to the guy going kyoto, u should try the green tea ice cream near the national theatre/kabuki or sth like tht at karasuma. omiyage is the standard stuff, just different shapes, the traingle mochi thingy seems popular(cant remember name)
you mean otabe? triangle with red bean paste inside? i think i've tried it somewhere before. didn't know it was famous in kyoto tongue.gif

anyway, today's Fuji-san:

if you love pocari sweat or other sports drinks, you can buy the powder form and just add water. usually 1 packet is less than 100yen and can make 1 litre of drink. if you dont mind the diluted taste, you can top up to 1.5 litre bottle

if you're in the kyoto area and you're interested in manga, you can visit the international manga museum:
http://www.kyotomm.com/english/index.html

inside there's shelves full of manga that you can read (if you can read japanese smile.gif but mostly old titles. there's some samples of manga translated into other languages too, but no bm version. there's a small gift shop selling some manga/anime related goods.

doesnt look cheap for me. gyuudon is cheaper. 350yen can get already. if reeeaaally budget just buy 2 or 3 onigiri at konbini.

but i love ten-don as well. the ones they sell in supermarket are slightly cheaper than in the proper shops

let me share what i cook here in japan:

yakisoba:
3 packs of noodles + perencah = ~200yen
fry whatever you want to add into your yakisoba (meat, prawn, vege, tauge), then add noodles and perencah. add fried egg on top if you want

kitsune udon:
5 packs of frozen udon noodles = ~300yen
for the soup you need dashi (like fish stock granules), kicap, mirin (cooking wine), gula secukup rasa. feel free to add whatever toppings you want (spinach leaves, karaage, tenpura, egg etc)

tenzaru soba:
dried soba noodles = 4 portions for ~200yen
dipping sauce = ~200yen for small bottle
boil soba noodles, put some shredded leek or spring onion into dipping sauce.
how to eat: take some soba noodles, dip in sauce and sluuuurp noodles. best served with prawn or vege tenpura (~100yen per piece at supermarket)

instant noodles:
100-300yen per packet. my personal favourite is nong shim korean noodles, 98yen per bungkus. superior to maggi kari, trust me.

miso soup:
miso paste = depends, but cheapest is 100yen for a packet. can last a looong time.
boil water, add dashi, miso paste and whatever extra you like (vege, tofu, wakame)

grilled saba (mackarel fish):
fresh or frozen saba = 100-200yen a piece.
sprinkle salt on fish, put in grill (most japanese stove have built-in grill)

buy from yakitori shop or convenient store cheaper?
*
buy in supermarket cheaper. sixpack is ~1000yen.
there's also something called happoshu, it looks like beer, smells like beer, tastes like beer, but not technically beer. its cheaper though.
only yesterday i went to yakitori bar. didnt look at the beer prices, just order only lol
