coolice was quite familiar with the setup already, we managed to clock it to 5.2GHz stable for Super Pi 8M in a short time. Before this, Team China and Hong Kong told us they can only run Super Pi 8M stable on Dry Ice with 4.7GHz and 5.0GHz. If i remember when we got the 5.2GHz stable for Super Pi, it was already 1 or 2 AM. So i was really tired and fell asleep with knowing it. Coolice continue to insulate the VGA card.

The next day in the morning, which is the Competition Day, coolice told me that the VGA card got problem with driver once i woke up. So this is where to problem started. We suspect it was our HDD that we used which was a very old benching HDD. So once we got to the competition at 10:00AM we immediately test the VGA card with the given WD VelociRaptor with floppy from VR-Zone. So confirmed our VGA cannot install driver and it was actually DOA. We regret that we didn't fully test our hardwares.

So this is the start of our bad luck. coolice need to redo a new insulation on a replaced VGA. Because the 1st Benching is Super Pi, the organiser provided another extra VGA to all contestants so that we won't need to run LN2 on VGA for Super Pi. So i started to power up our rig and find coldbug. It turned out our coldbug on -135 degree, which was very good compared to other competitors. But our coldboot is on -80 degree. So i tried to clock the CPU with the oc saved profile which is 5.2GHz we achieved on Dry Ice. By right it suppose to boot on LN2 easily but it just couldn't. I tried going for higher/lower vcore, vdimm, multiplier, timing and fsb. But it just wouldn't boot. After coolice done insulation on the VGA, he took over to try. After spending around 15 minutes finally he managed to rectify the problem. The oc profile saved on the BIOS was corrupted.

By the time our setup was ready to go, it was around 1:45PM and the competition will be started on 2:00PM. So we do not have time to find our highest CPU clock with LN2. So we tried very hard to go higher 5.2GHz. Even on 5.2GHz it wasn't as stable as our initial testing on Dry Ice. Finally we stop at 5.35Ghz to run Super Pi 8M when the time was going to finish for the benchmark. It was stable to finish the Pi run. Therefore i took over to apply the tweak. Our tweak has a few steps and during the final stage of the tweak, the rig just turned off and the time was only 10 minutes left. So i asked coolice to just use Copywazza which has a shorter process to try to get a final score. When coolice took over for around 10-20 seconds, our rig turned off again and couldn't be switched on anymore. So there goes our Super Pi 8M which was our main focus in this competition.

So we immediately try our best to boot up the rig. From our experience we supposed it was due to condensation. So we removed the CPU pot and clean it up. Then we try to switch on the rig without LN2 but it still refused to. After wasting around 15 minutes then we thought that the mobo failed on us. So we changed a new mobo but still it couldn't boot up. We exchanged CPU to diagnose which hardware died. But still it wouldn't boot. After than we switch power supply and it booted up with single ram. Then we quickly plug in another ram to start the benchmark. But once we plug in the ram again it couldn't boot up. At the same time TEAM Taiwan has problem with their rig. They are kind enough to test our rams and finally the culprit is one piece of our rams.

By the time we are ready for 3DMark01SE, it was already 45 minutes over. So we tried to run the benchmark with 5.3Ghz without taking anymore risk and it passed. So coolice started to clock our VGA card to 760/1250/1600 just to test stability and it passed. After that, coolice applied VMOD and try to clock higher. Once VMOD voltage adjustment was finished, guess what. . . rivatuner refused to recognise our clock. After spending 10 minutes to rectify it, TEAM China confirmed with us it was the rivatuner compatibility with the driver issue. They faced the same issue during their previouse competition. So exchanging a new HDD is the only way. And we need to apply our tweaks all over again. By the time everything was up and ready, it was 15 minutes left. Once coolice tried to clock the GPU properly and run, our rig died again. This time it was due to condensation.

After another failure on 3DMark01, we was really really down. But we still tried to put up a fight. At least to summit score. So after fixing the condensation problem, we carried on with Vantage Performance. Guess what, Vantage went smoothly as ever. For Vantage when the time was around 15 minutes, our mobo died. We only managed to run it stable on 5.3GHz CPU clockspeed and 850/1275/1700 GPU clockspeed which our score was only good enough for 11th or 12th placing. From what we know, TEAM India without VMOD able to hit 820 core speed for GPU.

So this was what happened during the event. Will edit this post for mistakes/error when i get back tomorrow.

ok² no offence

atleast we can learn something here to get ready on this big compy
-always check the hardware
-make sure the HDD/RAM is in the good condition
-no driver issue/conflict etc
-stable mobo bios

apart of that just have skills n luck
- luck should be the last one..

oh man.. i'm really sure we can show something..
keep up a good work.. nod.gif

We need to put another thing into consideration. Our duo coolice and sanko didn't get enough resources, contributors or sponsors to provide them the necessary parts to let them do testing. It is the hardest way they took, isn't? sad.gif

Anyhow, experience gained and we shall be better for the next one smile.gif

overclocking is a young, and expensive enthusiast sport in malaysia. Of course, we see almost 70% of us trying to overclock, but stop to a certain extent, because the higher you go in this padestal, the more expensive the hobby gets.

Secondly, parts here dont change at a rapid pace like in the US or Japan. Due to the demand of newer parts being high, older parts tend to be cheaper and affordable in those countries. unlike here, Where demand are the opposite.

Third, our gdp is not as high compared to tech enthusiast countries, we dont earn as much to support the hobby in the long run, things aint cheap for us, unless youre sponsored or ur just cold rich. As pointed in paragraph one. Our salaries are too weak to support our hobby.

Lastly, overclocking doesnt fit the agenda of the local government, there is no reason to be sponsoring events because the government here has other things in mind, in which its not right for me to point out here.

Considering all those circumstances, i believe the only way we can move up is by self supporting or finding ppl who can support our hobbies. Besides that, i dont see any reason for us to be on par with the worlds best.

On a personal note, as im a noob myself in overclocking, OC can get really technical too, as we get deeper entrenched to it. A background knowledge on electronics and computer architecture is essential, and this requires hardwork. How many of us are willing to put the hours to learn this things ?

ok² no offence

atleast we can learn something here to get ready on this big compy
-always check the hardware
-make sure the HDD/RAM is in the good condition
-no driver issue/conflict etc
-stable mobo bios

apart of that just have skills n luck
- luck should be the last one..

oh man.. i'm really sure we can show something..
keep up a good work..  nod.gif

for the driver issue tat it cant detect the vga,i had experienced it frequently when figuring out highest benchable fsb/ram clock, with both setup that given for competition and setup that local asus rep giving to me,this lead us to think the problems is caused by fsb/ram clocking instead of cacat vga

ram is working fine, its able to do DDR3-1900 7-7-7-16 without prob

bios are set by organiser instead of participant, even it is unstable,we still got to use it,and if u actually did try out p5q3-deluxe,u will know that this board is bad but not all, check out xs and there only few forumer got the good board, but most of them got the sucky 1

and luck is definitely not the last one wink.gif

overclocking is a young, and expensive enthusiast sport in malaysia.

Our salaries are too weak to support our hobby.

i dont think the price is attractive....

ppl send USD10000 per hardware... but end up getting USD few thousand for 1st price.

certainly too much time has been wasted debugging for faulty hardware,
and it is sad that the hardware die one by die
i was initially shocked when saw you guys say 0 points.

so what about those who spend RM 60k on a pair of 3m long audio cables? Or those who spend RM50-60k on car mods do they do any good?

no matter how costly, there is always people who can afford it, else there will be no ferrari's in the whole and all the cars will be proton made,
coolice and sanko represents our country, so at least give some support and dun spray cold water kthx.

actually ah guys.. this one is beyond the NORMAL overclocking.

if you ask me... the true extreme overclocker hardly has to pay for anything...

for me i only pay for my CPUs and HDDs plus pots.

everything else is sponsored or provided.

you dont use your super expensive 9800gx2s and 280gtx and try to break wr. what if the card breaks instead?

i do think Malaysia is slowly developing in this area of sponsorship etc. Team KOC just gotta stick to it and keep pushing. provide good results for any kind of hardware tested and expand their forum coverage when they break a record to more overseas forums.

i remember when they posted 8800GTS record broken when mipmap was still a tweak. to me that was big and i am sure the big companies noticed.

i'm trying to arrange something with Gigabyte to see if i can come up and bench with team koc also. afterall its just a coach or train ride away and its fairly cheap smile.gif we can get Gigabyte to sponsor Ln2 or something.

so yup! hope to catch u guys soon!

and yes dont pour water on them... i have hardly seen more hardworking overclockers than them. seriously... while i was out with the other teams having the time of our lives... Team Malaysia was working and testing...

I couldnt do that man.. will go nuts... haha~

i think i need to break the silence. initially me and coolice was really nervous about the outcome of the competition. honestly i felt it during the 3DMark01SE benchmark already. and eventually it turned out just as what we are afraid of before heading to Hong Kong. if only we noticed the driver issue earlier and rectify it asap, i'm quite confident we may at least get some points. i was really stressed out when i wrote the report back there.

however, throughout the report that i wrote until now, the lowyat community has shown nothing but support. i'm sincerely moved. i deeply appreciate the support shown. although it has been quite some time since i post here.

therefore i promise all of you that we will do something about it. me and coolice will try our best to do something for the malaysia oc community. we are fired up to take the innitiative rather than waiting. it is a sad thing that we are better known internationally, especially coolice rather than our home base. before this ppl in TEAM K.O.C struggle to try to put malaysia in the world oc map but the strength we had before has weaken drastically.

i'm sure there's a lot of potential in malaysia oc scene rather than coolice only. just take dblooi as an example, i guess not more that 10 person knows that he is now very famous internationally now after the Biostar Online Competition. google his nick and you will get some results. there just isn't any good oc platform for the malaysia oc scene to grow. other than that, we believe that's plenty of gurus here that are better than us like raymond, cstlk and so on.

maybe next year it's not me and coolice anymore, maybe someone else much more worthy to take the challenge. we do not wish to dominate anything here.

long story short, let's build the oc community together. we are more than happy to help if able to. after me and coolice settled down, we will start our mission.

theres no issue on how good you fellas are. The point i was trying to get at was probably misunderstand. As a newbie myself, i learnt hard knocks along the way when it came to overclocking. Of course, like i initially told you, overclocking as it gets competitive can be a very expensive hobby. And Radeon, we are looking at masses here, not 2% of the tech community who spend on things coz they have a need for it.

Agree or not, 70% or more overclockers here are average, and that includes myself. The top notch overclockers here, like Lolhalol, Coolice, and Dblooi, spend heaps of money to keep up with the rest of the world. We cant. And thats where our limitations are. I had a chat with a friend the other day and he made a point very clear, You need money to OC, however good you are, if your hardware sucks, u dont go anywhere.

Look at your list of ppl, Sanko, for example. Raymond, CSTKL1, etc, this fellas can afford it. Anyways, no intentions how putting down Malaysia, as i know this guys well, they are very hard workers. So as a local malaysian, and a newbie overclocker, i would love to see KOC do better next time.

Added on August 2, 2008, 9:51 amone more thing, i would suggest that LYN be more transparent to other OC teams as well, and provide a venue/thread for new teams to strut their stuff, as this is not a KOC dedicated forum. A personal opinion. Probably with more competition from local teams, KOC would be performing better. Sad to say, in Malaysia, KOC has no competition from others. Not that i know of.

hrmm... i beg to differ here. lowyat has always been transparent dealing with us. lowyat never approach us for anything. only sean pinned up the thread cause if i remember correctly he thought that it would be a great journal for fellow forummers to see. he was kind enough to asked us before pinning up the thread. other than that, we are just normal members. none of us are mod/admin.

i don't remember that any or the OC United mods disallow anyone/anyteams to post any thread. sean didn't invite me to post the journal. it was me who post it and maybe he felt it was ok to pinned it up. not the other way round. do you really feel our presence here domitating this sub-forum? i do not have a tiny bit of feeling that this sub-forum is somehow a KOC dedicated sub-forum. remember that i posted that we are more known internationally?

for the money/funds for OC, for me it is how far you want to go with the hobby. the main reason KOC was formed is to share the expenses to OC. once we use irenic board, coolice proc, my ram, lolhalol room + air con, sup3rfly power supply to clock. and overclocking is not really expensive if your mind set is correct. unless you are gunning for WR than it is expensive. try to participate in the Super Pi 32M Low Clock Challenge sup3rfly created. i guess you don't need any money to participate it. don't forget the tweaking part in overclocking. it is not always money.

no comments on the competition though.

To be good in oc,you need skill + money. This two is the key of it tongue.gif
If want to do good in low clock challenge, you need ram which is d9gmh/d9gkx base, processor which can do high fsb and board which can do high fsb which mean money as well sweat.gif

I dont know about the others though, but to me i feel it. No hard feelings though, but i did approach DarkScythe once about pinning a thread for POC ( Penang Overclockers Club) and he did tell me, that POC has not done anything significant for the thread to pinned or posted up. But that was history anyways. Well its the fact that KOC is dominant here coz you guys are good in OC thumbup.gif

This i Agree. I think in a team we share equipment and work on OCing smile.gif Coz i am doing it too at the moment. Also yes, its not about the money, but getting the right hardware, but the right hardware do cost a bomb laugh.gif and tweaking it.. yes i overlooked that part

Well i think we have to think of one.. like other forums, its beneficial to be competitive smile.gif

Well, i dont have bad blood or anything, i think its fair that i voice out an opinion and in good ways improve our forum too. Also it would be great help if LYN does post up up n coming competitions so that the local benchers (Newbies like me) would know of. Not just the "in" people smile.gif

After the AOCC2008 ended... other contestants from other countries could proudly steal the camera and tell that they're from which country and which forum while doing some "show" to the crowd and video. I recorded some of it actually, especially that dude from Sweden chilling his mouth with the LN2 laugh.gif

seems like i am invisible....

dudes.....

its not about getting good hardware or passing on a chance...

u guys totally miss the point of extreme overclocking. it's not about who got more money or who can get better parts.. or what not. it's about slowly building a reputation and getting the right contacts and knowing the right people.

like i said. winning is a bonus. but the fact u are able to extreme oc means u have a certain skill the manufacturers want. to them u are a marketing tool. make it happen! it's not about winning some competition or what... it's about building yourself! your contacts and all! thats why i say its not about getting the right parts or having more money! it's about knowing the right people and then proposing to them how YOU can be of service to THEM! how u can help them and what THEY can earn. once they see how much they can earn if they support u in small ways. the big ways will soon come.

@ a1098113 i hope to see u soon in some records then... then we'll see if it is about the right hardware smile.gif

the first thing u can do to prove it is beat my 3dmark06 score in the lyn database smile.gif 24k only piece of cake.

it's a very outdated score of course. but beat that first then we'll go on...

the processor is provided by them, the contestant will pick their processor, depend on their luck if they are lucky they can get a clockable processor if they are not then GG
anyway they will need to return it after the competition smile.gif

..... it all about luck la...chchyong.

One important lesson i learnt yesterday was that even if a ocer is godlike, if the hardware decides to play funny on him, theres nothing he can do about it. As simple as that. That just threw out all that i have learnt about picking and choosing the right hardware even when it comes to the very best things.

the way i see this topic is very2 interesting one...

there is info on OC esp about skills and problem..
about luck...
about frenship...

and most inportant is challenge each other...
its a good thing for our OC community...

bear in ur mind that i dont take side... just wanna tell bedtime story only...

AFAIK...from what coolice have to undergo to get to this stage is so challenging...

coz he is the only guy came to me and try to get dewar and Dice and LN2...

esp. abt pot, dewar, Dry Ice and LN2...
it cost more than RM 5k to get pot and dewar only...
and need more money to buy this DIce and LN2... esp. without staff price...

up to a level that i see coolice start to give up..
then came bro dblooi...who keep on calling me to buy LN2 and sometime DIce...
then they started to get over-active on buying these subzero items....almost every weekend...

so guys, who wanna go for extreme OC @ subzero OC,
make sure that ur wallet and credit card didn't go till subzero...

for those who wanna represent Malaysia for next year OC competition,
start to get those items and start to play with subzero...

and calculate how much u spend on this subzero hobby...

then u will know how a college student need to spend to keep himself up to date about chilling subzero...

~just my 50cent~

Hi all, i think we should have a competition whereby the winner should be a person OC to a certain level using the lease expensive part instead of the most advance hardware. Then all the common IT enthusiasts can join the fight.
