I been a long time buyer of Bosch and Electrolux appliances. Generally of the mentality European brands are better than Asian ones.
Unfortunately that is only true for appliances that are actually made in EU and sold here as a premium model . We have a Bosch washer that is now 18 years old and the only thing done to it is cleaning and we replaced the belt and seal. We also have an Electrolux washer that was 26 years old before it recently said goodbye to us because we decided to give it away to a needy family. The secret?? They were made in Germany and Italy. All the Bosch washers sold in Asia now are made in China while the Electrolux ones are made in Thailand. All would deliver 3-5 years of problem free experience but whether it would make 10 years or not is a different story and ultimately whether you can put up with the after sales or not.
Recently the house of an aunt of mine had a power surge and that destroyed or damaged many of the electrical goods in that house as well as those of her neighbours.
I found out first hand which brands had good after sales service as her house had all the different brands you could think off. LG washer, Electrolux washer, Electrolux dryer (yes she has 2 washers), Daikin and Panasonic air conditioners, Bosch, Midea and Panasonic refrigerators, Haier deep freezer, Teka and Rinnai hobs, Teka hood, Samsung and Philips TVs and Panasonic as well as Alpha fans.
LG if under warranty they will send a technician in 24 hours. If out of warranty must pay transport fee or self carry. Anything can be repaired but not necessarily economical to do so as they usually have parts for models that are up to 10 years old and sometimes it can be retrofitted with more recent parts if you are willing to pay. Expensive? No. Cheap? I expected it to be cheaper.
Electrolux, horrible service took 6 hours just to get through to the contact centre and then 2 days for a technician to arrive. Parts? Not the most expensive but definitely not cheap, availability limited if it is not a common part. Waited 3 weeks for a circuit board that cost RM300 and the technician had the cheek to tell us the part seldom breaks down therefore that is the reason we had to wait so long for the part. RM420 for the motor and RM180 for labour. It was fixed and it was up and running again which is not bad for a 7 year old washer. He did tell me next time to call him directly instead of going through Electrolux as if it is out of warranty he can do it for less and even if the machine is more than 10 years old he can fix it.
Bosch also the same story, in order to get through to their service centre I went to their master retailer at Publika and asked the staff there to call someone for me.
The one that came same day? Midea. Someone picked up the phone on the 3rd ring and 3 hours later a technician was at her house. 40 minutes later that refrigerator was working again. Compressor RM620, motherboard RM170, bulbs replaced for free and labour charge only RM120. In contrast that Bosch refrigerator's compressor cost RM4k, the motherboard RM1.4k and the labour + transportation for a side by side refrigerator? RM900 as they would not send out a technician to fix it on site. The Panasonic that is similar in size but 2 years older than the Midea took 2 days for a technician to show up, RM900 for the compressor and RM190 for the board. Labour RM140 + RM60 for transportation (technician came to the house)
An interesting snippet from the whole experience? We sold the Panasonic fridge on Mudah for RM600 after it was fixed. That Bosch refrigerator that cost RM11k to buy 6 years ago had to be scrapped as if want to fix must pay the full amount upfront and then wait for who knows how long with no guarantee that it would be problem free.
Thankfully everything reimbursed by TNB which was a consolation but the inconvenience was something else.
Very very good insight. Suggest to pin this somewhere so that this does not get lost in time.
I was kinda surprised that Midea's after sales service is actually quite good. I am considering getting their air conditioner for my smaller rooms, after your post I am seriously considering this option now.
