haha, those white ones mean they just shed their skins, so it's white. the darker ones are the ones that are going to shed. If i'm not mistaken.  icon_rolleyes.gif

oh and if they just shed their skin, means it's easier for your hamster to digest as the exoskeleton is softer.  laugh.gif
*
Yup I think so too~!

hmm.gif Roche particularly likes mealies that just pupate, still soft and white but already a pupa.

blush.gif My mealies with me for 3 weeks jor, RM 1 still not finish. Almost everyday now will find mealies that just pupate.

i have another question, can i feed them(mealworms) bread?

if i do, will it give any harm to hammies?
*
hmm.gif Well... The idea is, whatever you feed them go to your hammies. Based on that, the question is, do you want to feed a lot of bread to your hammies?

If feed the hammie mealworms everyday, it won't get obese ? Or not healthy ?

I mean if fed on daily basis...
*
Won't la. Make sure you don't feed too many. Limit syrians to about 4 or 5.

I feed on a daily basis. 4 each for both my syrians.

ehh... i don't get what you mean.. but i feed mealworms with gardenia bread, looks nutritious to human...  blink.gif
*
But the human not eating mealies ma.

What I mean is, your hamsters will get the nutrient of the things your mealies eat. In other words, if your mealies eat fruit and vege, your hamster will get the nutrient of fruit and vege from eating the mealies.

Understand?

Oh i see, then you still give your hammie staple food ?
Then will their poo become more smelly compare to being fed with normal staple food ?
*
Of course staple food must give. Their dry food, smoothie, everyday is a must. Mealies is extra protein.

No smelly la. Same as usual lor.

Yah, sometimes the info from the Net can be a bit off.... so that is why we gotta do some experimental keeping. Like in most caresheets, they would say cages are the best because of the ventilation. I would say the best is having a tank coz that would stop the hamster from chewing the metal bars.... about fresh food, in books and on some caresheets, they mention not to feed everyday because it would lead to wet tail. But from Nezu's own research and experimental feedings, it is better to give fresh food everyday.

Hahaha... girls.... maybe coz guys more into other things? Maybe coz too much reading hahah... dunno lah. I'm the only one who likes hamsters among my siblings. I got 2 brothers mah.

Best is to get to know a breeder who has knowledge from experience and also from reading. I'm doing that for sugar gliders, so that is why I have a blog on glider keeping. Suitable keeping for Malaysians heheheh....

QUOTE(kmao @ Jun 29 2008, 01:57 PM)
is there no cure for wet tail? wet tail causes by diarrhea right?
*
Wet Tail is a fatal disease. Even if you bring it to a vet, the chances it will survive is just 50%. Hammies suffering this disease can die in about 48 hours or less.

Wet tail disease can be transmitted from 1 hammie to the other, so you must be careful when you buy a hamster. If you see one hamster in the place you buy have wet tail, most likely all of them are already infected. The bacteria causing this can even be transferred to your other pets if you are not careful. But it can't be transmitted to humans.

if your hamster has wet tail, it will look like the tail is covered by brown liquid. They also may refuse to eat and then sleep all the time. Also will have severe diarrhea. Those very serious case maybe will have breathing problems.

The only thing we can do is early detection, and hurry to bring it to a vet. Then pray and hope it can get better.

*
Of course not. If can then early early also got people try and make it a new breed already. Plus the babies or the babies sired by that batch of babies will be sterile. No point.

BTW, I am glad to announce that Ferrero is a MALE!!!! Can see his testicles. rclxm9.gif

So Hun was right. Hehe...

how old is he? so fast can see testicles already?
*
It's been about 3 weeks that I brought him home. I think he was one month plus when I brough him back. Since I bought him when we all one gang went hammie hunting, Hun mentioned that Ferro was male. biggrin.gif But she like not sure like that. Cuz his underparts were very furry.

One weeks later Nezu delivered smoothie to my place and help me check his sex. She say he is female. Cuz "he got no ball ball" as she put it.

Then she say MAYBE his testicles will show after he gain some weight. So Ferro remained an unsure gender till today. sweat.gif Sometimes I dunno wanna refer to Ferro as he or she. Me myself also confuse dy.

Then today my sister handle Ferro and Roche. Then at eye level, I saw his testicles. Not big at all since it's not noticeable unless I look at eye level. Then can see 2 "bump" which Roche didn't have.

rclxms.gif So I completed my dream and have 1 male and 1 female syrian. But I have no intentions of breeding them. Just for the experience.

wink.gif So don't have to look for hamsters anymore after this. Syrian experience complete.

Where got sell alot of roborowsky hamster ? i want alot of choices one as in the shop has lot of stock so i can choose really cute one...btw, what u guys think if i plan to only get 1 roborowsky and not a pair cz i wanna put in my room and if 2 then my room will be smelly...and if i buy a square aquarium to rare them will it be too cruel ? i have cages but its almost the size of the square aquarium i wanna buy cz the size of my room is limited and i dont want my mom to nag me to put the hamster in my room...wat u guys think...
*
smile.gif I suggest you look for breeders. Though you can choose many robos in certain shops, but is that really what you want? From my experience of buying robos from petshops, the robos are almost always NOT TAME, with the exception of 2. And I bought many robos before. I use to study and breed them till a few months ago when the last of them passed away. I didn't wanna shrink the gene pool. Unless you just want to look at them and never touch them.

I suggest you get a pair. I had a couple of hamsters who actually refused to eat and was very frightened all the time when their tank mates died. smile.gif Since they're the smallest of the dwarf hamsters, I think adding one more won't hurt.

How small is small? I hope not smaller than 1ft cuz I think that's the VERY minimum. All my robos had at least 1.5ft tanks to themselves (a pair). I think a square aquarium will be ok as long as you provide them an adequate hide house and wheel. They do need to exercise and if you really don't have a choice, go ahead. But a bigger space is better cuz robos love to run and explore, reshape the landscape. They still fare well i small cages due to their size and if you feed them well but they'll be happier in a larger cage.

I am pleased to say that robos do not smell, almost scentless. Their shavings need not be changed often, depending on the size of their enclosure. My 1.5ft tanks don't smell after 3 weeks. It still smells like clean bedding.

wink.gif Just a tip. Robos simply love bathing sand. I've seen all of mine roll in it and they won't groom themselves anywhere else. Hope it helps.

if u hv own transport then easy. if not. then trouble loh.
*
I agree. And never never EVER transport your hamsters in a box.

When I bought Roche, Chris put her in a box for me. On the way back we stopped at 1 utama for just 10 minutes cuz I needed to get something. We left her in the car for 10 minutes only. I was hurrying a lot cuz I don wanna leave her in the car herself. She was in a box on the front seat next to the driver's seat.

When we came back to the car, I saw her sitting on the top of the cushion seat at the back, looking out the widow and relaxing. Walau, gives the feel of christopher colombus setting his first sight on America. sweat.gif She didn't enjoy us catching her back and putting her back in the box. The hole she chewed was only half the size of her body and she still managed to get out.

On the way back, I have to play "cover the hamster " cuz she got frustrated I won't let her out of the hole she chewed. Then created a few more holes.

@Neshie: Yah, yesterday saw. tongue.gif But quite small. Not manly yet. Hehe...

err the one plastic small aquarium container.
*
If you're planning to kkeep a syrian I think that's definitely not big enough. The very minimum space is a place where you can fit a suitable sized wheel, a bowl and a bottle. And still have a bit of space for it to walk.

blush.gif I suggest you keep robos if you have space constraint. Their wheel and bowl need not be very big since they're the smallest of the 5 breeds.

sad.gif No matter the reason, trapping an animal in a space smaller than itself means it will not be able to grow to its full size properly. It might get hunched back or bad bone formation or just can't grow so big.

@Neshie: Yah I know Ocha got "big balls" as Hun puts it. You wait. Ferro will grow more manly wan. tongue.gif Hehe... But to think about it, I also don wan Ferro's ball to grow so big. Later he have to drag his balls all over your hand when you handle him... wacko.gif
