Hi, just sent this in to Canon @ Peremba Square last week coz I got the infamous CANON CCD defect.

THey called me up today, saying I need to replace my optical lens unit which costs me RM394.. problem is I didn't have any problem with my Optical Unit before this, up until I got the infamous CCD defect error (Canon welcome screen, displays all status and settings but black screen, able to see old photos but not newer photos taken), and I don't know whether I should repair it or not.

This unit has served me well along the years, and it is a very tough unit, handling more than it is able to, surviving the rough years with me.

Well, do u think I should pay Canon to repair it for me or should I send it in to Canon Singapore?
Or bring to any reputable shop so that I can still at least salvage it?

Wow look like it's quite expensive just to repair the camera. My suggestion is save your money and use it for a new Camera. I think there are some pretty decent cameras around the 400-500 range from different manufacturers.

However if the camera does have sentimental value then by all mean go repair it. I still have a Powershot A70 with 3.2 megapixels. Lol...even cellphones come with better camera. However that camera has serve me really well through the years.

For 400 bucks you're better off upgrading a camera that's been around for 4 years. Spec wise you can easily get one comparable or better for the same price. Those Ixus or new powershot models are very good.

Conclusion : Time for an upgrade

Get Fuji F40fd for RM499 new unit

Problem is camera does not have that problem before servicing, I have a feeling that they screwed me up somehow, somewhere.

A solid case to get a free repair?

If you feel that you've got a case, then bump it a level higher and complain to the management. You can take back your unit and test but the techies might have already meddled with the unit.

Do you have paperwork of any preliminary inspection/testing done when you sent the camera for repair? Otherwise it'll just be your word against the techies.

The lady who was there @ the counter, wrote some things down like missing screws (dunno how the hell happened), some dents/scratches, rusted CF unit, LCD not working and that's all.

Problem is, she told me that because it was an outright CCD defect, they sent it to the factory to get the CCD changed, after that when it was delivered back to Peremba Square, the techies there checked again and found that the pictures taken not sharp (which puzzles me greatly, since it was working fine before this) and got lines alternating between the pictures (and this leads to the conclusion that my optical unit is faulty) taken.

So, how am I able to respond?

My advise is try. Let them investigate on their end. But don't keep your hopes too high.

By the way, are they charging you any service charges so far? All the hassle and service charges might make not make it worth your while.

Try whatever you can do to make them repair the camera for you at a more reasonable price (or FOC). If you failed, just buy a new camera. A Canon Powershot cost very little nowadays.

Called them up and they were firm with the price, it's alright then, think I'll have to live with a defective camera then.. loved the almost-full manual controls though.

Don't recommend me a Canon, dont even trust a Powershot after I've handled it, NOT one, NOT one feels as solid as mine.

What's their problem with the plastics and lightweight nowadays..? Heavier camera = steadier shots mah.. Build quality ain't like it was supposed to back in the older days, even the SX100IS feels like crap in my hands..

I want low ISO and high quality pictures, size doesn't matter, if accepts AA better! Best if have glass lens and IS as well.. seems like Canon Powershot G9's my only choice.

Yeah, actually, been itching to try for a DSLR for a long time already..

Shall honour myself by saying that I ACTUALLY knew how to use the manual mode on the Powershot A95 to my advantage and to take real good quality pictures, learned to steady my hand to take 1-2 secs exposure shots at night without tripods (well, learned to use tripods as well), and also various aperture and shutter settings.

So, problem now is $$$, for a measly student like me who's into too much stuff (audio/comp/photography), I wonder when will a DSLR drop until my glasses fall off!

Aww.. I thought to recommend you a Canon DSLR if you have interest in photography. You should write to Canon if you have bad experience with their product or service attendants.

OT: Still into PCDP? I think I saw you enquired a few used PCDP sale
