I have problem playing Master & Commander BD, US pressing. There's a very loud distortion sound around 17.25 minutes. The spike is only for a second. Checked with my friend, even changed new BD. He didn't experience any problem. I think the culprit is my BD60. Other than that I have no regret. DVD upscaling is topnotch. Even better than pioneer DV410 & rxv3800. All my R1 & R3 dvds are playable. I thought only R3 DVD are playable because I can only see R3 logo on the box.

Before I upgrade the firmware, anybody have similar problem with Master & Commander? Can the new firmware affect the BDP playability with DVD?

So far I have tried the following legacy DVD:
R1 Star Wars II Attack of the Clones, DD EX
R1 LOTR trilogy extended version, DTS-ES

no problem for BD60. I was surprised that I'm able to send bitstream signal thru HDMI to my AVR. BD60 audio setup all bitstream and didn't use any co-ax. So what actually happened?

anybody have tried Master & Commander: US BD with BD60?

What's your AVR bro. There was an issue of popping sound with DTS-HD MA for Yamaha & Onkyo (maybe other brands too, can't remember) onboard DTS chip. But this has been resolved with a firmware upgrade. Don't know about another brands but for Onkyo 875 make sure you have version 1.7.

Yamaha rxv3800. Sorry I don't get you. Meaning I have to upgrade my yammy's firmware or the BDP's? I'll try to upgrade my BD60 firmware this weekend. Thx for the pointer on the popping issue. I won't call it a pop though. At -20dB, it's more like an explosion!

Just found out some earlier 3800s have problem when playing back some DTS-MA BD. It's also known as DTS-MA pop or bomb, depending on the volume level at the time of playback.

I mean WTH man, DTS bomb! damn, that's even scarier than Nordin Mat Top. shocking.gif

Confirmed, region free for DVD.

My opinion on DVD upscale quality at 720P/1080i ....  Its BAD. I read eviews that the BD60 DVD upscale is 'Amazing' , 'Excellent', and so on, but what I found was the Opposite.

My 3 year old Sony DVD 720P upscaler is so much sharper and cleaner and also with better colour production than  the BD60.

Can't comment on 1080P upscale Quality though because I don't have a 1080P TV.

As for Blu-ray quality it's as expected of a  Blu-ray player.

One last thing, don't play those movies on 25GB Blu-ray (BD-R) which are on sale now. Out of curiousity I tried 4 of them and 2 couldn't play on this player. The PS3 Display set at one shop I tried (don't know how many months they have used it already) could play all 4 biggrin.gif

Sorry, Back to blu-ray player..

I thought by default, BD60 upscales to 1080p. I wasn't aware it can upscale to 'only' 720p/1080i. Like I said before, I'm surprised that it can play R1 DVD. So my guess is that local BD60s are region free. Unfortunately I don't have any R2 DVD to test.

Now the PQ depends on the source itself.

From my own experience, few titles can net good result like R1 Star Wars II, R1 LOTR trilogy extd version, R1 Private ryan, R3 Band of Brothers, R1 Magnolia & R3 Monster Inc. But others like R1 Aliens, R3 The Matrix, R1 Braveheart and R1 Last of the Mohicans didn't quite cut it. The last of the Mohicans is the worst. Those two black bars on the right & left are just dem annoying.

I am pretty sure that the BD60 shd upscale to 1080p. Pls check your settings. Also the BD60 shd be able to extract 24fps from a NTSC disc.

BD60 can upscale to 1080P using HDMI. If you use component then highest is 1080i.

Yes correct. I've checked my setting, the upscaling is set to auto. In auto mode it will output the best resolution which can be supported by the display panel. I'm using HDMI & my tv is 1080p capable, hence all my video signals were upscaled to 1080p by default.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Ngto tested at 720p/1080i only and I understand his tv's limitation. All I'm saying is that it's not a fair test for BD60 true capability.
