Poulsen signs for Juve
Monday 14 July, 2008
Juventus have officially confirmed the signature of Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen.

The Old Lady have been searching for midfield reinforcements after the failure of Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes last season.

And after flirting with Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, the Biancocelesti have opted for Danish international Christian Poulsen.

Juve will pay £7.8m, but they will be allowed to do so in three instalments.

Initially Sevilla will receive £3.8m with £2m to follow in July 2009 and July 2010.

Poulsen has signed a five-year deal in Turin and will be officially presented tomorrow.

The fans could give the former Schalke man a cool reception after widespread disappointment that a deal for Alonso wasn’t completed.

Poulsen: I'll prove you wrong
Monday 14 July, 2008
New Juventus signing Christian Poulsen insists he wants to “surprise the Italian public” who have such a poor perception of him.

The Dane is mainly famous in the peninsula for his run-ins with Francesco Totti and Kaka, where he earned himself a reputation for provocation.

“I hope to surprise the Italian public, who consider me a rough player, by proving that I have good technique,” said the former Sevilla midfielder.

“I will have time to prove myself and give people a better opinion of Poulsen. Sevilla was an excellent experience, but now I am proud to be at Juve.”

The Juventus fans were furious at the decision to spend £7.8m on the player and have launched protests against his signature.

“I am very happy to become part of such a prestigious club. Juventus are one of the most important sides in the world and I hope to do well here,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I am a defensive midfielder, but I am also able to play in a more advanced position.”

Poulsen underwent his medical this morning at the Fornaca clinic in Turin before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.

He will be officially presented to the Press on Thursday afternoon.

Ranieri: Poulsen final Juve buy
Monday 14 July, 2008
Claudio Ranieri has disappointed Juventus fans by announcing, “our transfer market is closed” after signing Christian Poulsen.

The unpopular Danish midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year contract to complete his £7.8m move from Sevilla this evening.

“With Poulsen our transfer activity is essentially over. Now we are just missing a second choice goalkeeper,” said Ranieri from their Pinzolo pre-season training camp.

“I am very happy with the results and thank the club for having given me a solid squad.”

Poulsen's arrival has been met by widespread protests among the Bianconeri supporters, who would have preferred Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

“With Poulsen we continue the project that started before I arrived here to build a Juventus side at the highest level.

“I asked for two players for every position and I got them. Now we have to work hard and push it all the way.

“With this new signing we have quality in midfield. Whoever is unconvinced by Poulsen's talents will just have to be proved wrong.”

Andrade under the knife
Monday 14 July, 2008
Juventus defender Jorge Andrade's career is hanging by a thread after he underwent knee surgery.

The Portuguese international has barely played in the last two seasons due to various injuries and will miss all of the 2008-09 term as well.

He suffered the recurring fractured kneecap during pre-season training at Pinzolo last week.

This evening Juventus announced he had undergone surgery to reduce the fracture to his left kneecap in Lisbon.

The operation was “an ostheosynthesis using tissue taken from the hip-bone.”

A representative from the Bianconeri's medical staff was also present in the operating theatre.

It is a bitter blow for the 30-year-old, who joined Juve in 2007 after five years at Deportivo La Coruna.

Before then he had featured for Estrla Amadora and Porto.

Juve tumble to Piacenza defeat
Tuesday 15 July, 2008
Juventus lost 1-0 to Piacenza on Olof Mellberg's debut, while the Amauri-David Trezeguet partnership failed to shine.

New signings Amauri and Mellberg - in a central defensive position - started the match in Trento, while Tiago Mendes was in charge of the midfield.

Vincenzo Iaquinta, Hasan Salihamidzic and Momo Sissoko were out with minor injuries, so Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni were in the initial line-up.

Goalkeeper Mario Cassano performed saves to deny Pavel Nedved, Amauri and a Trezeguet header early on, but they quickly ran out of steam.

Piacenza took a surprise lead through Argentine Simon, who got in front of Nicola Legrottaglie to volley in Anaclerio's cross from the left.

Trezeguet thought he had equalised, but the goal was disallowed for an offside position.

Claudio Ranieri made six changes at the break and Serie B side Piacenza made 10, but the performance remained below par.

Among the highlights for Juve fans were teenage Swedish midfielder Albin Ekdal and Zdenek Grygera's seasonal debut.

Juventus First Half: Belardi; Zebina, Legrottaglie, Mellberg, Molinaro; Marchionni, Zanetti, Tiago, Nedved; Amauri, Trezeguet
Juventus Second Half: Nocchi; Zebina (Grygera), Legrottaglie, Ariaudo, Molinaro; Esposito, Zanetti, Ekdal, Rossi; Amauri (Castiglia), Pasquato

Calcio Debate: Is Juve’s Squad Complete?

Claudio Ranieri has infuriated many Juve fans by declaring that the club will be signing no more outfield players this summer. So is the Tinkerman right in thinking that the Bianconeri’s squad is complete?

Secco Banned From Transfers!

It is the news that will surely delight Juventini, but disappoint all the fans of other clubs – Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco has been banned by the Calcio Federation from making any transfers for a month.

The much-maligned Secco is not the most popular figure among Juve supporters following a long line of blunders in the transfer market since replacing Luciano Moggi two years ago.

The chief has become notorious for his expensive purchases of the likes of Jean-Alain Boumsong, Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes, who joined the club for a total fee of around €27m. He has also been criticized for attempting to offload Giorgio Chiellini last summer to Manchester City.

However, Secco will not be able to immerse himself in any more catastrophic transfers for a while after receiving a one month ban from the Disciplinary Commission of the Federcalcio.

The punishment was handed out for an offence Secco committed, along with former Juve Vice President Roberto Bettega, in negotiations with Genoa over young defender Domenico Criscito.

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has received a two month suspension, while Giambattista Pastorello and Alessandro Zarbano, vice-chairman and managing director respectively of the Rossoblu have been banned for 15 days. Juve have also received a €10k fine, €15k for Genoa.

It is unlikely that the news of Secco’s suspension will disappoint too many Juve fans, although it may have come about too late to make any difference this summer, as the Bianconeri have already announced that they will be buying no more outfield players before the transfer window closes.

Camoranesi: «Qualifying for the Champions League is our first objective»

«We have the chance to get closure on a path we began two years ago. They've been peculiar seasons: in the first we had to return to Serie A, in the second we had to qualify for Europe. Now we need to take a further step and go through the preliminaries; qualifying for the Champions League proper would be the crowning achievement of this path». Mauro German Camoranesi nails the first objective of the season.

Before talking about winning the Scudetto and the Champions League, you have to get into the main European tournament, and then you can concentrate on new targets, knowing full well that the team is capable of fighting on every front: «Juventus are competitive. We have the skills in midfield. I think the other teams know they'll be facing the usual Juve, ready to fight to win something important. In the big teams it's important to have at least two players for each role, because it allows them to rest when necessary, and we have them. International-level players have joined us, and that's what Juventus needed».

Friendlies: Juve conquer Denmark
Wednesday 23 July, 2008
Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta secured Juventus’ prestigious 2-1 European friendly victory away to Brondby.

The Turin giants are embarking on a tour of the continent to prepare for the Champions League preliminary round.

Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Momo Sissoko all made their seasonal debuts.

Amauri combined well with Iaquinta and the Brazilian broke the deadlock with a splendid header.

Just before half-time the 2006 World Cup winner also got on the scoresheet at the end of a solo effort to give Juventus a 2-0 lead in Denmark.

Coach Claudio Ranieri immediately introduced Zdenek Grygera, David Trezeguet and youth product Fausto Rossi for the second half.

The Frenchman was fielded as a lone striker supported by Pavel Nedved, Hasan Salihamidzic and Rossi in a new tactical experiment.

Brondby were fitter, though, and it showed in the long run, as with time they began to cause serious problems.

Katongo’s header thumped the crossbar and Williams struck the upright, while the Danes did get one back through Farnerud’s penalty.

Trezeguet could have made it 3-1, but his goal was ruled out by the offside flag.

The next friendly test is on Saturday with Germans Borussia Dortmund.

Juventus: Buffon (Chimenti); Zebina (Grygera), Legrottaglie (Chiellini), Mellberg (Ariaudo), Molinaro; Salihamidzic, Zanetti, Ekdal (Sissoko), Nedved (Esposito); Iaquinta (Trezeguet), Amauri (Rossi)

Alex earns Scirea award

Friday 25 July, 2008
Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has won the 2008 Gaetano Scirea award by a landslide margin.

The prize is handed out each year to the player who journalists believe serves as an example for how to behave on and off the field.

Last year Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi won the 16th edition of the award, which takes its name from one of the greatest Italian players of all-time.

As well as being one of five players to win every national and international trophy recognised by FIFA, Juventus legend Scirea was renowned for his sportsmanship and dignity.

Del Piero received 281 votes for this year’s title, leaving him easily clear of Roma’s Christian Panucci on 35.

Veteran striker Vincenzo Montella and fiery Inter stopper Marco Materazzi received just 19 votes each.

Friendly: Juve dominate Dortmund
Sunday 27 July, 2008
Juventus thumped Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in their own back yard in today’s rescheduled friendly with Vincenzo Iaquinta bagging a brace.

The match was originally set to be played on Saturday evening, but was postponed after a freak thunderstorm struck the Westfalenstadion.

Despite the fact the Bundesliga starts earlier and so Borussia are at a more advanced stage of pre-season preparation, the Bianconeri dominated the match.

Pavel Nedved went close in the opening seconds and five minutes in Amauri had been left unmarked to tap in Zdenek Grygera’s cross.

There were scoring opportunities for David Trezeguet, Nedved and Momo Sissoko, while Gianluigi Buffon was only really tested by Kuba’s snapshot.

Iaquinta and Alessandro Del Piero replaced Amauri and Trezeguet for the second half and the former Udinese hitman almost netted with his first touch, a goalline clearance denying his lob.

It was only postponed by a few minutes before Iaquinta comfortably got his head to a Nedved cross.

Del Piero threaded through for another Iaquinta opportunity and the third goal was created by summer signing Christian Poulsen’s long ball forward for a Iaquinta chip.

Borussia only managed to hit the back of the net from the penalty spot with Kruska.

Chiellini calls for signings
Thursday 31 July, 2008
Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has spoken out in favour of the Bianconeri returning to the market.

President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has stressed that the Old Lady have done their business for the summer, but there are constant Press rumours linking them with star names.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso had been expected to arrive before the purchase of Christian Poulsen and Chiellini thinks it would be a sound investment.

“There are no doubts over Alonso,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “He is a great player who could help us.

“There could be others like him but I’m sure that the club will bring in another great champion to allow us to make the leap of class needed to fight Milan, Inter and Roma.”

A possible move for Inter’s Dejan Stankovic was derailed by protests from the Juve fans.

“It’s only natural that Dejan, having played for Inter for so many years, wouldn’t be welcomed that warmly at first, but players like him know how to win over fans,” Chiellini insisted.

“I don’t know what the club will decide to do, but I know that if Stankovic arrived he would undo all the ill feeling he amassed with the Juve fans while playing for the Nerazzurri.”

Finally, Chiellini discussed the possibility of a move for Alberto Aquilani, who is currently considering a new contract offer from Roma.

“We have played together for the national side since we were 15 and our parents are close friends,” he explained.

“We speak a lot and I have always told him to come to Turin, but he has to make his decision and he is obviously very attached to Roma, having grown up there.”

Friendly: Trez shoots down Gunners
Saturday 2 August, 2008
Juventus have beaten hosts Arsenal in the Emirates Cup thanks to a controversial David Trezeguet strike.

The Frenchman hit the back of the net twice, both times offside, but the second was allowed to stand.

Claudio Ranieri fielded the unusual front pairing of Vincenzo Iaquinta and Trezeguet against the hosts in the Emirates Cup this afternoon. He split the squad into two, so the others will feature against Hamburg on Sunday.

Aaron Ramsey tested Gigi Buffon with a shimmying run and low shot on 28 minutes and the Bianconeri struggled to create chances. They hit the back of the net on 35 minutes with a Trezeguet glancing header, though he was flagged offside on Pavel Nedved's cross-shot.

It was only a warning, as moments later Trezeguet got his goal in not entirely dissimilar circumstances. The Frenchman was again offside as he stretched to prod Iaquinta's free kick into the far corner, but this time the goal was allowed to stand.

Philippe Senderos needed a well-timed tackle to stop Marco Marchionni's counter in the box, as the goal seemed to shake Juve out of their lethargy.

The Gunners threw on former Milan transfer target Emmanuel Adebayor along with Abou Diaby and William Gallas. Arsenal improved and Hoyte's cross was inches past the head of Emmanuel Eboue.

Ranieri: We passed Arsenal test
Sunday 3 August, 2008
Claudio Ranieri cannot help but be pleased with Juventus’ latest Euro victory over Arsenal and looks ahead to today’s meeting with Hamburg.

The Bianconeri’s summer tour in preparation for the Champions League preliminary round has been an unqualified success with victories on Brondby, Borussia Dortmund and now Arsenal’s home turf.

“I am happy with this win,” smiled the Coach following Saturday’s 1-0 result in the Emirates Cup.

“It is true that in the first half Arsene Wenger fielded many youngsters, who had nonetheless done well in previous outings.

“But in the second period the big guns came on and my lads maintained the same performance levels. I’d say we passed an excellent test.”

David Trezeguet scored the only goal of the game, although replays suggest he was in an offside position when redirecting Vincenzo Iaquinta’s free kick.

Juventus have a chance to win the trophy, as they are on four points – three for the win, one for each goal scored – when taking on Hamburg this afternoon.

Real Madrid currently lead following their 2-1 victory over Hamburg and they face Arsenal later today.

“Now we must focus on Hamburg and, as promised, I’ll play those who did not start on Saturday. The Germans played well against Real and beat us last year, so this time around we want to do better.”

Among those set to start at the Emirates are Amauri, Alessandro Del Piero, Christian Poulsen and Mauro Camoranesi.

It is all good preparation for the Champions League preliminary round, which will be against either Artmedia Bratislava or Tampere United of Finland.

Friendly: Hamburg hit Juve
Sunday 3 August, 2008
Juventus saw two players stretchered off and a goal disallowed in their 3-0 Emirates Cup defeat to Hamburg in the Emirates Cup.

Claudio Ranieri changed the entire starting XI that had beaten Arsenal 1-0 yesterday, testing the new front pairing of Amauri and Alessandro Del Piero. Hamburg had lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in stoppages, but made relatively few adjustments.

The Germans dominated the first half and Antonio Chimenti seemed less than reliable, confirming Juve’s intention to buy another goalkeeper this summer. He struggled with Jarolim and Trochowski efforts before he hesitated, allowing Paulo Guerrero to sweep home Boateng’s ball over the top.

Zidan and Jarolim wasted more chances before the break and Ranieri made changes with Zdenek Grygera, Cristian Molinaro, Marco Marchionni and Giorgio Chiellini coming off the bench. Only one of those substitutions was forced, as Dario Knezevic was stretchered off.

Manninger joins Juventus
Tuesday 5 August, 2008
Austrian international goalkeeper Alex Manninger has signed for Juventus and is relishing the chance to play understudy to Gigi Buffon.

Manninger spent last season on loan to Siena from Red Bull Salzburg and impressed in Tuscany.

The 31-year-old has now joined Juve in London and is ready to give his all to the Bianconeri cause.

“I am very happy to have arrived at Juventus,” Manninger said. “Here football really counts.

“I have gained a lot of experience playing for smaller sides but I was at Arsenal a few years ago and I wanted to return to a big club at the highest level.”

Manninger is unlikely to be called into action on many occasions with Azzurri No 1 Buffon holding the gloves.

“We all know Buffon’s ability and his role in this squad,” he continued. “Only one goalkeeper can play at a time but in a squad of 25 there must be more than one custodian and we have three.

“I’m ready to give as much of a contribution as I can make to this team.”

Friendly: Juve impress United
Wednesday 6 August, 2008
Alessandro Del Piero shone as Juventus gave Manchester United a real tussle at Old Trafford, drawing 0-0 with the European champions.

The Bianconeri continued their tour in preparation for the Champions League preliminary round - who it has now been confirmed will be Artmedia Bratislava after a 7-3 aggregate win over Tampere United.

Their last visit here five years ago ended in the Final defeat to Milan on penalties but, just like that day, Pavel Nedved was unavailable. The injured Czech's role was taken by Hasan Salihamidzic, moving Giorgio Chiellini to left-back.

Among those watching from the stands was England - and former Juve - manager Fabio Capello.

Mauro Camoranesi's shot was deflected over by Wes Brown from Del Piero's counter, while at the other end Darren Fletcher fired over after springing the offside trap. Camoranesi was fortunate to get away with it when he accidentally handed the ball to Carlos Tevez, then a good Rio Ferdinand tackle finally halted the Argentine-Italian inside the box.

Del Piero really should have scored on 20 minutes with a fantastic opportunity. Camoranesi went on another mazy run and rolled across for the unmarked captain from eight yards, but he hesitated to get the ball on to his stronger foot and allowed the United defenders to fling themselves in his path.

Juve duo to miss a month
Monday 11 August, 2008
Juventus will have to do without Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni for around a month.

Zanetti sustained a muscular problem during training last week, while Marchionni reported an injury on Sunday.

Claudio Ranieri knew that he would be missing the two midfielders for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Artmedia, but the pair also look likely to miss the start of the Serie A season.

Marchionni, who had been on good form in pre-season friendlies, has damaged his right thigh and tests predict he will need at least three weeks to heal
.

Meanwhile, Zanetti’s complaint may be more serious than initially feared and the former Inter man could also be kept on the sidelines until mid-September.

Fortunately for Ranieri, Mauro Camoranesi is back in action and Pavel Nedved, Momo Sissoko and Christian Poulsen are ready to cover the midfield against Artmedia.

However, there are still reports in Tuttosport that Juve could be tempted to make an audacious bid for Roma star Alberto Aquilani to fill the void.

Juve are 95th in the world
Tuesday 12 August, 2008
Roma are flying high but Juventus are only the 95th best team in the world, claims the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

The IFFHS uses a variety of statistics gathered from all official matches to produce its annual rankings.

However, while the studies are based on logical calculations, they can produce some questionable results.

European champions Manchester United are top of the pile, but amazingly Scottish giants Rangers, who crashed out of the Champions League preliminaries to Lithuanian side Kaunas, are in second place.

Chelsea are third, while Bayern Munich and Barcelona are fourth and fifth respectively.

Roma are flying the flag for Italy in sixth spot ahead of Scudetto winners Inter in 10th, possibly due to their superior European campaign.

Fiorentina are in 12th and Milan manage 15th in spite of a miserable season, but Juventus are not amongst the elite.

In fact, the Old Lady are languishing down in 95th and will need to impress in this term’s Champions League to rejoin the giants.

IFFHS’ Top 10 sides:

1. Manchester United
2. Rangers
3. Chelsea
4. Bayern Munich
5. Barcelona
6. Roma
7. Liverpool
8. Arsenal
9. Boca Junior
10. Inter

Giovinco The New Zidane - Furino

Former Juventus midfielder Giuseppe Furino believes Sebastian Giovinco can follow in the footsteps of Zinedine Zidane, Michel Platini, Alessandro Del Piero and Roberto Baggio, thus establishing himself as a Bianconeri legend.

Giovinco has been the star of the show for Italy at the Olympics and many tip the Juventus starlet to go on and become one of the greatest players in football.

Furino, who made over 360 appearances for the club during the 1970’s and 80’s, believes the 21-year-old can emulate players of the great Juve teams of the past such as Zidane and Platini.

Furino told Tuttosport: “Giovinco is the number 10 of the future. Sebastian can and has the right to succeed people like Platini, Baggio, Zidane and Del Piero.

“I have seen Giovinco play at the Olympics and he is unstoppable. People fear him and this means he is strong and it’s a great sign.

“Giovinco has the qualities to relive the times of the great Juve number 10s, because he plays like them and he has the talent.

“I really hope he gets a call up from Marcello Lippi when he returns from the Olympics. [Lippi] should take Giovinco to the senior side.”

A Number of top teams have been trying to prize the Juve man away from Turin. Palermo tried to take him as part of the Amauri deal but the Bianconeri played hardball.

Reports in Italy suggest Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has shown an interest, but it’s unlikely that the Old Lady will allow Giovinco to leave.

Camo: We need a decade
Tuesday 12 August, 2008
Juventus midfielder Mauro Camoranesi concedes that it will take at least 10 years to recreate Fabio Capello’s Bianconeri.

The Old Lady exceeded expectations last season to secure third place in their first campaign back in Serie A after the Calciopoli scandal.

And while there are high hopes ahead of the start of Juve’s Champions League campaign, Camoranesi is cautious.

“Capello’s side had more quality,” the Argentine-born winger told La Stampa.

“It will take at least 10 years to get to that level if the club continues to move at this speed.”

Juve begin their Champions League campaign against Slovak side Artmedia Bratislava on Wednesday evening.

“The Champions League is an important objective for us because we have been out of Europe for two years,” Camo said.

“We are all looking forward to it. We are reaching the end of the journey we started in Serie B.

“It is impossible to make any predictions now. It all depends on how the games go.

“I really hope I can play in another Champions League Final, but this time I really want to win it.”

Camoranesi concluded by stressing his belief that Inter remain strong favourites to retain the Scudetto.

“The League is different to Europe,” he said. “Anything can happen but we aren’t any closer or further away from Inter than we were last term.

“Inter are much stronger than last year, They have lots of players with plenty of quality.”

CL: Alex inspires four-star Juve
Wednesday 13 August, 2008
Juventus crushed Artmedia 4-0 in the Champions League preliminary round with Mauro Camoranesi, Giorgio Chiellini, Nicola Legrottaglie and an Alex Del Piero screamer.

The Bianconeri had not played in this competition for two years, but were back after the Calciopoli scandal and a period in Serie B. The first leg was in Turin, but Juve played with their gold away strip.

Claudio Ranieri put his faith firmly in the old guard, as Christian Poulsen was the only new boy in the starting XI. Pavel Nedved was suspended, while Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni are injured, Sebastian Giovinco and Claudio Marchisio on Olympic duty. Fuelling reports he is to be sold over the next fortnight, Tiago Mendes was not even on the bench. It was an historic moment for Gianluigi Buffon, playing his 500th official match in club competition.

It took seven minutes for Juventus to break the deadlock after stringing together a series of corner kicks. Mauro Camoranesi started the swift passing move that sent Zdenek Grygera clear, but when the defender lost his footing, Camoranesi was ready for the powerful strike from 10 yards at the near post.

Ranieri was forced into a change, as Urbanek accidentally clattered into Grygera - who was his teammate and friend at Under-21 level - and the Juventus man was stretchered off. In a curious tactical decision, Vincenzo Iaquinta came on, moving Salihamidzic to defence.

Nedved given all-clear
Friday 22 August, 2008
Juventus breathe a sigh of relief after learning Pavel Nedved will be fit for the Champions League encounter with Artmedia.

The Czech caused worried scenes when he limped off during the Trofeo Moretti match with Milan last night.

Tests have now confirmed it is only a bruise on his left calf and Nedved will therefore be available for selection next week in Bratislava.

He had missed the first leg, which Juve won 4-0 in Turin, due to a ban and was eager to make his Champions League comeback after two years.

Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta are also recovering well from minor knocks, while Mauro Camoranesi is ready after missing Italy’s 2-2 friendly draw with Austria on Wednesday.

Marco Marchionni and Cristiano Zanetti are certain to miss out with thigh strains.

Amauri fought back from a sensational Artmedia opener to send Juventus back into the Champions League, 5-1 on aggregate.

The Bianconeri already had a foot in the group phase after their 4-0 first leg victory, but didn't want to rest on their laurels in Slovakia. Giorgio Chiellini, Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni were out injured, but Pavel Nedved returned from suspension.

Claudio Ranieri had fielded only one new signing in the starting XI in Turin, but bumped that up to four in Bratislava, including a revitalised central midfield pairing of Christian Poulsen and Claudio Marchisio.

Nedved was a doubt with a calf problem, but was in good shape and struck the side-netting with an angled drive 11 minutes in, while Nicola Legrottaglie nodded a Mauro Camoranesi free kick over.

However, it was Artmedia who broke the deadlock with a splendid strike. A Kozak cross came in from the right for Fodrek's fantastic acrobatic scissor-kick volley from eight yards that whipped past Gigi Buffon at the near post.

Juventus should've equalised moments later, but Amauri's header into the ground from Christian Molinaro's cross was denied by the far upright with the goalkeeper well beaten. Vincenzo Iaquinta also went very close when springing the offside trap, but a deflection aided the goalkeeper in making a save.

Serie A Week 1 - 31/8/08 (19.30 UK)
Fiorentina 1 - 1 Juventus
Nedved 39 (J), Gilardino 89 (F)
Stadio Franchi

Alberto Gilardino snatched a last-gasp equaliser for 10-man Fiorentina when Juventus thought they had won it with Pavel Nedved.

This has always been a bitter rivalry, but the two clubs have acted to calm the waters in recent years and Presidents Andrea Della Valle and Giovanni Cobolli Gigli sat together in the stands, promising to go to dinner afterwards. It was also a battle for the Scudetto between two of the five contenders, especially after Inter, Roma and Milan stuttered earlier this weekend.

Unfortunately, injuries ruled out Adrian Mutu, Riccardo Montolivo, David Trezeguet, Giorgio Chiellini, Cristiano Zanetti and Momo Sissoko. Franco Semioli was suspended and replaced by former Juve midfielder Sergio Almiron. Both teams are in good shape after the Champions League preliminary round.

Fiorentina started with a bang, creating a chance for Alberto Gilardino in the opening 16 seconds! Soon after, Amauri nodded an Alessandro Del Piero cross over. Amauri did well to hook down a chipped Christian Poulsen pass over the defence, but Sebastien Frey did well to close him down.

Claudio Marchisio and Jorge Vargas fired over from distance, but Mario Alberto Santana drilled wide after an Olof Mellberg error. Del Piero only scuffed Mauro Camoranesi's cross, but there was chaos for Fiorentina when Vargas touched on a free kick for Almiron, who didn't notice and Juve nearly scored on the counter.

Frey needed two touches to smother a Del Piero effort, but the deadlock was broken on 39 minutes. It was a well-worked move and Zdenek Grygera got to the byline to roll back for the unmarked Pavel Nedved's tap-in from six yards. It was a great way to celebrate his 36th birthday on Saturday.

Fiorentina continued to give the ball away cheaply and nearly paid for it as Amauri scuffed his header wide. Del Piero had an even better opportunity on the stroke of half-time when sent clear on goal, but he hesitated and Frey stood his ground to block the angled drive.

Cesare Prandelli threw on teen talent Stevan Jovetic for Almiron for the second half. Fiorentina were pouring forward now and Gigi Buffon got a fist to Santana's cross just before Gilardino could head it in from six yards.

An Osvaldo glancing header was charged down in the box, then a chaotic move saw Osvaldo nod a Jovetic cross down and a deflection allowed Buffon to get a hand to it.

Juve were pinned back into their own half and Nicola Legrottaglie did well to clear before Gilardino could go one-on-one with Buffon. Giampaolo Pazzini replaced Osvaldo to give the Viola more power in the air.

Grygera pushed a Gilardino knock-down off the foot of Jovetic and Vargas smashed a free kick wide of the near post from the D. Del Piero curled his set-piece just past the upright.

Juve sign Barça starlet
Monday 1 September, 2008
Juventus have taken on a potential star of the future in young Barcelona midfielder Falque Silva Iago.

The 18-year-old is a regular face in Spain's Under-19 side but has been told that he is surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.

And Juve have stepped in to offer Iago a four-year contract after he passed his medical this morning.

“I am happy to join such a prestigious club as Juventus,” the starlet declared.

“The thought of being able to train alongside such great champions makes me enthusiastic and I can't wait to get going.

“I want to make myself useful and to show my potential and I am grateful to Claudio Ranieri [pictured] for his words of praise,” the Bianconeri new boy concluded.

Buffon laughs off £60m bid
Friday 5 September, 2008
Gianluigi Buffon has laughed off reports of a £60m offer from Manchester City, although he admits the “old Juventus” administration would’ve accepted.

The sudden influx of cash at Eastlands has prompted transfer rumours of a record-breaking sum to bring the World Cup winner to England.

“It is fantasy football and I always doubt talk of this kind of incredible bid. I really doubt anyone would offer £60m for me, as I am six years older than Kaka,” he grinned.

“I am happy to be the most expensive goalkeeper in the world thanks to my £32m move from Parma to Juventus.”

However, the shot-stopper conceded that in the days of Luciano Moggi and the ‘Triade’ who sold Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid for £46m, the situation might’ve been different.

“It is increasingly difficult to find symbols in modern football clubs and I don’t know if Juve would even let me go. The old administration would’ve done, but this time it’s different.

“I am aware that I’m an important player for the Bianconeri and am very proud of that fact.”

Buffon stuck with Juve during the Calciopoli scandal and went from World Cup winner to Serie B participant in just over a month.

“We are back to the highest level. Are Inter more of a threat with Ricardo Quaresma? They were dangerous even before he arrived, but we’re right up there.”

First the goalkeeper must begin the 2010 World Cup qualifiers as Italy take on Cyprus and Georgia with Marcello Lippi back at the helm.

“Lippi hasn’t changed a bit. We really want to confirm our status as world champions and are curious to test ourselves in this new adventure.

“It’s also great to have Fabio Cannavaro back, as we understand each other immediately. He is such an important player for the defence with his charisma.”

Ranieri: Money can't buy Buffon

Saturday 6 September, 2008
Claudio Ranieri warns Manchester City no amount of money can buy Gigi Buffon. “I told the same thing to Roman Abramovich.”

Transfer speculation went wild this week when the club’s new Abu Dhabi owners prepared a £60m offer for the Juventus goalkeeper.

“I am not worried, because you need more than money to buy all the champions in the world,” Ranieri told Tuttosport.

“I said the same thing to Abramovich when he had this view of the sport. In fact, over the years he has never been able to construct the dream team he wanted, even if obviously he put together some excellent squads.”

Ranieri was the first tactician in charge when Abramovich bought up Chelsea and began pumping millions into the club.

Buffon also laughed off the reports of a £60m bid from Manchester City, insisting he stuck with Juventus in Serie B and would not be tempted away by mere money.

Buffon "has no price-tag"
Sunday 7 September, 2008
Gianluigi Buffon is “not for sale at any price,” warns Juventus President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.

The sudden influx of cash at Manchester City has prompted transfer rumours including a £60m bid for Buffon and a £100m offer for Milan star Kaka.

“I am not interested what price we could get for Buffon, he’s not leaving Juve,” assured the patron on Sky Italia television.

“I am only interested in having him here with us, as a player, a person and a foundation block of this Juventus.”

The goalkeeper opted to stay with the Bianconeri even after their demotion to Serie B in the Calciopoli scandal just weeks after he lifted the World Cup.

Buffon also stated this week that it was “fantasy football” and he was not remotely interested in a switch to Manchester.

He was one of the heroes for Italy in last night’s 2-1 win away to Cyprus, performing several crucial saves.

“I am happy that Buffon contributed to the Nazionale’s victory with his great performance,” added Cobolli Gigli.

“We are simply not interested in any offers for him, just as we rejected all bids for David Trezeguet this summer.”

Serie A Week 2 - 14/9/08 (19.30 UK)
Juventus 1 - 0 Udinese
Amauri 66 (J)
Stadio Olimpico

Amauri's first Serie A goal for Juventus proved enough to defeat Udinese after hitting the woodwork twice.

Last season Antonio Di Natale gave the Friulani a surprise victory here and Udinese were in fine form again, topping the table after their 3-1 demolition of Palermo despite Dias Felipe and Cristian Zapata's injuries. Juve were kicking themselves when conceding a late equaliser against Fiorentina in Week 1, but welcomed back Momo Sissoko and David Trezeguet. Giorgio Chiellini returned a month ahead of schedule from a knee ligament strain.

This fixture last ended with a share of the spoils in 1998-99. Vincenzo Iaquinta hit the back of the net after three minutes, but it was correctly disallowed for an offside position from Pavel Nedved's through ball.

Iaquinta went close again as his shot took a deflection off a defender to loop up and Samir Handanovic fingertipped it out from under the bar.

On 16 minutes there was panic in the Udinese box. Amauri's smart header ricocheted off the upright into the path of Iaquinta, but Andrea Coda did just enough to clear inches before it crossed the line.

Amauri shook the side-netting with a solo effort and Handanovic palmed away a Nedved snapshot. Juve had penalty appeals rejected as Chiellini nodded on to Coda's arm, although replays suggest it was the shoulder anyway.

Another Iaquinta header from Mauro Camoranesi's cross skimmed the post, then Handanovic just about scrambled the ball off Amauri's foot from a couple of yards.

Udinese created some chances too, as on 40 minutes Olof Mellberg intercepted Di Natale's cross, but Zdenek Grygera may have lightly nudged Fabio Quagliarella in the back.

A fine counter-attack caught Camoranesi by surprise when he was clear on goal, but in stoppages Di Natale again set up Quagliarella for a header that Gigi Buffon plucked out from under the bar.

After the restart Simone Pepe's counter was deflected out for a corner, but Juve hit the woodwork for a second time as Christian Poulsen unleashed a sudden right-foot screamer from 20 metres that cracked against the crossbar!

Champions League, Gp H Matchday 1 - 17/9/08 (19.45 UK)
Juventus 1 - 0 Zenit
Del Piero 76 (J)
Stadio Olimpico, Turin

Juventus defeated Zenit 1-0 in Turin thanks to a sensational Alessandro Del Piero free kick.

The Bianconeri returned to the Champions League two years after the Calciopoli scandal and started out against the reigning UEFA and European Super Cup holders from Russia. Claudio Ranieri 'rewarded' those who got them here by fielding only one summer signing in the starting XI, Christian Poulsen, and sticking with the old guard. Giorgio Chiellini recovered from injury ahead of time to play in central defence.

Zenit had a great chance on 10 minutes, as Denisof headed a cross back across the face of goal for the totally unmarked Denny, who incredibly side-footed it wide from six yards!

David Trezeguet's glancing header from an Alessandro Del Piero cross drifted inches wide of the far post. Momo Sissoko had a powerful effort charged down by the defence and moments later Zdenek Grygera received huge cheers for a crucial tackle to stop a dangerous counter-attack.

Del Piero went on a slalom through the Zenit defence, dribbling between three inside the box before the fourth cleared the danger. It was some magnificent footwork from the veteran, who rolled the ball round with the underside of his foot.

Del Piero was wreaking havoc and earned a free kick a few metres in front of the corner flag. He curled it to the near post where Mauro Camoranesi's header cracked against the woodwork.

Unfortunately, Camoranesi picked up a right ankle injury and limped off to make way for Hasan Salihamidzic just half an hour into the match.

Grygera was again decisive as he cleared Pogrebnyak's cross when Gigi Buffon had been cut out. Grygera also went forward and his run was halted by a well-timed Puygrenier tackle in the box.

Trezeguet goes under the knife
Out at least three months

TURIN, 19 September 2008 - David Trezeguet will have to undergo surgery to fix the tendon problem in his right knee. The announcement was made on the Bianconeri's official website. The French striker has been struggling with the problem from the beginning of the season, and it flared up again at the end of the Champions League match on Wednesday against Zenit. "The decision" - announced Juventus - "was made following the latest tests undergone by the player and consultation with specialists. The timing and nature of the surgery will be announced at the beginning of next week."

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon believes the injury he suffered against Cagliari yesterday isn't anything to worry about.

The Old Lady continued their excellent start to the season with a 1-0 win at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

But the taste of victory was marred by fears that Azzurri No 1 Buffon could be sidelined after he was substituted at half-time.

“I felt a sensation like a pin prick when I kicked out for the ball,” Buffon explained.

“I asked to be substituted and I waited until half-time to come off. However, I don't think it is anything serious and I'll be out for a week at most.

“Having seen the saves that Alex Manninger made in the second period, I know that I can be calm about trusting him to take my place.”

Manninger had an excellent 45 minutes in Sardinia and pulled off a sensational save to deny Alessandro Matri in the last minute.

Serie A Week 5 - 27/9/08 (17.00 UK)
Sampdoria 0 - 0 Juventus
Stadio Ferraris

The woodwork denied Alessandro Del Piero, as Sampdoria string together a second straight draw with Sampdoria.

The Blucerchiati were still looking for their first win, while Claudio Ranieri's men had to recover from a surprise 1-1 draw with Catania on Wednesday night. Juve made the trip to Marassi without Nicola Legrottaglie, David Trezeguet, Cristiano Zanetti, Jonathan Zebina and Gianluigi Buffon. Last season this fixture ended in a spectacular 3-3 draw.

In the opening three minutes Antonio Mirante parried an Alessandro Del Piero free kick into the path of Christian Poulsen to balloon over from eight yards. At the other end an unlucky ricochet meant Antonio Cassano couldn't make the most of his chance from six yards.

A Gennaro Delvecchio dummy seemed to catch Emiliano Bonazzoli by surprise along with the Juventus defence. Paolo Sammarco's snapshot took a deflection to skim the near post

Champions League, Gp H Matchday 2 - 30/9/08 (19.45 UK)
BATE 2 - 2 Juventus
Kryvets 17 (B), Stasevich 23 (B), Iaquinta 29, 45 (J)
Dinamo stadium, Minsk

Vincenzo Iaquinta's brace completed a Juventus comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with BATE Borisov in Minsk.

The Bianconeri were eager to build on their Euro form after a 1-0 win over Zenit, but also to improve following two consecutive Serie A draws with Catania and Sampdoria. Goals have been difficult to come by with David Trezeguet out until January with knee tendon surgery and Amauri suffering from flu so he was only fit for the bench. Gianluigi Buffon and Christian Poulsen were also injured. This gave Sebastian Giovinco his chance to shine in a new right-midfield position.

BATE had the first real scoring opportunity after three minutes with Sergei Kryvets sent clear between the central defenders by an inspired through ball, but Mauro Camoranesi did brilliantly to close him down inside the box.

Added on October 10, 2008, 8:44 amJuventus are reportedly ready to table a January offer for Ivory Coast international Yaya Touré.

The 25-year-old is reportedly unhappy at Barcelona after a series of rows with Coach Josep Guardiola and could be keen for a fresh start.

Touré is a towering figure who plays a holding midfield role and could add much-needed substance in the middle of the park.

Juve are still searching for the answer to their midfield riddle and Danish powerhouse Christian Poulsen is yet to make his mark.

According to Tuttosport, Bianconeri sporting director Alessio Secco has approached Touré's agent with a five-year contract worth around £3m per year.

Director Jean-Claude Blanc has admitted that the Old Lady will consider returning to the market in the New Year after a disappointing start to the season, but much depends on how Juve perform before Christmas.

Ranieri's reign at Juventus allegedly will be over in few days to come. The Madrid match in CL's clash as them being the host surely given the heavy pressure for the Italian where two days earlier flying to Napoli against the home side may cost the fitness and mentality to bounce back in order to crawling top standings that has lost....yet Madrid clash could be the shock terror if the Del Piero + co already seemed to have run of gas to deliver and compete in this cup competition.

Serie A Week 7 - 18/10/08 (19.30 UK)
Napoli 2 - 1 Juventus
Amauri 61 (J), Hamsik 65 (N), Lavezzi 80 (N)
Stadio San Paolo

Claudio Ranieri is hanging by a thread after Ezequiel Lavezzi fought back for Napoli's 2-1 victory over Juventus amid some odd TinkerMan decisions. The Coach will be under fire for substituting Alessandro Del Piero, while Christian Poulsen picked up an injury that leaves him in doubt for Real Madrid.

Both sides have experienced Serie B recently and re-entered the European scene this season, but suffered their first defeats before the break for international duty. Claudio Ranieri was under the most pressure amid reports he would be fired and Juve needed to improve their record of a goal per game.

Serie A Week 8 - 25/10/08 (19.30 UK)
Juventus 1 - 0 Torino
Amauri 48 (J)
Stadio Olimpico

Amauri was again decisive as Juventus kick out their crisis with a 1-0 victory in the Derby Della Mole.

The Bianconeri emerged from their crisis with a 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid, but needed that boost in Serie A too after two straight defeats. Gianni De Biasi's job was on the line for a Toro side that had one point from five games and the Granata had not won the derby in 13 years.

Juve were without Gigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi, Cristiano Zanetti, Christian Poulsen, Claudio Marchisio and Jonathan Zebina, but Nicola Legrottaglie returned and Alex Del Piero started despite an upper thigh twinge in the warm-up. Toro missed Matteo Sereni, Eugenio Corini and the suspended Francesco Pratali, but Alessandro Rosina was back to support Rolando Bianchi.

Rosina had the first show from distance in the opening minute, then Momo Sissoko smacked a right-foot rocket across the face of goal. Sissoko had another attempt from 25 metres that Alex Calderoni punched out from under the bar. Sissoko went into the book for a sliding tackle after 19 minutes.

Juventus had a great chance, as Del Piero cut in from the right to roll back for Marco Marchionni, but both the initial shot and the follow-up were parried by Calderoni.

Ranieri ignores Roma crisis
Friday 31 October, 2008
Juventus Coach Claudio Ranieri does not believe Roma are in trouble despite losing their last three games in Serie A.

The Giallorossi are in sixteenth place, eight points behind the Bianconeri and have the worst defensive record in the League.

“I don’t believe Roma are in crisis,” said the Testaccio born Ranieri. “They also said that we were in crisis.”

Before notching up back-to-back victories, Juventus had not won in four matches and are still only ninth in the championship, five points off the lead.

“Roma did its reconstruction before us. A masterpiece has been made in three years despite the club being checked in the transfer market.

“Now is a period when things are going bad, as they went bad for us, but seeing that they have a great group and they are all still there, Roma will be a protagonist as always.”

The 57-year-old tactician also revealed that captain Alessandro Del Piero will return to action and praised the Bianconeri old guard for getting the team out of their recent difficulties.

“Their example is very important because they are players that have given a slice of their careers to Juventus and when they speak they have an important weight.

“I like when they speak as leaders because the club traces a line, the trainer follows it, but they are charismatic players that pull the others. They are the foundation of the new Juventus.”

Ranieri suggested that Juventus’ mind might be on other things, though, come Saturday night, namely Tuesday’s game with Real Madrid in the Champions League.

“We have to think about Real,” admitted Ranieri. “Because we are still in an emergency. We still cannot see the light. We are doing well, but we have to continue to do well.”

Juventus currently top Champions League Group H with three games to play. They are a point ahead of their nearest rivals, Real Madrid.

Serie A Week 10 - 1/11/08 (19.30 UK)
Juventus 2 - 0 Roma
Del Piero 38 (J), Marchionni 48 (J)
Stadio Olimpico

An Alessandro Del Piero jewel and Marco Marchionni strike gave Juventus a 2-0 win over crisis-hit Roma. It's their sixth defeat of the season and maintains their 100 per cent negative away record.

The Bianconeri came into this clash with confidence restored after a crisis, but the Giallorossi were still right in the thick of it, having lost more games than throughout all of last season. Their midweek fixture with Sampdoria was rained off, so they have a game in hand.

To make matters worse, Francesco Totti was injured, but Philippe Mexes returned from a three-match ban for insulting the referee and Julio Baptista recovered. Alex Del Piero was back, but the injury list still included Gigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Cristiano Zanetti and Claudio Marchisio.

Juve were aggressive from the start and Amauri just failed to get on the end of Del Piero's cross at full stretch. David Pizarro was booked for blocking a Christian Molinaro shot with his hands just outside the box, but Del Piero's free kick was charged down.

At the other end Rodrigo Taddei's smart pass to the unmarked Mirko Vucinic was intercepted at the last moment by Zdenek Grygera in a move sparked by Baptista. Moments later Taddei nodded a Daniele De Rossi cross over the bar.

Del Piero and Nedved combined passes several times for a sweeping move through the centre, but the captain was closed down in the area.

Roma went closer than ever on 20 minutes, as only the woodwork denied them. A low Christian Panucci cross from the right seemed to take everyone from surprise, including Baptista, so it ended its journey on the inside of the far post with Alex Manninger stranded.

Champions League, Gp H Matchday 4 - 5/11/08 (19.45 UK)
Real Madrid 0 - 2 Juventus

Del Piero 17, 67 (J)
Santiago Bernabeu

Alessandro Del Piero struck twice at the Bernabeu to defeat Real Madrid and qualify Juventus for the knockout round.

The 2-1 win in Turin revived a Juve side in crisis and they had been on a winning streak for the next fortnight, so confidence was high despite an injury list that included Gigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Christian Poulsen, Zdenek Grygera, Hasan Salihamidzic and Cristiano Zanetti. Tiago Mendes was given a rare chance to shine in midfield and Olof Mellberg moved to right-back. Ruud Van Nistelrooy was able to start for Real despite a fitness worry, but Arjen Robben pulled out during the warm-up to make way for Drenthe.

Alex Manninger comfortably collected a weak Guti effort, but he was far shakier on a swerving Wesley Sneijder cross. Real had penalty appeals for a Tiago handling offence, although it hit his arm only after ricocheting off the Madrid player's head.

Del Piero: What a moment!
Wednesday 5 November, 2008
Alessandro Del Piero admits “I could not be happier” after two goals put the Bernabeu at his feet.

“We won, played a great game, I scored two goals. Really, how can you get better than that?” grinned the Juventus captain.

He secured the 2-0 victory away to Real Madrid that mathematically qualifies Juve for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

“You live off nights like this and the unique emotion. I am happy the crowd gave me a standing ovation when I left the field.

“It was so great to score and this is a fantastic stadium, so it was a very important match for us. I must admit this is a positive time for me.”

Del Piero has scored four goals in as many Champions League games and three of them were against Real Madrid.

His low drive and free kick earned him a standing ovation at the Bernabeu when substituted in stoppages.

“It is the ultimate feeling in football. To score two goals and win in such a big game, then to be applauded by the opposing fans is a sign of recognition that goes beyond rivalry. It was wonderful.

“I learned from the best with free kicks and always studied, trained hard to get better at this skill.”

Iker Casillas did not set out the defensive wall very well and the Spaniard was left rooted to the spot by his free kick.

“I asked [Christian] Molinaro to extend the wall and decrease the vision the goalkeeper had. I aimed it at the near post and thankfully Casillas stayed there.”

Alex is in incredible form right now despite the fact he turns 34 on Sunday, so what is behind this remarkable consistency?

“My family keeps me grounded and happy, my teammates put their faith in me and physically I am fit. This is a moment when everything is going well. The desire to always improve and work hard is essential, too.

“Fatherhood has helped me and really revitalised my life, plus having confidence is crucial. If you are able to train regularly and focus on objectives to keep getting better, then you always feel fresh.”

Juve are in the knockout round of the Champions League, but this time two years ago were battling in Serie B after the Calciopoli scandal.

“I will never forget playing in Serie B, nor do I wish to. I experienced it wholeheartedly with a smile on my face, as I chose that path and knew we would get back into Serie A and the Champions League. I don't feel as if this is the end of an era, but rather it keeps going.”

am not trying to cause flames here, but i cant stop wondering how life can be so interesting..

after calciopoli several players left juve because they couldnt see themselves playing in 2nd tier of italian football..and some others stayed, like ADP and nedved..now 2++ years later, they faced a RM side, who have canna, one of the players who left juve earlier, on their ranks..and they defeat the RM team..i will be surely much more interesting if madrid still have emerson in their team smile.gif

Just shy of his 34th birthday, one Alessandro Del Piero quashed any suggestions that the curtains were coming down on his career with 2 superbly taken goals against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was 15 years ago that I gave him his first team debut after having signed him from Padova. In what seemed only like weeks, he flourished and was the mainstay of my team for seasons to come before retiring at the right old age of 36. It was the first installment of the Championship manager series. Who says it's unrealistic? tongue.gif

Sorry but I just had to. Left foot, right foot? Doesn't matter does it?

Happy Birthday Alex!
Sunday 9 November, 2008
Juventus have sent a very special message of congratulations to captain Alessandro Del Piero on his 34th birthday.

“On behalf of all of Juventus and the Bianconeri fans, I wish our captain many more extraordinary nights like the one he gave us in Madrid on Wednesday,” noted President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.

His brace defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in the Champions League, earning a standing ovation from the Bernabeu.

Del Piero will be celebrating his birthday in Verona this afternoon, where Juve have travelled to take on Chievo.

That’s not the only major milestone for the Italian international, as it will also be his 377th Serie A appearance in a Juventus shirt.

This puts him level with legend Gaetano Scirea in second place behind all-time record holder (and former club President) Giampiero Boniperti on 444.

Del Piero was born on November 9, 1974 in Conegliano, a small town near Treviso, and now lives in Turin with wife Sonia and one-year-old son Tobias.

His first club was Padova, but he joined Juve in 1993 and set numerous records. He is their all-time top scorer in all competition (246 goals) and in Europe (46 goals) with the most official appearances (564).

Since his Serie A debut in a 1-1 draw away to Foggia on September 12, 1993, Alex has won five Scudetti (plus two revoked under Calciopoli), a Serie B title, a Coppa Italia, four Italian Super Cups, the Champions League, European Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup and Intertoto Cup.

He has won the last two Capocannoniere titles back-to-back in Serie B and A as well as lifting the World Cup in 2006.

Absent Gigi's proud of Bianconeri
Monday 10 November, 2008
Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is pleased with the Old Lady's form in his absence. "I am replaceable."

Buffon has been out of action since the start of October, leaving Austrian international Alex Manninger to deputise.

However, the Bianconeri have dealt with the Azzurri ace's absence impeccably and have hauled themselves back into Scudetto contention in recent weeks as well as progressing in the Champions League.

“I will be back in the New Year and I want us to be second so that I can be the one to lead us to first,” Gigi joked.

“Seriously, six consecutive wins between Serie A and the Champions League have shown that Buffon is not indispensible for Juventus - that is a fact.

“Manninger is playing great and Antonio Chimenti could also overtake me in the pecking order.

“My teammates know how to react correctly to difficult moments, even though we all know you can't always win.

“We believe in the Scudetto and Alessandro Del Piero's recent performances have helped us to dream.

“We must believe in all our objectives while they are possible because we can achieve them all with the quality we have.”

Buffon Believes In Scudetto For Juventus
11/11/2008

Injured Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon believes that his side have a great opportunity to win this season’s championship.

The Bianconeri are the form side in Italy at present, having won four successive league games and six on the trot in all competitions.

They have been brilliant since overcoming the minor ‘crisis’ they endured earlier in the campaign, which saw them go five matches without a victory.

Even more astonishing is the fact that the club has achieved these great results without their number one goalkeeper, and arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, Gianluigi Buffon.

The injured shot-stopper is recovering from a back injury at present, and will be on the sidelines for another couple of months.

Despite not being able to participate, Buffon has declared that he is extremely excited and anxiously awaiting his return, as the side seem destined for great things this season.

“The performances recently of Del Piero in particular, has proven that our dream of winning the Scudetto is a real possibility,” said Buffon.

“We hope to do well in the Serie A and the Champions League and we are doing as much as we can in training to ensure that this be the case,” he added.

The Bianconeri will be hoping to make it five league victories in a row when they host Genoa at the Olimpico later in the week.

Sissoko To Face Suspension?
10/11/2008

The Italian press claims that the Sporting Justice could review video evidence and ban Juventus midfielder Mohamed Sissoko...

Juve's former Liverpool midfielder, Mohamed Sissoko, came face-to-face with Chievo defender Mario Yepes toward the end of the first half of the Old Lady's 2-0 victory on Sunday.

The Mali international was running at goal but was blocked by the Colombian defender and seemed to kick out at his legs.

However, the referee did not notice the incident and Sissoko was not even booked, hence it is possible that the Disciplinary Commision will look at TV pictures and perhaps hit the midfielder with a ban.

The gesture was by no means violent, but it could still fall under the category of unsporting behaviour, as it was an off-the-ball incident.

Former Milan goalkeeper Giovanni Galli alleged on Controcampo last night that Sissoko was lucky to escape without punishment, but former referee Paolo Casarin mused that Yepes did hit Sissoko with his arm and it remains to be seen what referee Luca Banti has written in his report.

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri opted to replace the midfielder in the second period, probably to avoid further tension on the pitch, as a scuffle ensued while the players walked back to the dressing room at half-time.

Should Sissoko receive a two-game suspension, he would sit out the grudge match with Inter on November 23.

From Goal.com

Hopefully Momo will not be banned! The game with Inter is important! And Momo have been in good form so far! We will beat Inter like what we did last season!! Forza Juve!

Tiago Not Leaving
11/11/2008

Juventus midfielder Tiago looks set to remain in Turin until next June, according to Tuttosport.

Despite speculation suggesting that a January move could be imminent for Juventus midfielder Tiago, it appears now that he will be staying with the Old Lady, at least until next summer.

The Portuguese joined the Serie A giants from Ligue 1 side Lyon last year, but failed miserably in his first season at the Stadio Olimpico, when he spent most of his time warming the bench.

However, he seems reborn in recent weeks and has gained the trust of coach Claudio Ranieri, who has been regularly handing him the reins in  midfield of late.

The former Chelsea man had a positive performance in the Champions League game with Real Madrid last week and also showed promising signs in last Sunday’s away win to Chievo Verona.

The 27-year-old had stated his desire to leave Piemonte last month, due to the rarity of his first-team appearances.

But his recent revival has not gone unnoticed and his performances have clearly pleased the entire Bianconeri environment, from the directors to the fans.

Tuttosport claims that Juve will definitely keep hold of the midfielder until at least next summer, before sorting out his future.

Tiago rejected several European clubs this summer, including Atletico Madrid and Porto, and was also linked with French side Monaco yesterday.

But the midfield injury crisis which has affected Juve this term, with Cristiano Zanetti and Christian Poulsen currently out, will probably convince sporting director Alessio Secco to hold on to the want-away midfielder for the time being.

From Goal.com

No news from monaco yet it think. Tiago will remain till next summer. Actually i think he did not bad in last couple of matches. He seems to be forming a great partnership with Momo Sissoko.

Sissoko's sigh of relief

Tuesday 11 November, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus midfielder Momo Sissoko has avoided disciplinary action for kicking out at Chievo defender Mario Yepes.

The Bianconeri conquered Chievo 2-0 last weekend, but Sissoko was an anxious man as he left Verona.

The Mali international tussled with Colombian ace Yepes just before half-time and aimed a kick off the ball, which was missed by the referee.

The media had suggested that Sissoko could be handed a two-game ban if video evidence was reviewed, which would have ruled him out of the Derby d'Italia against Inter on November 23.

However, it has been confirmed today that Sissoko faces no action and will be free to feature in Thursday's Week 12 encounter with Genoa.

Not Easy For Youngsters At Juve - Palladino
11/11/2008

Juventus-owned Genoa striker Raffaele Palladino talked about Thursday night's match against his former side and complained about the lack of chances being given to young players by the Turin giants.

It will be a special night on Thursday for Genoa striker Raffaele Palladino, who will come up against Juventus, who were part of his past, but also could play a big role in his future. Last summer he was loaned out to the Grifoni, where he hasn't quite managed to set the world alight just yet, scoring only once in eight appearances so far.

"It will not be a match like the others for me," he admitted, "it would be hypocritical to say the contrary. But, although I don't need to say this, I only think about Genoa, where I am doing great. We should not fear anyone or anything, we will enter the pitch with the same mentality as always. We'll have to wait and strike at the right moment, we cannot make mistakes."

The 24-year-old also took the opportunity to hint at the difficulties of being a young player at Juventus.

"Juve are going through a great moment of form, look at [captain Alessandro] Del Piero: he's infallible on free kicks, a true captain, with whom I have a very good relationship, we frequently talk on the phone.

"Juve's strength is mainly in the old guard, for youngsters it's not easy to come through," Palladino concluded.

From Goal.com

I guess its quite true, my opinion is its due to the expectation of a Grande Juve is too high. When a youngster were given chances but come out with mediocre performance. Fans and Media will starts to question the ability of these players and ended up being off loaded to another club. But I do like Palla and Criscito, I do think they have a future with Juve! Too bad Genoa will lose the match to an in form Juve. biggrin.gif

To be frank, I think we don't need another striker. An attacking midfielder is what we need! Better if its Diego! or Joaquin? But we've got The Atomic Ant on the wing.

Giovinco To Go Out On Loan?
12/11/2008

Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco may go out on loan in January, according to Tuttosport...

The Italian under-21 international has not seen much action this term with coach Claudio Ranieri seemingly forgetting about the talent he has at his disposal.

Ranieri has preferred to use Paolo De Ceglie and Marco Marchionni rather than the youngster, leading to speculation the attacking midfielder is on his way out.

Tuttosport claims Sampdoria, Genoa and Palermo are all on standby and ready to pounce during the January transfer window.

A move on-loan could suit La Formica Atomica as he would be getting regular football under his belt which, in turn, would benefit everyone involved in the deal.

There is no chance Giovinco will leave permanently as he signed an extension until 2013; the 21-year-old has been looked at by many major clubs around Europe, including Arsenal.

However, if he does move, he is likely to remain in Serie A. Turin-based Tuttosport have always claimed Giovinco would move, but his agents and the player himself made it clear and stated his ambition to remain on many occasions.

From Goal.com

Hmmmm...I think Seba deserve some playing time. May be in Serie A or Tim Cup replacing Pavel. The problem is Ranieri is more interested with utilising the old guards. Seba have already proves himself with Empoli in Serie Last Season and scored some wonderful goals. Still remembers when he scored against Giallorossi in the last minute that earn Empoli a 2-2 draw! I guess its time for The Atomic Ant!! thumbup.gif

Del Piero Dreams Of 2010
13/11/2008

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero is in career-best form, and he has once again reiterated his desire to play at the 2010 World Cup.

Alessandro Del Piero and his Juventus side are in incredible form at present, as they have won six consecutive matches in all competitions, and are looking miles ahead of the team that failed to win in five successive outings just over a month ago.

The Bianconeri will be hoping to make it seven victories on the trot later tonight when they entertain Genoa at the Olimpico in Torino.

Many believe that Del Piero's return to his very best has contributed to Juventus' own ascendancy. And when questioned about his recent good form, Pinturicchio responded by making mention of his one last dream at international level – the 2010 World Cup.

"The 2010 World Cup would be the icing on the cake of my career," he said.

"It is still far away though, so for now I just have to focus on my performances for Juve."

Alex had one final comment on the championship, by humorously claiming that, "someone said that too many eulogies were bad, although we’ve received many lately, so I’m not so sure if this is true.

"Against Genoa we will see if we have done good or evil, we must be careful though, because we face one of the most in form sides in the league."

Play gets underway in Turin at 2030 CET later tonight. A win for the Bianconeri will see them skyrocket to the top of the table, whilst a win for the visitors will send them into the top four.

Buffon: I Became Depressed And Sad With Football

Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has sensationally revealed that he became depressed and was unhappy in his career, and life in general, during the 2003/04 season, when the Bianconeri lost the Champions League final...

Arguably one of the world's best shot-stoppers, Buffon has been out injured recently but he is slowly making a steady return to action.

The Juve man has released his autobiography "Numero 1" wherein he talks about his rise in the game.

The Massa-Carrara-born player revealed there was a spell in his life five years ago where he became depressed and thought about quitting the game.

La Stampa have published an extract from the book and it reads: "I fell in depression and I had to be cured by a psychologist.

"Fame and money? There were thousands of reasons. This then becomes the norm. Maybe one realises he couldn't find the right woman or you don't win the Champions League.

"I went away for two months to receive treatment and to cure the depression.

"Every time you miss a save then this thing seems to recall you but you can't go away every three months to cure it.

"I don't have any regrets at all. I arrived in football when I was just 17. If I said I was satisfied I would be a fool but I don't feel anything was ever my fault.

"Maybe my youth as I would have liked to have lived in the ways I wanted."

Juventus welcome Genoa to the Stadio Olimpico later tonight but Buffon will not be involved in the action.

Many will remember Juve losing out to Milan in the 2003 Champions League final on penalties where the goalkeeper was in between the sticks.

From Goal.com

I am also very sad when we lost to Milan at Manchester but I continue loving Juventus! Come on Gigi! Please dont quit this game yet! At least bring another Champions League and a few more scudettos before you quit! Grazie Gigi! Forza Buffon! icon_rolleyes.gif

Real's £42m Amauri bid rejected
Saturday 15 November, 2008
Juventus have reportedly turned down a £42.6m offer for Amauri from Champions League rivals Real Madrid.

The Spaniards are seeking a new striker after a knee ligament injury ruled Ruud Van Nistelrooy out of action for the rest of the season.

Impressed by his form for Juve since moving from Palermo in the summer, which includes the winning goal against Real in Turin, President Ramon Calderon is said to have made a huge bid for the player.

According to Tuttosport newspaper, the Bianconeri rejected a £42.6m offer for Amauri – more than double what they paid for him in May.

He had already been of interest to Real and Milan in the summer, but opted for Juventus instead.

Now Real Madrid are hunting elsewhere for their replacement striker and one of the likely candidates is also a Serie A star.

Hernan Crespo is not only an experienced Argentine who Inter would be happy to release as he rarely features even on the bench, but he is also available for the Champions League.

Crespo’s name was not on the list for the European competition and so he is not cup-tied, making him a more valuable proposition right now than Manchester United’s Carlos Tevez.

Manninger: I Know How To Stop Inter
17/11/2008

Austrian goalkeeper Alex Manninger believes Juventus have what it takes to defeat Inter next weekend...

Former Arsenal 'keeper Manninger, who is deputising between the sticks in Gianluigi Buffon’s absence, saved a crucial Marco Materazzi spot-kick while playing for Siena last season, forcing the Beneamata to postpone their Scudetto celebrations.

Now, the confident goalie wants to halt Inter's progress once more.

“We are in great form and aim to win in Milan,” the 31-year-old is quoted as saying in Tuttosport.

“But this time around I won’t need to save any penalties, as our back-line is strong and compact and we will not give them that kind of advantage.

“Anyway, I will talk to the coach when we will resume training and I will tell him all the secrets to stopping them,” joked the Austria international.

The Corso Galileo Ferraris outfit have a great chance to draw level on points with José Mourinho’s side if they win at the Scala del Calcio in Saturday night’s ‘Anticipo’.

“It is obvious that the clash with Inter is very important,” Manninger continued, “But we cannot forget that it’s only worth three points, just like all the other games this season.

“Nonetheless, we want to achieve a prestigious result in order to keep our momentum going.”

CL: England v Italy in last 16!

QUOTE
It's England v Italy in the Champions League last 16 as Juventus draw Chelsea, Roma get Arsenal and Inter meet Manchester United.

Juventus conquered Real Madrid to win Group H, but were harshly treated as they drew the West London giants, who Ranieri led between 2000 and 2004.

Roma, who beat Chelsea to win Group A, have also been paired with London giants in Arsenal.

But arguably the pick of the round sees Jose Mourinho's Inter take on European champions Manchester United.

Inter were left to rue finishing second in their group after a costly defeat against Werder Bremen, but the Special One had claimed that he wanted an English tie.

The first legs will be played on February 24 and 25 with return matches on March 10 and 11.

Last 16 draw:
Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v Roma
Inter v Manchester United

ranieri will face his old club ..

30 December 2008

Del Piero and Chiellini nominated for UEFA Top 11

With the year drawing to a close, the initiatives to award the best players of the last 11 months are on the increase. Even the UEFA official website has launched a voting system for the award of Team of the Year 2008.

60 candidates have been nominated from amongst which will be chosen the best 11 players and the best coach. Amongst these are the names of two Juventus players who left their mark both in the national championship and in Europe: Alessandro Del Piero and Giorgio Chiellini.

Del Piero will be competing for one of the places in the attack. The captain was amongst the protagonists of the first part of the Champions League 2008/09 and with four goals scored (apart from the one in the preliminaries) is in the top scorer list. One of his goals, the one scored at the Olimpico against Real Madrid has been classified amongst the 10 most beautiful goals.

Great exploit by Chiellini. After a great European championship during which he was one of the best players of the unlucky azzurri squad, the player from Livorno confirmed himself as being a pillar in the defence even during the first matches of the Champions League, even scoring a goal in the first leg against Artmedia Bratislava. Giorgio is a candidate for one of the positions of central defender.

The Team of the Year will be chosen by the supporters, who can vote on-line on www.uefa.com up to the 12th of January 2009.

Pelé named Del Piero in the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers selected by Pelé as a part of FIFA's centenary celebrations while Brazilian star Ronaldinho proclaimed that Del Piero is his idol. Del Piero was also voted in the list of best European players for the past 50 years in the UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll. In the year 2000, Del Piero was the world's best-paid football player from salary, bonuses and advertising revenue. Currently, Del Piero is still the highest earning Italian Player.

Along with three awards in Italy for gentlemanly conduct he has also won the Golden Foot award, which pertains to personality and playing ability.

Comparing Juve with Malaysian National Team? WTH? Lion? There are not even a Tiger Cub!

I totally gave up on Malaysian football after the last Asian Cup where I saw them thrashed! Just a bunch of idiot/rubbish on the pitch..hope that can be cleared, the sooner the better. Saw how they lost to Vietnam in AFF Suzuki cup? hahaha, its like school boy playing the game!

I even gave away my M'sia vs Chelsea game ticket that I won, coz who is playing against Chelsea? whats the point?

To make it better again? Lets give others a chance!! I hope u know what I mean!

Juve target French stopper Wednesday 7 January, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The French Press are linking Juventus with PSG central defender Mamadou Sakho.

The Bianconeri aren't expected to spend heavily during the January transfer window, but they could make some small additions to the squad.

According to L'Equipe, the latest name on the Old Lady's radar is that of 19-year-old stopper Sakho, who can play in central defence or as a left-back.

Sakho has 18 months left on his current deal with PSG, where he became the club's youngest ever captain at the age of 17, but is stalling over a contract renewal in the French capital.

Juve scouts have been spotted watching the former France Under-17 captain but the Turin giants may face competition from Arsenal and Newcastle.

From Channel4.com

Not necessary to get this player is he is too pricey. We can give more chance to Criscito! Come back and play for us when you are ready!

Added on January 10, 2009, 8:05 pmThe 1st match for Juve in 2009 is against Siena. Hopefully we can have a very comfortable win! Forza Juventus.

Too bad we didn't cut Inter's lead to a single point! Damn! Not a totally good match for us. We didnt played well in the first 20 minutes and luckily got back into the match with a fine Mellbery header!

And I was so supprised that Lorenzo Ariaudo (I met him when he was here with Juve's Primavera Squadra for CYC two years ago) started such important match. And the made a wonderful tackle to stop Pandev from scoring. Grande Ariaudo!

Look at the bright side! We will beat them in Stadio Olimpico Turin and take away their scudetto! This will be the best gift we can give Mr. Massimo Moratti! Haha!

Four Players To Miss Saturday Match

Juventus-Fiorentina, the first match of the second round of the Serie A, will be off-limits for no less the four players after the latter were suspended by the sporting authorities: two bianconeri and two viola.

Claudio Ranieri will have to do without Cristian Molinaro and Momo Sissoko. Both players had reached their yellow card limit and were suspended after the one received against Lazio. The Mali player already had to miss the match in the first round due to a pending suspension from the previous season. On the other hand Grygera will be back. The only player to have reached the yellow card limit is Camoranesi.

Comotto and Osvaldo will be suspended for Fiorentina. The ex-Torino defender was suspended after the yellow card received against Milan while the attacker is in his second day of suspension after the red card received during the match against Lecce.

Juve coach Ranieri slams "childish " Trezeguet

March 13, 2009

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri has lashed out at David Trezeguet, likening him to a "spoilt child" after the striker complained about being substituted during the Bianconeri's Champions League exit to Chelsea.

Trezeguet criticised Ranieri's tactics and insisted he should have remained on the pitch when speaking after Tuesday's match, which saw him replaced by Amauri 11 minutes from time.

Ranieri has lambasted the 31-year-old, who only returned to action last month following a lengthy lay-off.

"I feel a bit betrayed by Trezeguet," said Ranieri. "It was an inexplicable outburst, from a spoilt child, his words made me very angry.

"They are things you say in the dressing room, he might also be right, but at that point it was as if we had nine men against Chelsea because he had touched the ball six times in the second half and few times in the first.

"So I tried to put Amauri on so that he could run with the others and play."

Ranieri added: "We haven't talked to each other, we're doing it via the newspapers, seeing as that's what he's doing...

"I hoped that he would have gained confidence after his goal against Palermo and four months on the sidelines: I was giving him playing time and trust. I have always had the utmost respect for him.

"It's obviously not the same on his part towards me."

Trezeguet has been left out of the Bianconeri squad for tomorrow's match against Bologna with a muscle strain.

Amauri will also be absent after injuring a muscle in his thigh which is set to sideline him for at least a month.

Giovinco-Cassano swap suggested
QUOTE
Juventus are reportedly planning a summer assault for Sampdoria star Antonio Cassano and could even offer co-ownership of Sebastian Giovinco.

The Bianconeri have made no secret of their admiration for former Real Madrid man Cassano.

However, Doria sporting director Beppe Marotta has ruled out any transfer involving the Bari native.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Juve may try and use rising star Giovinco as bait by offering co-ownership of the 'Atomic Ant' as well as £12m.

There are reports that the two clubs conducted preliminary negotiations last month and that Samp are willing to consider the deal.

While the Bianconeri are clearly determined to lure Cassano, it remains to be seen whether they would be willing to loosen their grip on Giovinco, who is widely regarded as a key man in the club's future.sos..

1-4 wins againts Roma was very good result. Iaquinta shows good form now, a sure headache for Ranieri if all strikers are fit.

Great to win such a important game. That the only way to secure our 2nd place and hopefully we can close our point gap with Inter.

Giovinco a born leader

If on Saturday it was Lorenzo Ariaudo who brought Casiraghi’s Under 21 squad back on track, on Tuesday it was the turn of Sebastian Giovinco to score for Italy and equalize against Holland.

The Atomic Ant played a great match and even went close to scoring a second time. The Orange were the first to score with De Jong but Seba equalized at the end of the first half fixing the score on a 1-1 draw which is a very important result for the azzurrini.

Giovinco had a very good match and was clearly the inspiration of the team coached by Pierluigi Casiraghi. Claudio Marchisio also had a good match expressing himself with the skills of a veteran notwithstanding his young age but this is nothing new as the young midfielder has already become an important point of reference in Ranieri’s squad.

I am really looking forward to Diego's official confirmation as a Juve player... He will provide the much much needed creativity in team. Hope there will be no sudden complication in the deal, if not all the fans will definitely call for Secco's head!

well although diego is a highly rate player (and i like his play style as a playmaker.. after seeing him in action a few times with his trick and treats) i still have doubts on where he would fit on the juventus team. currently juv will be lacking on the left side of mid with the void left with the departure of the pavel. i think thats one hole juv should be trying to cover. dont get me wrong tho about diego but i still think sissoko/zanneti(getting old too but good for experience) and marchisio would be great given the time to nurture them. and yes to me right now... spend money on the right manager is vital.
oh bfore i get shot, not too sure if giovinco is good on the left mid tho time will only tell with the right guidance which in the end means a good manager is in order.

lol cool down rookie. though im not sure diego is a direct replacement of pavel. characteristic of both players are diff. pavel is always on the go pressuring and running none stop. but diego is more a finesse player. elegant passes, teasing dribbles and such. but i hope he settles down in juv well.

Good purchase, looking forward to see Diego in action. I'm a big fan of Diego. I hope he can keep 100% fit all season long in Italian League, which more harder than Bundes Liga.
