Star Wars I, II, III, IV, V VI.

Took advantage of the long weekend to do a Star Wars marathon, to brush up on my Star Wars lore before the new chapters.

Most of you would know by now that the 3 episodes made late 70s and early 80s are episodes after the ones made late 90s and early 00s.

I wonder, are there people on this forum who had not watch the Star Wars series?

Having a chance to watch them in their numeric sequence, I have to say the IV, V and VI are still my favorite episodes.

Why?

1) The three main leads have such great chemistry (which episodes I, II and III lack).

2) Because of "lack" off funds, the IV, V and VI episodes had to solve specially effects issues more practically, therefore, the movies are more... "organic". It is obvious that Yoda in episodes V and IV is a puppet, and have to add, he is SO MUCH MORE LIKEABLE in those episodes. You actually "care" for him.

Having said the above, I am actually a skeptic about the new episodes. Even IV, V and VI had their inconsistencies (story wise), and after I, II and III their was much greater.

Star Wars IV: The New Hope is a bright star in terms of movie from the 70s. The fact that it is still placed highly amongst movie goers highlight that.

My concern is with every new episodes, that brightness seems to diminish...

We shall all see, in the future no so far away.

Curious - did you watch them in the order they were made (IV, V, VI, I, II, III) or the universe chronological order (starting from I)?
*
I watched them in numerical sequence (1,2,3, 4...)

Interesting sequence, the way you had chosen to review the material

Re: the spoiler - I've never thought about it that way - so its fascinating that you have to view the character in a new light. But shouldn't Jar Jar Binks share the blame for his role in granting emergency powers in II?

http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/1...-viewing-order/

Because back then, for audiences in 1980 who watched II (Empire Strikes Back) for the first time, the revelation of Vader was a big thing.
So to preserve the surprise factor, this alternate viewing order is proposed for new viewers.

A quote from the website:
"The prequel backstory comes at the perfect time, because Empire Strikes Back ends on a huge cliffhanger. Han is in carbonite, V is L's xxxxx, and the Empire has hit the rebellion hard. Delaying the resolution of this cliffhanger makes it all the more satisfying when Return of the Jedi is watched."
Just wanna say - I try very very hard to leave my brain at the door when approaching the I,II,III - and your analysis DOES NOT help hahaha biggrin.gif

We can easily get confused since JJ Abrams directed Star Trek as well.

I vomit on Star Trek laugh.gif

Only reason I watch Star Trek was Denise Crosby  brows.gif
Moving on...
People should have just let the Emperor die in peace pieces back in 1983.

Then some came up with the idea of 'Dark Empire Trilogy'  sweat.gif

For years Luke was portrayed as the protagonist.

Difficult to accept him as a antagonist.
Will Luke turn evil in this next trilogy?

Even Hamill wants Luke to be evil.

*
There are alot of circumstantial evidence that points towards this direction.

The fact that Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker's character has not been showed in any of the trailer (with the exception of his robotic hand) seem to fuel this hypothesis further...

We shall see people... We shall see...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Watched this as IMAX 3D TGV 1Utama.

It is GOOD!

You know what, I thought I kept away from all the hype/news/ads/trailer for this movie, and STILL I kinda sorta know what is gonna happened in the movie...

Why?

I can only think of two reasons

1) In terms of storyline, they stuck to "tried and true" Star Wars lore (so for Star Wars fans out there, you can celebrate)

2) They marketing is THAT good. Maybe ads for this movie is delivered through our drinking water (Osmosis?? laugh.gif)

Joking aside, some parts of this movie is just brilliant and others...

Wait, I am getting ahead of myself!!

The Good

The main casts from episode 4,5, and 6 all returned!

The lack of Luke Skywalker in the trailer is explained.

BB 8 is going to over take R2D2 in terms of robot cuteness.

There is no annoying "Jar Jar Bings-like character"

No over the top LENS FLARE!

The Bad

Kylo Ren character, is really badly developed.

Some parts of the script is just too... clunky! Surprising, since Lawrence Kasdan is involved (Empire Strikes Back)

The Ugly

Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux is totally unrecognizable.

They NEEDED Max von Sydow for THAT!!

The character Rey/Ren names are too similar, and can be very confusing!!

Please understand this is just my opinion.

No matter what I say here this movie is going to MAKES AN OBSCENE AMOUNT OF MONEY!

Another thing I enjoy was, it was VERY clear, who the REALLY fanboys are in the cinema (you hear them gasp, you hear them laugh, and you hear them cry...)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

This is what I texted my friends after watching the movie.

QUOTE
First Act: blah blah blah

Second Act: more blah blah blah

Final Act: oh my freaking god, it IS a Star Wars movie, and they squeezed all the action into the third act!!!

I don't mean to make the movie sounds like a drag, it is not.

Surprises are aplenty.

Disney has proved to the world that the standalone Star Wars movies, are GREAT!!!

Heck after this I even welcome the Han Solo stand alone movie (and I now understand what they are going to do). And on that note I even welcome Harrison Ford back in the Indiana Jones sixth installment (get the whip cracking already!!! What the heck are they waiting for)

Disney is really having an excellent year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

Well....

Have I GOT a story to share with you.

And it goes like, a long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... laugh.gif

I did not planning to watched this today.

I had purchased tickets for IMAX 3D tomorrow.

Wondered into a cinema today to watch WONDER, and the timing was off... and was surprised that Star Wars is available today, and I had free tickets so...

I watched it today as well... I am a pig, I know...

So, how is this movie.

Okay, I have to admit, with it's pedigree, this movie is in a tough spot.

SO MUCH EXPECTATION is on it.

With that said, it did try very hard to PLEASE everyone, and it is THAT, which I feel is it's stumbling block...

The Good

Keeping the character, Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron character (it was rumored that this character, in the original script, did not survive the first movie), was a good call.

Making Mark Hamill's character Luke Skywalker, a more manic version of Old Ben Kenobi in the Desert Tatoonie again, also a good call.

Laura Dern's (hey you, lady from the first Jurassic park movie) Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo character, wow!

The first 10 mins of the movie, BRILLIANT!

The Bad

So, in short, how is this 2 hour and 30 minutes movie?

Really guys, would what I say here matter, you will watch this movie never the less.

With that, My Two Sen.

Just rewatched Star Wars in Imax 3D, not sure if there is much difference compare to the 2D version, maybe the Imax sound is better....

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This movie is all about... pedigree.

The Rogue (Han Solo).

The Ship (Millennium Falcon).

The Sidekick (Chewbacca).

The First Love (Qi'ra)

It has it ALL.

I keep mixing up Thandie Newton with Zoe Saldana. Hmmm....

For the people NOT in the know (where have you been?), this is Han Solo origin movie.

And it really has it all, where is he from, who his first love is, how he became rogue everyone love (

)

Ron Howard has always been very good to bring out the human interest to whatever projects he is involved in, and this is no different which actually adds to this movie.

Is Alden Ehrenreich young Solo?

I cannot say I am a fan of his. I can only remember him, from the movie, Beautiful Creatures (2013) which was not a big thing... After watching this, he... sold young Solo (great backstory to the name).

Jonathan Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan wrote the script, which brings me back to my pedigree comment earlier.

The only thing that did not work for me is Donald Glover, as young Lando Calrissian...

Oh, Woody Harrelson is also in this.

Was actually surprise that

is in it!!?!

Will thing be another big money earner for Disney?

Has there been any doubt? (Not sure if it will make more than Rogue One)

If this is the level of quality Disney can maintain for Star War stand alone movie, bring them on.

My Two Sen.

P.S. please forgive any more than usual typo, it is 3:24am, and I don't have any mental faculties left...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

What do I think of this?....

So So only...

Would it have been better if J.J. Abrams stayed on for the Episode 8?

Maybe

The main problem is that Episode 8 deviated too much from J.J. Abram's original ideas... it was difficult to tie all loose ends here, so this movie is a bit of a mix bag... Carrie Fisher dying, did not help matters I suppose...

The were actually two points in the movie I exclaimed W.T.F., I even surprised myself...

And the ending....

There was ONE surprise for me, and for a movie that supposedly cost USD 200 mill, that in itself is surprising.

The best way I can state Kylo Ren and Rey in this movie is to quote
QUOTE
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, stated by Sherlock Holmes.

So this movie is either going to bake Disney a Gazillion dollar (if every red blooded teenager and Star Wars die hard fan buys in, go watch it SEVERAL TIMES OVER) or end up this year BIGGEST BOMB.
