actually vista not killing the system..its oni eat more resource than XP because of its interface,so if u like the vista interface, bear with that, if dont turn back to XP, for me im still using dual boot, XP just for my modding activity, other than that, im using vista..but for now, my XP have not been booted almost 3months! laugh.gif

for me it was the other way around. dual boot vista and xp, just used vista for simple stuff like internet, movies, some game benchmarking for dx10, or some troubleshooting for friends who used vista. other than that i used xp only, coz les problems with program incompatibility.

Huh?? Are you kidding?

1) You don't need a very high end graphic card nor RAM nor processor. And what does cooling has to do with VISTA?? This is not O/C!!!!
For VISTA, 1GB is sufficient.(But 2 GB is recommended..heck..even 2GB for XP is recommended...RAM so cheap). My old Athlon XP can run VISTA with 768MB and Aero Interface with a 6200 and my laptop with integrated 6100 Geforce Go also can run Aero Interface. All you need is a DX9 card, nothing special.

2) It is NOT going to kill your system.

TS: You don't actually need a separate HDD for VISTA, same HDD with separate partition will do. And i don't think multi O/S in a PC will have any effect on performance becoz only one is active any one time. I've 4 OS in my PC....XP, VISTA, MAC OSX, UBUNTU..no problem at all.

Basically:
1) Partition your hard disk.(if needed)
2) Install XP on partition 1/hdd 1.
3) Install VISTA on partition 2/hdd 2.

Done.

VISTA will automatically detect your XP OS and present a menu to boot from each OS..

I totally agree AND this is the i'm using FOR my Computer.

why run both? just migrate to Vista and be done with. if you ever need to run windows xp, you can use a virtual machine like Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx), which is free.

anyway, this is what i do

If your doing "virtualisation", there will be a sacrifice for performance as the computer will have to maintain/run/power dual OSes running simultaneously, anyway I'll let "FarCry3r", do the rest of the talking, he's the best in the "virtualisation" field.

i agree. for instance, don't expect to run a kick ass game when running windows xp virtually. i just use it to test stuff and install apps that don't agree with vista.

May I know what software do you use to virtualise it? I prefer Parallels Workstation over VMWare, how about you?

I would use Paralllels if I was using a Mac, but VMWare gets my vote for the PC.

Your a Mac user too? Me too, I'm using a MacBook. I've got both Paralles Desktop and VMWare Fusion 2 on my Mac. I use Parallels for more features but VMWare when I want faster speeds. I'm not sure whether it's my head but I think thats the different.
