Anyone want to turn your Synology DiskStation into a VPN server (virtual private network)?

download link: Synology VPN centre

Synology VPN Center is an add-on package for Synology® DSM 3.1-1725 (download here) or above. After installing the package, you will be able to turn your DiskStation into a VPN server (virtual private network), allows DSM users over the Internet to access resources shared within DiskStation's local area network. VPN Center supports both PPTP and OpenVPN service.

You can easily run, stop, or uninstall the VPN Center package anytime by going to [Main Menu > Package Management] window in Synology DSM 3.1 management UI.

Just ask yourself what you want for the nas. If basic, just go for cheap and basic. If want more function than just the nas, than go for synology.

good point.

Well, any brief summary of what else I get with the Synology? So far the basic features seems similar but a review site stated that the transfer rate on the Synology is far superior compared to the D-Link. hmm.gif
*
when u buy a synology NAS , actually form 100% of $$$ u paid , 20% is for the hardware and 80% is for the software ( the current + future firmware upgrade)

up-to-date: synology still release for their NAS which they release on year 2007, for example:

DS107e ( year 2007 product.
Version: DSM 3.1-1613; Build Date: 2011/04/11 ( latest firmware)

synology will release 2 major firmware upgrade on March & sept every year.

so if you buy today than you can ensure u will get the new firmware + new feature ( without paying any $$$) for the next 3 to 4 years.

in your case, Dnas vs SyNAS.

Synology is better in feature ( + future firmware upg) + more compatible with others device ( like DLNA, video/audio stream, iphone/android phone support + mobile access /webdav + more)

Dnas will more focus on price, than you can forget the future upg.

one more good point you can consider is Synology NAS have 2nd hand value than Dnas.

like DS110j @ RM 599, 2nd hand also can sell RM 299 and yet still people buying, why? because it can install with the latest firmware.

Have opted for the D-Link DNS-320 paired with a Samsung F3 1TB. Hopefully it'll serve as a good basic NAS with NFS function. Just need a network storage. My reason for this choice is also a tight budget, need to spend on something else as well so I didn't pick the Synology.

Bought the DNS-320 for RM279.

How slow? Mine is about 5-7MB/s which should be quite normal for my 100mbps LAN network.
*
agreed.

10/100 switch - theoretically max speed is 12.5MB/s but normally will be vary from 5 to 9MB/s ( this speed will lower if you using Wireless)

10/100/1000 switch - theoretically max speed is 125MB/s but normally will be vary from 60 to 95MB/s ( this speed will lower if you using Wireless) ( around 100GB ~140GB per hours when you transfer form PC to NAS with gigabit LAN)

G LAN? Gigabit? No, 100mbps is not gigabit, have plans to bump it up to gigabit in the future but a lot of equipments needs to be changed, from my router to all my homeplugs. sweat.gif
*
just change one by one, the switch change to Gigabit first ( 8 port should be RM 1xx) or wireless N+ router ( but if you NB wireless device is g than the speed still stay at g).

Don't have a switch, currently my NAS is connected to my router inside a "store room", my other computers and media players connect to the NAS and router via homeplugs, I think I have a total of 4 homeplugs. A gigabit homeplug is about RM130 (so 4 units about RM520) while a gigabit router is about RM200+ (the one I'm aiming for) so total damage over RM700 to convert to a gigabit network setup. laugh.gif
*
yes.... so.. need to be step by step.. which device need fast speed ( the one usually use to transfer data from / to NAS).. others like play media should be ok for you to use now...

I m having a problem... my synology Ds211j with 2x2tb on raid 1 is having slow transfer speed via lan.

the LAN is running on 10/100mbps connections.

The transfer speed is ard 30kbps
*
with 10/100 switch, u should able to get around 6 ~9MB/s

u can log into the synology admin page and check the resource monitor and check the CPU/RAM/ network usage.

as well as check the HDD status.

BTW, how long did u use this DS211j?

the ds211j is new. Just bought last week...

Issit my setting problem?
i have attached the usage image of me transferring a 1.8gb file to the nas across the LAN network

Memory usage is 29% and the cpu usage is 3%
The max speed is 40kb/s
*
few Q:

1) 10/100 LAN or wireless?
2) did u turn on CIFS performace ( go to synology admin page=> control panel -> win/Mac/NFS section ->tick the Optimize CIFS database operation)?
3) use Fix IP or DHCP for this NAS?
4) go to Storage manager -> HDD management - check did u tick the "Write cache support"
5) upgrade to latest firmware :Version: DSM 3.1-1742; Build Date: 2011/06/08

if above still cannot solve your issue, please install teamviewer and we can provide remote support.
