Star Wars was a mainstream success, majority of the audience loved it. So in that regard, it's not a cult film. But you are also right to claim that it has since picked up loyal cult followers.
agreed, while its fame has faded into obscurity, it was HUGE when a new hope was first released, and the ensuing sequels and prequels were also popular, so it's not accurate to say that it's a cult film. and to funnybone, I'm pretty sure you'll get the rough idea of 'cult' after you watched the film ''the boondock saints'...
