I wrote this review for Head-fi.org as I have achieved 1500 post count and earned the title of 'Headphoneus Supremus'. Please bear in mind that this review is based on international (U.S.) price so our local price will be a bit different (more $$$, if you know what I mean). You are welcome to ask any me any question regarding the IEM and how I rank them.

QUOTE
[OPENING] In celebration of all the time I wasted on this little hobby of mine and the post count I thought I won't achieve. here is a review of all the considerably good IEM I own over the years. I started my Head-fi journey in research of my first IEM, and I think this should serve well as my personal testament of sonic progression.

Reviewing gears: Sony D-EJ1000 PCDP’s line-out to Practical Device’s XM3 portable amp with AD8620 installed.

Reviewing CD: Custom made by ripping songs to FLAC than normalized/burnt via Nero9. Two songs with compression artifact included (CD → wma/mp3 → CD).

CD Tracks: [ Love Song - Sara Bareille / Have You Met Miss Jones? – Robbie Williams / Come Away with Me – Norah Jones / I Was Doing Alright – Diana Krall / Nostalgia – Yanni (Yanni Live At the Acropolis) / Not Of This Earth - Robbie Williams / Red Hot – Vanessa-Mea / Maneater – Nelly Furtado (artifact) / 1234 – Feist (artifact) ]

Rating: From one star (★, lowest rating) to five stars (★★★★★, highest rating), including half a star (☆). Criteria include [Packaging / Build Quality / Accessories / Isolation / Microphonics / Comfort / Soundstage / Sound Quality / Value]

IEM have all been burnt-in throughly and will be reviewed in chronological order of purchased date:

Shure E3c (2004)
user posted image
Variation: E3g, SCL3
Transducer: Single Balanced Armature
Spec: 26Ω (@1kHz) | 25Hz~ 18kHz | 115dB SPL | 28g
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.41m~ 1.57m.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, heavy build.
Eartips Used: Shure Gary Soft Flex
Packaging: ★★★★★
Build Quality: ★★★★★ (heavily build)
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (everything you need is included)
Isolation: ★★★★
Microphonics: ★★ (earbud style) | ★★★★ (over-the-ear style)
Comfort: ★★★ (thick cable is too heavy, plus not memory cable)
Soundstage: ★★☆
Sound Quality: ★★★ (warm, but lack bass and treble)
Value: ★★★ (not the best sounding for its price)
Remark: With sound quality of an entry class IEM, E3c does nothing spectacularly good but comes with a higher-than-competitor’s price. A solid choice 4 yrs ago, but not anymore. The thick cable is quite a burden to use on any wearing style.

Etymotic ER6i (2005)
user posted image
Variation: Black and white models with different accessories
Transducer: Single Balanced Armature
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 50Hz~ 16kHz | 108dB SPL | <28g
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.40m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, light build. (Black model is L plug).
Eartips Used: Tri-flanges
Packaging: ★★★★☆
Build Quality: ★★★★ (light build)
Accessories: ★★★★ (included pouch offers little protection)
Isolation: ★★★★★ (-36dB!!!)
Microphonics: ★★★ (earbud style) | ★★★★★ (w/ shirt clip)
Comfort: ★★★★ (light to wear, but deep inserting eartips)
Soundstage: ★★ (one of Ety’s weak point]
Sound Quality: ★★★ (analytical, bass light but offers great detail)
Value: ★★★★ (cheap street price and great sound when used with foam)
Remark: One of the main competitors with E3c when it was released. Street price is low now which makes it a good choice as entry class IEM. With Shure Black Foam sleeve, the bass problem can be improved. Thin cable but it will harden up in time result in more microphonics.

Creative EP-630 (2006)
user posted image
Variation: Black and white color, EP-635 (lanyard style).
Transducer: Single 8mm Dynamic
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 6Hz~ 23kHz | 106dB SPL | 9g
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.20m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, light build.
Eartips Used: Single flange
Packaging: ★★★
Build Quality: ★★★★ (light build)
Accessories: ★★☆ (nothing but different size eartips)
Isolation: ★★★
Microphonics: ★★★
Comfort: ★★★★★
Soundstage: ★★★
Sound Quality: ★★ (warm, muddy bass without much treble)
Value: ★★☆ (cheap price so there is nothing to expect)
Remark: Except for comfort, there is nothing especially good on EP-630. However with price so low, how can one expect it to sound good? It will serve okay as a cheap backup, but not really a good choice for SQ.

Sennheiser CX300 (2006)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Dynamic
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 18Hz~ 21kHz | 112dB SPL | 9g
Cord Style: J-cord, 1.20m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, normal build.
Eartips Used: Single flange
Packaging: ★★★
Build Quality: ★★★★ (light build)
Accessories: ★★☆ (nothing but different size eartips)
Isolation: ★★★
Microphonics: ★★★
Comfort: ★★★★★
Soundstage: ★★★☆
Sound Quality: ★★☆ (warm, bloated bass)
Value: ★★★ (Get it for cheap than it is a slightly better choice than EP-630)
Remark: The bloated bass is the biggest weakness of CX300. The official price is also too high, but this seems to be very common among Sennheiser’s low end products. With the current low street price, it is a reasonable good backup option.

Altec Lansing ‘InMontion’ iM716 (2007)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Balanced Armature
Spec: User selectable HD / Bass mode on inline volume control pod
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.40m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, light build.
Eartips Used: Tri-flanges
Packaging: ★★★★
Build Quality: ★★★★
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (Included case is balky, but functional)
Isolation: ★★★★☆
Microphonics: ★★ (w/o clip) | ★★★★ (w/ clip)
Comfort: ★★★ (not the best to wear because of the inline volume pod)
Soundstage: ★★ (HD mode) | ★★☆ (Bass mod)
Sound Quality: ★★★★ (Analytical, Bass mode adds a bit warmness)
Value: ★★★☆ (One of the best bargain when you find it cheap. Only downfall is it is out of production so don’t expect warranty for long)
Remark: One of the best values in IEM market as dealers are clearing their stock with ultra low price. The volume pod can be mod'ed to give an even better SQ closer to than of ER4P. However, don’t expect Altec Lansing to honor the warranty once you mod it. Will sound really great if you amp it.

CrossRoad MylarOne X3 (2007)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Dynamic
Spec: n/a
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.20m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, light build.
Eartips Used: UE style bi-flange
Packaging: ★★ (very simple package)
Build Quality: ★★☆ (light build, need good care to last)
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (A lot compare to its price)
Isolation: ★★★
Microphonics: ★★ (w/o clip) | ★★★★ (w/ clip)
Comfort: ★★★★☆
Soundstage: ★★★☆
Sound Quality: ★★☆ (balance, a bit bass light, but good detail)
Value: ★★★★ (Cheaper than EP-630 on local price, yet better than CX300)
Remark: Despite the build quality isn’t really good, X3 sounds like a pair of less refine ER6i, and you can’t beat it for the low price and a good solid warranty.

Sleek Audio SA6 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Balanced Armature with Custom Porting
Spec: 50Ω (@1kHz) | 110dB SPL
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.15m, Replaceable
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, heavy build.
Eartips Used: bi-flanges
Packaging: ★★★☆
Build Quality: ★★★☆ (there are still room for improvement, but overly good)
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (Included case isn’t very functional)
Isolation: ★★★★★
Microphonics: ★★★ (earbud style) | ★★★★★ (over-the-ear style)
Comfort: ★★★★☆ (one of the most comfortable deep inserting IEM)
Soundstage: ★★★★ (w/ Bass+ port)
Sound Quality: ★★★★☆ (warm, mid centric with some of the best vocal but doesn’t lack bass or treble)
Value: ★★★★ (For $250, I expect a bit better on quality)
Remark: SA6 is a great example of how single BA transducer can sound great. Though the overall quality (both on sound and build) isn’t the best yet (when considering its price), I believe there is still room for improvement as SA6 is the first IEM for Sleek Audio. The custom porting (VQ system) works well. For people who love a warm, full, detail yet musical sound, SA6 just might be the one for you. [UPDATE] To me, SA6 is on the warm side, but not dark. The mid has a full body that is especially good with vocal. The treble (T++ port) reaches quite far and gives enough detail to show some sparkle but not to a point of fatiguing. Bass (on B+ port, pin hole mod) is accurate and fast, though not the best or biggest impact I heard and lack a good resolution on depth, it seems to well suit the full mid. The soundstage is better than most but not the best I heard. All and all, SA6 present a very musical sound that can easily make most music more engaging. I'll say SA6's sound signature is a combination of all the nice characteristics I'll be looking for in a pair of IEM. As of why it falls short of being the best is because, though SA6 is really good sounding, it can still be a bit congesting on busy passage. I think it is because SA6 still lacks the best resolution and the body of sound to be ranked as the best. [EDIT] With some retailers now selling them for only $200, SA6 are now one of the best value IEM in the market IMO.

Head-Direct’s RE2 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Dynamic
Spec: 32Ω (@1kHz)
Cord Style: Y-cord, 0.90m.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, very light build.
Eartips Used: Big bi-flanges
Packaging: n/a (sampling package)
Build Quality: ★★★★ (solid but nothing spectacular)
Accessories: ★★★☆ (a shirt clip will be nice)
Isolation: ★★★☆ (semi-open design but doesn’t leak sound)
Microphonics: ★★★ (earbud style)
Comfort: ★★★★★
Soundstage: ★★★★☆
Sound Quality: ★★★☆ (analytical, light on bass, clearly a step up from ER6i and approaching the amped iM716)
Value: ★★★★★ (what can a man ask for with such a low price of $99?)
Remark: RE2 sounds like a more refine ER6i. Though not pumping out a lot of bass, the great detail should be more than enough considered it is only $99. The included big bi-flanges really do their job well. Better soundstage and not need for amping make it a better choice over iM716. The only downside is the short cable (plus the included extension cable is quite heavy).

Head-Direct’s RE1 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single Dynamic
Spec: 150Ω (@1kHz)
Cord Style: Y-cord, 0.90m.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, very light build.
Eartips Used: Big bi-flanges
Packaging: n/a (sampling package)
Build Quality: ★★★★ (solid but nothing spectacular)
Accessories: ★★★☆ (a shirt clip will be nice)
Isolation: ★★★☆ (semi-open design but doesn’t leak sound)
Microphonics: ★★★ (earbud style)
Comfort: ★★★★★
Soundstage: ★★★★★ (the best soundstage when amped)
Sound Quality: ★★★★☆ (slightly dark but very smooth and forgiving, must be amped well to reveal its potential. One of the best dynamic I ever heard).
Value: ★★★★☆ (Not getting 5 stars after factor in the price for an amp, but still quite a great deal)
Remark: With a fast and detail amp, RE1 can sound amazingly great, putting it next to some of the best universal IEM in the market. Even after factoring in the price of reasonably good amp (~$150), I still think it is a good deal. If you already have a good amp, than there is no reason why you shouldn’t consider getting a pair of RE1. Mind you the slightly dark SQ means it is not the ultra detail IEM you are looking for. However, It is perfect for those who want a smooth and laid back sounding IEM that you can listen for hours and feel no fatigue at all. Note that RE1 has the same short cable as RE2.

Ultimate Ears’ Triple.fi 10 Pro (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Triple Balanced Armature in two ways configuration
Spec: 32Ω (@1kHz) | 10Hz~ 17kHz | 117dB SPL | 16g
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.10m. Memory cable. Replaceable.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, heavy build.
Eartips Used: Mod’ed Shure Black Foam
Packaging: ★★★★☆
Build Quality: ★★★★★
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (Included foam are trash)
Isolation: ★★★★ (-26dB, better with foam eartips)
Microphonics: ★★★★★ (over-the-ear style)
Comfort: ★★★☆ (won’t work if you have really small ear canal. Big earpiece)
Soundstage: ★★★★☆ (very good, but not the best. Great instrument separation)
Sound Quality: ★★★★★ (very balance and airy, a slight harshness on treble but fixable by foam).
Value: ★★★★☆ (Not getting 5 stars because I am expecting everything to be perfect but it is not, see remark)
Remark: If you can get a good fit, there is no doubt that TF10 has one of the best SQ in universal IEM. I’ll like to think that I am paying a premier price because everything is best in its class, but it just isn’t so. The foam tips included are basically trash as one of them broke apart even before I fully inserted it onto the IEM, and the other one is even worst as the foam is glued to the silicone tube on the wrong side (the smooth side should be facing the eardrum but it is not). They should have asked Comply to produce the foam instead of making some sub-par accessories themselves.

Sony MDR-EX700SL (2008)
user posted image
Variation: MDR-EX700LP (one piece cable)
Transducer: Single 16mm Dynamic
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 4Hz~ 28kHz | 108dB SPL | 7g
Cord Style: J-cord. Two pieces, 0.50m + 1.00m (LP model has one piece cable)
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, light build.
Eartips Used: Single flange
Packaging: ★★★★★ (One of the nicest looking package on IEM)
Build Quality: ★★★★☆ (cable tangles too easily).
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (excellent case and tips but shirt clip needed!)
Isolation: ★★ (around -20dB, the worst of all)
Microphonics: ★★★★ (earbud style)
Comfort: ★★★★☆ (quite comfortable despite the size)
Soundstage: ★★★★ (good soundstage, but a bit lack in depth / not airy enough)
Sound Quality: ★★★★☆ (balance, too much harshness on treble not even T400 can fix, good bass, slightly recessed mid in comparison).
Value: ★★★★ (Overall nice package, but SQ isn’t there yet)
Remark: If you even want to sell people a two piece cabal IEM, you better included a shirt clip. Despite using really light material (aluminum, magnesium), the combined cable is still fairly heavy and annoying. Once I put a clip on it, I realize it won’t fit the case anymore (not that the SL model fits well before). Beside the missing clip, some of the major downside include the easily tangle cable, very little isolation, plus comfortable but easily damage eartips. Sony has made an effort to create a worthy high class IEM, but it isn’t at the top yet. If you want to get EX700, get the LP model instead

JAYS q-Jays (2008)
user posted image
Variation: Black and white models. q-Jays LE (red and blue models)
Transducer: Dual Balanced Armature
Spec: 39Ω (@1kHz) | 20Hz~ 20kHz | 95dB SPL | 8g
Cord Style: Y-cord. Two pieces, 0.60m + 0.90m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, light build.
Eartips Used: Single flange
Packaging: ★★★★☆ (One of the nicest looking package on IEM)
Build Quality: ★★★★★ (solid European's quality).
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (excellent accessories only let down by not functional case and not shirt clip)
Isolation: ★★★★
Microphonics: ★★★ (earbud style) | ★★★★ (over-the-ear style)
Comfort: ★★★☆ (where is the shirt clip when you need one?)
Soundstage: ★★★☆ (fair soundstage)
Sound Quality: ★★★★ (slightly warm, very slight harshness on treble, excellent bass on quantity and quality).
Value: ★★★★☆ (solid package for a mid class IEM)
Remark: Though might not be the best sounding IEM in its price range (close though), the extra goodies that come with the package do proof q-Jays to have an excellent value for the money. The two downsides are 1) the included case won’t fit the IEM with extension cable and 2) why won’t JAYS includes a shirt clip for a two pieces cable?

Sony MDR-EX85SL (2008)
user posted image
Variation: MDR-EX85LP (one piece cable)
Transducer: Single 13.5mm Dynamic
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 5Hz~ 24kHz | 105dB SPL | 6g
Cord Style: J-cord. Two pieces, 0.50m + 1.00m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, normal build.
Eartips Used: Single flange
Packaging: N/A (OEM package)
Build Quality: ★★★★ (Nothing special)
Accessories: ★★★☆ (Still looking for the same old shirt clip)
Isolation: ★★★
Microphonics: ★★★
Comfort: ★★★★ (Weird angle of the earpiece)
Soundstage: ★★★ (fair soundstage)
Sound Quality: ★★☆ (warm, not particularly detail but acceptable, slightly muddy mid, bass lacks depth and quality)
Value: ★★★ (Low street price gives it a fair value)
Remark: EX85 is about the same level as CX300 in SQ, but different in sonic character. CX300 has bloated bass and treble while lack good body mid; EX85 has good mid but lack good detail and bass depth. Like the CX300, it can serve as a good backup pair since the street price is reasonable, but it isn't 'monitor' level SQ like Sony claims.

Shure SE530 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: SE530PTH (with extra Push-To-Talk unit)
Transducer: Triple Balanced Armature in two ways configuration
Spec: 36Ω (@1kHz) | 18Hz~ 19kHz | 119dB SPL | 29g
Cord Style: Y-cord, Two pieces, 0.45 + 0.91m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, heavy build.
Eartips Used: Shure Black Foam
Packaging: ★★★★★ (aluminum box is really nice)
Build Quality: ★★★★☆(loose connection in less than one week, replacement pending)
Accessories: ★★★★★ (olive is good, attenuator is a plus)
Isolation: ★★★★★
Microphonics: ★★★★★ (over-the-ear style)
Comfort: ★★★★☆ (heavily built cable isn't particularly comfortable, plus there is no memory cable to hold the cable in place)
Soundstage: ★★★★ (good, but not the best. Slight improvement when using silicones eartip)
Sound Quality: ★★★★☆ (Slightly on the warm side with good, solid and full mid and bass, a bit dark sounding if used from a warm source, slightly roll off treble but improved when amped; On the plus side, SE530 is slightly more forgiving on low bitrate music).
Value: ★★★★ (More expensive than TF10, but doesn't offer more of anything)
Remark: Does SE530 sounds good? I guess the answer is 'Yes'. Does it sound better than TF10? My instinct tells me 'No'. The reason is, SE530 sounds so 'conservative' (if you can describe it that way) that it lacks surprise of any kind. It seems to have a very solid sound characteristic but the lack of spark always leaves me wanting more. I guess most people will find SE530's sound pretty easy going, but I think I'll prefer a sound that carries more excitement in it. Perhaps I am just not too fond of Shure's house sound? On extra note, SE530 could easily be the most comfortable IEM in the batch, but I just wish Shure could include memory wire on the cable which would have made wearing it a lot more easier.

CrossRoads MylarOne Bijou 3 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a.
Transducer: Single 9mm Dynamic
Spec: 16Ω (@1kHz) | 20Hz ~ 22kHz | 95 + 4 dB SPL | 2mW (10mW Max)
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.40m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, light build.
Eartips Used: UE style bi-flange
Packaging: ★★★☆ (improved since previous version)
Build Quality: ★★★★ (Good build, significant improvement with aluminum earpieces, proper strain relief, and stronger cable )
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (A lot compare to its price, still a CrossRoads strong point)
Isolation: ★★★
Microphonics: ★★ (w/o clip) | ★★★★ (w/ clip)
Comfort: ★★★★☆
Soundstage: ★★★ (slightly less airy thus less soundstage)
Sound Quality: ★★☆ (warm and fun sounding, lower midrange hump around 200Hz ~ 250Hz, but decent detail. Slightly better than CX300 but not on the level of X3 yet)
Value: ★★★★ (Same price as the X3i, still cheaper than EP-630 or CX300 in local price. Factoring in the improved build quality and accessories, it still holds better value than the cheaper CX300 (in U.S.))
Remark: First, the Bijou 3 needs a lot of burn-in. You should burn it in for at least 50hrs before even attends to listen to it. Serious audition will be better scheduled after 100hrs. With out proper burn in, Bijou 3 can sound very muddy with uncontrolled mid bass and roll off high. Second, although the build quality has shown significant improvement, the sound quality does not (show improvement as significant). In fact, one can argue whether it is an improvement on SQ, or perhaps it is a swift of sound characteristic as the old MylarOne sounds quite different from the current Bijou 3 (from analytical to fun sounding). Personally, I do prefer the more analytical sound of the old X3. Those of you who find Bijou 3 lower midrange hump muddy up the sound can try to EQ the 200Hz ~ 250Hz region down a bit. The end result is a more balanced sound that has better controlled treble and very slightly deeper bass than CX300.

Westone UM2 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: Black and translucent.
Transducer: Dual balanced armature
Spec: 27Ω (@1kHz) | 20Hz~ 18kHz | 119dB SPL | 30g
Cord Style: Y-cord. Braided. 1.30m
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, heavy build.
Eartips Used: Stock Comply P-series slim foam tips
Packaging: ★★★★ (Nothing spectacular here)
Build Quality: ★★★★★ (Solid. The cable might seem fragile at first but actually well constructed)
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (Lack silicone tips. Comply tips are good but silicone tips should be included)
Isolation: ★★★★☆ (Excellent isolation, close to the best)
Microphonics: ★★★★★ (Close to no microphonics at all. Braided cable works very well)
Comfort: ★★★★★ (Definitely one of the most comfort IEM there is. The soft cable is a big plus!)
Soundstage: ★★★☆ (Fair. The warm and forward mid reduces airiness, results in smaller soundstage)
Sound Quality: ★★★★☆ (By far the warmest IEM among all the top end IEM. Very mid centric, like SA6 w/ stronger bass response, but doesn't sparkle as much on treble and less airy, slightly harsh)
Value: ★★★★ (As a dual driver, UM2 has SQ that can rival those triple drivers, but there are newer, cheaper dual driver on the market that come with better accessories. For the price I paid, it kind of makes me wish for more)
Remark: UM2 spots a very warm, very musical sound signature. Slightly stronger bass than SE530 (mostly because of more mid-bass), with a more forward, fuller mid but less treble detail. Though warm, there is a bit of highlight on the 6~8kHz region resulting in slight harshness, which actually prevents it from sounding too dark despite the fact that it sounds less detail than SE530 (especially on the upper treble). Because of the much forward mid, soundstage actually suffered a bit as the sense of airiness is greatly reduced. Depends on your listening preference, UM2 can be good or bad. It certainly isn't for those who are looking for balance, neutral, cold or analytical sound. However, If you like your music warm and full, UM2 could be the treat you are looking for. If sound signature is a scale, I will place TF10 on one end, SE530 very close to the middle, and UM2 at the other end.

Future Sonics Atrio M5 rev.2 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: M8 (blue color earpiece)
Transducer: MG5pro™ single dynamic
Spec: 32Ω (@1kHz) | 18Hz~ 20kHz | 112dB SPL
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.30m.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated L style, light build.
Eartips Used: Stock EarFills sleeves
Packaging: ★★★★ (Nothing spectacular here)
Build Quality: ★★★★★ (Quite solid)
Accessories: ★★★★★ (The included case is larger than needed, but of good quality. Two packs of foam tips is a plus)
Isolation: ★★★★ (Better than average, but not among the best. isolation improves if using foam tips)
Microphonics: ★★★★ (earbud style. The QuietCables II works rather well)
Comfort: ★★★★ (The EarFills bi-flanges are not the easiest eartips to insert or remove)
Soundstage: ★★★☆ (Fair soundstage, lack in airiness which limits soundstage. Strong upfront bass (or weak mid / treble, depend on your own view) distorts overall imaging)
Sound Quality: ★★★★ (Fun and slightly warm, monstrous bass with great depth but very slightly lack in speed, forgiving, lack in fine upper treble detail and close to sparkle-less)
Value: ★★★★★(The MSRP might be listed close to US$200 but the actual street price can be close to 1/3 lower. For that reason, Atrio has earn a spot as the top valuer)
Remark: It is not an opinion if someone tell you Atrio M5 / M8 is for basshead, it is the truth. It is hard to imagine an IEM is capable of kicking out so much bass in such a great depth - that is you can also hear the sub-bass in a decent frequency response. None IEM I heard is ever close to pushing out half that of Atrio in the bass department. One of the best thing is, Atrio is able to pump bass out without muddy up the mid and retain enough treble detail to not sound dark, though it definitely isn't the detail sounding IEM people are looking for. Generally, I consider Atrio to be quite smooth sounding and not fatiguing, provides that you are into big bass. Atrio can be fatiguing if you can't accept big bass smashing into your head (as more than one occasion I actually feel my head is vibrating.) On extra note, Atrio requires a bit of burn-in to reach its final sound signature. I'll suggest 50 hrs as the minimum and 100hrs before any serious audition.

SoundMAGIC PL-30 (2008)
user posted image
Variation: n/a
Transducer: Single 9mm Dynamic
Spec: 12Ω (@1kHz) | 20Hz~ 22kHz | 102+3dB SPL | 10g
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.20m.
Mini Jack Style: Gold plated straight style, Light build.
Eartips Used: UE style bi-flanges.
Packaging: ★★★☆ (surprisingly well packaged for the price)
Build Quality: ★★★ (Okay build quality. Care needed to last, especially on the bass knob)
Accessories: ★★★★☆ (Good selection of eartips included, especially the Shure 'olive' style foam. Good thing that they also include a shirt clip)
Isolation: ★☆ (less than -20dB, the worst of all. Foam will improve isolation but will result in a darker sound signature)
Microphonics: ★★★★☆ (over-the-ear style, very little microphonics even w/o the shirt clip)
Comfort: ★★★★ (Good, but the cable doesn't particularly like to stay over-the-ear w/o a bit of persuasion
Soundstage: ★★★★ (Airy sound with a good sense of space and separation)
Sound Quality: ★★☆ (Neutral sound w/ a bit of analytical quality, bass light but offers good detail. SQ is roughly on-par w/ Bijou3 but with an opposite presentation. Resemble the SQ of MylarOne X3 but w/ less bass. Quite seal and eartips dependent for achieving an ideal sound)
Value: ★★★★☆ (Capable of matching the performance of those which double in price and beating most, if not all, sub $50 IEM gives PL-30 a rather good value for money)
Remark: Before serious auditioning, a 24 hrs burn-in is recommended for the removal of the slight hint of harshness. If you can get them for less than $30, I'll say you have got yourself a good deal. Less than $20? Even better. However, paying such an low low price does come with its own downside (I have to wait for a month just to receive my $20 PL-30, and it will probably take all the patience in your life because the shipping update is pretty much not existed). At this point, you should have realized PL-30 isn't the Excalibur you are hoping for. It is not the magic cure if you are searching for better SQ. However, PL-30 does capable of rival most IEM around the $50 mark (and that's probably as far as it goes). Due to the earpieces' design, getting a good seal might require a bit of effort. A bad seal means PL-30 will turn from bass-light to bass-none. Using the foam, however, will darken PL-30 overall sound signature in exchange for more bass. Personally, I find the two different setting for bass knob to be quite subtle. The clear bass setting is slightly airier, while deep bass setting gives a bit of warmness to the overall tone. You will most likely get more result via EQing. For those who are looking for more bass w/o resolving to EQ, try FiiO E3 (the synergy is good, but there might be a hint of hiss depends on your DAP).

[FAQ]
Here are a few useful Q&A over at Head-fi.org

1) How much burn in do your EX700 have?
Should be over 50 hrs by now. Interesting that the Sony employee that sold me the IEM actually told me to 'break it in for 100hrs' to reveal the mid and bass. Unfortunately there is little change to the sound after 20hrs or so. Through I will continue to burn it in, I doubt there will be any significant change at all (plus, it will take a major re-sharp of its treble response to bring down the harshness).

What I gather from the EX700 thread seems to also indicate that the first 20 hrs has the most significant effect, kind of re-comfirm my experience.

2) I think SA6 is a better value than its ranking, mainly because it is comparable to the higher end IEMs (TF, 530, etc.), yet costs at least $100 less.
SA6's SQ definitely worth the money, but my main concern is the build quality (especially when I compare it against the q-Jays). If Sleek Audio can improve a bit on the build quality or priced SA6 a bit lower, I won't hesitate to move it up two or three spots. Perhaps I will move it up once the wireless module is released.

3) So SA6 has build quality issue?
Just bit and pieces of minor issue.

I (and several others if you keep track on the original SA6 thread) received my SA6 with a faulty treble port. Good thing that Jason is quick on the replacement. Sleek Audio is really fast on the response and I know they have moved production back to U.S. (from China) to improve on QC, which is a good thing.

What I'll like to see improvement are 1) The included case is really nice to look at but putting SA6 inside isn't as easy as it seems. 2) The mini jack is larger than it needs to be. 3) Too many chromed pieces on the IEM. Basically speaking, I am just being really picky here but I think the design of SA6 can still be improved by getting rid off the unneeded decorative pieces and focusing more on getting the functional pieces done just right. Simpler design can have a beauty of its own.

To be fair, I want to make a note that the reason I seems to be extra picky on the SA6 is because it is my favorite IEM and therefore I do look at its more strictly than other. If Sleek Audio even fix the 3 issue I raised, than a solid 4 stars on build quality will be given. The reason why I won't give build quality a 5 stars rating is because of the VQ system. Although VQ system works well for the SQ rating, having too many moving parts means wear and tear will be more significant, thus reduce the rating.

4) Strange how you rate the CX300's value higher than the EP-630's when the EP630's are significantly cheaper than the CX300's while being close to the sound of the CX300's.
It used to be that EP-630 was costing around $25 while CX300 was $80, therefore it didn't make sense to buy CX300 with 3 times the price of EP-630 cause CX300 isn't 3 times better.

However, now EP-630 is still around $25 (from a reputable sellier like Amazon) while CX300 has dropped to around $50 thus making it a viable choice. Why? The reason is, you can somewhat cure CX300's bloated bass with a bit of EQing and making it sounds like a more neutral and detail 'phone, which is quite acceptable for its low price. But you can't get rid of the muddy bass of EP-630 with EQ, nor can you make it as detail as CX300. So even the Senn is still more expensive, the lower street price makes it a better value over EP-630.

5) what makes you favor the RE1 over the SA6?
The simple reason will be, when I plug both of them into my amp and A/B them on the same volume, RE1 just sound better than SA6 in all regard except for detail/treble.

RE1's smooth sound is so effortless it gives me the feeling of closing my eyes, kick back and enjoy the music - a feeling I often found on big can. On the other hand, SA6 (and most other IEM) is too much on the attack thus I never quite feel like I can be totally 'relax' when I am using SA6. This minor feeling is why RE1 is above SA6 - for the comforting factor of its smooth sound, if you like.

6) RE1 / RE2 look somewhat cheap, almost exactly like the buds that come with my Sony Ericsson phones, except they come with bi-flanges. Do they isolate as well as other IEMs, or are they more canalphones (you mentioned they don't leak sound, but do they block out exterior noise as well)?
With the big bi-flanges, you get slightly better isolation than EP-630 / CX300 on RE1 /2, and it should be more than enough for city life.

Unfortunately the design is quite common among generic China made IEM, as Chinese manufacturer often share the same industrial design to lower cost. The good news is, they sounds much better than those Sony

Hey a nice one! However just a suggestion here, maybe the price of each of those IEMs can be added under each review of the IEM instead of some of the price info are scattered under remark part & FAQ part. Just a suggestion smile.gif

Anyway able to see some other products which i should say less common over here in Malaysia. thumbup.gif

Estimated price added to the Best Value Ranking. Note that those are international price so you should expect them to be more expensive locally.

PM yuheng, maybe he can get it for you from Jaben. I'll expect the price to be over RM800.

I only know places in Singapore where you can get Shure black foam, mainly Stereo Electronic @ Causeway Point, Jaben, and a few store in SimLim Square.

If you can get SA6 for cheap, than go for it. It might not has the strongest build among the top IEM, it does however has a great SQ, as long as you take care of it.

Excellent reviews. I'm quite suprised at how well the RE2's scored in comparison with the rest.

I'm curious though, discounting the shirt clip issue, how does the Q-jay fare on comfort?

RE2 scores a high ranking because it offers a SQ higher than its asking price.

Put aside the shirt clip issue, q-Jays should score a 4 star on comfort. The reason why it won't get a 5 stars is, the q-Jays' eartips isn't the most comfortable among all the eartips I tried.

Here are the reason:

SE530 and Triple.fi 10 are both considered to be the best of universal IEM, you can't really say SE530 is definitely better than TF10 in sound quality. The most important reason I haven't bought a SE530 is because SE530 has very serious cable cracking problem. On average, the cable only last one year in active use before it'll crack and you have to send the whole thing back to U.S. to claim warranty - Personally, I don't feel like paying over RM1k for that kind of quality. The 13 pair of IEM in this review cost me >RM5k over the years, how many people in Malaysia invest so much money in headphone, left along IEM only? I'll really like to own every single IEM even made, but I have to consider my budget and buy what I believe is truly worth the money I pay for.

As for custom, it isn't just about resale value. Custom has a relatively short shell life - often estimated to be around 4 yrs or so. Our ears will keep growing throughout our life, and custom mold will not longer fit after certain time frame (which depends on how fast your ear will grow, but adult's ear grow roughly 0.22mm every year). Custom relies on a perfect seal to give you a superior sound, but after a few years the custom will not give a perfect fit anymore. I always keep my headphone in the the best condition I can, and I'll expect them to last a long time. To invest a good sum on money on custom only to realize they will not fit my ear a few years later isn't my idea of 'last a long time'.

There are a lot more to consider when buying IEM beside the obvious issue of SQ, I'll post my IEM guide (maybe) tonight. Hopefully you will get a better picture of how to buy, use, and maintain an IEM.

Thanks for clearing it up Cleo smile.gif
I am jus puzzled over highest iem that was in the topic
As for shure i also heard complaint about cable issue- they will stiff and crack over prolonged use and believe me i had these problem and had to rma back
But luckily they changed it back and they changed the cable to much better quality (april shure version)
this is my opinion bout shure i know they rolled off the high to match treble but in terms comfort they r best when pair with shure olives
Dont get me wrong i try the ue triple 10 pro and their sound was better and clearer than shure but i dont like they sticking out so much and some ppl complain over comfortablity issues and fitting

As for custom, i believe an adult ear will stop growing at certain stage at 28 or 30 and the only thing custom eartip will get lossen overtime over prolonged use
As u say earlier, they dont have resale value and get replaced by better version - (heard bout 5 drivers iem by japan) (2 crossover) brows.gif
Anyway some new iem like Qjays and westone 3 r coming nearby (The world is full of suprise )
Thanks for lending an ear and i believe it will help and clear any issue
Sharing is caring smile.gif

The ear canal might not change much after teen, but the outer ear will keep growing till you kick the bucket. If you are interested, here is a scientific research published last year, I believe. The researchers spent quite a long time measuring 200+ people since they were 30 till they are 80+.

The problem is, if your outer ear grow too fast, it won't hold the custom mold as tight as it can be in a few years and you'll lose the seal easily.

4 years is a bit short. After 20 your ears wont grow so significant, most people actually manage to use up to 7~9 years until they need a re-mold.

hi...clieOs
first off..excellent reviews.i've read ur thread in head-fi and now here in LYN...great job. notworthy.gif
following ur info in Earphones recomendation thread.i finally ordered a pair of Atrio M5 from Road Dog online in Ebay...
after been saving for the past few mths..lol. sweat.gif

guess the temptation or poison is just too much for me to resist after reading the reviews of M5... in head-fi.
personally am a IEM freak because of its portability...started off with:
OVC-TC20 which has good clarity and treble but light on bass. rclxms.gif
Shure scl2 with tighter bass, good isolation and built quality.(using it for my movies with asus xonar u1 external sc) wub.gif
V-moda vibe are lively and punchy.these are great IEM that hold itself well musically. thumbup.gif

read that M5 is a step above moda vibe...can't wait for mine to arrive brows.gif cool.gif
will give my impression when i got this babe.

cry.gif Sad to report this, but the right side of my newly purchased SE530 has developed connection problem. It seems that the wire on the Y splitter is faulty (I should have noticed it yesterday but the problem wasn't very obvious then so I thought the problem lied on my DAP's headphone socket). I already make a call to the dealer and he has agreed for a replacement after inspection. The IEM are less than a week old. Even with the burn-in and serious audition, the totally hours are still under 100hrs. It could be that I got myself a lemon, but I would expect something better. For that, half a star will be taken away from SE530's build quality rating.

Hi, I've sold my Ety and I'm getting this. It is called Livewires, a custom IEM, it is gonna be quite a long process. I've just got my ear impressions made and shipped over to the company for them to start making the earphone for me. Once they receive the ear impressions, they will start making one, it will take about a month before I can get them. This product has been claimed to sound towards Ety but with improved bass and high end Grados.

Attached Image
And here are my ear impressions, total of 2 pairs, hearing aid specialist or any audiologist around town can do these stuffs, I did this in a hearing aid specialist in Gleneagles hospital. Not cheap, but reasonable and they did a nice job for me. I've spend RM70 for these stuffs. I had a bad experience and mess from the first audiologist, I was not satisfied and I didn't want to sent those, so, these are my second try actually. Luckily the first one costed me RM20 only. And plus shipping, I've actually spent RM200 just for these impressions!

Sounds like you're describing SuperFis. cool.gif

Grados and Etys are like at completely different ends of the spectrum though, I tend to find Grados more coloured which gives it its fantastic adaptability to rock/live music while ER-4s are as transparent as transparent gets... ie. flat. yawn.gif

I wish I still had my ER-4Ps though, they were my main portable IEMs for a good 2 years before they got stolen along with my iPod. vmad.gif

I wish I still had my ER-4Ps though, they were my main portable IEMs for a good 2 years before they got stolen along with my iPod. vmad.gif
*
Whether it is towards which sound signatures, it is just a general guideline, I've not heard Grados frankly, and my ex ety was definitely not Senn sounding. I've sold my Ety, we should have been communicating for a deal tongue.gif .

Nah ER-4s sound nothing like Senns... in fact I find them quite the opposite. I probably wouldn't buy ER-4s again, they're nice but a bit too neutral for outdoor use. They're exactly what they are.. monitors. Lots of detail but absolutely no colouration.

RS-1s are very very very nice for live music... its hard not to start tapping your feet when you listen to one. tongue.gif

it's all depend on synergy between your ear/brain, player/source and earphone.

it's endless arguement which one is better. BK/McD, BMW/Merc, Ferrari/Lambo, etc lol

best is to try and hear for yourself.

It is a complex issue with no certain answer. If someone is trying to sell you the idea that one kind of IEM design is far better than the other, than he/she is either 1) trying to lie to you or 2) don't know what he/she is talking about. The IEM technology are still evolving very fast (in comparison to big cans), and those you think is inferior might become the star of tomorrow.

For example, two years ago everyone thought triple drives was how balanced armature going to be, but Sleek Audio and Klipsch now have single drive that can rival two and three drivers.

Real good reviews! safe lotsa time for those who are searching their right IEMs.

A lil off topic, I wish to hear how you find se530's cables? After waited for a year, westone 3 still doenst seem to be releasing soon, hence I've ordered se530, although i've heard their infamous cable cracking issue.

I have a pair of E4c, the cable cracked TWICE, on my third pair after warranty (and Im feeling they'll crack eventually). Its a shame that shure carried the cable problem from the E to SE series... Since the cable hardens overtime then crack, I wana prevent it from happening from the first minute i wear them. I've searchd on head-fi, the only solution is cleaning the cable with damp cloth and a hint of soap.

i wish to know how you take care of your se530's cable? Or is there any easy mods to save the cables? Or any good ways to mount the cable with something before they crack?

buy the armorall protection liquid used for car waxing
i use it every two week to clean my se530 wires and it does great to relieve my stiffen wires
other than that it will make my wires shine like brand new and make it more elastic

I don't have any special care on the cable. The cracking cable issue is most apparent on the SE530 before 2008. Since this year, Shure has change the cable material so the new version has more resistance to cracking. OF course, you can use Armorall, but I don't know how well it actually is since I don't use it.

If you could get a SE530 for RM950 and a triple.fi for RM875, which would you get? I can't decide... Currently have a super.fi, quite pleased with it, but never tried the shures.

I'll pick TF10 myself as I prefer the sound signature of TF10 over SE530.

ER4 is great on detail and neutrality, but if you want to listen to a more musical sound, it certainly couldn't compare to SE530 or TF10. It is all about listening preference.

just got my Livewires, it is awesome, it is definitely one of the best sounding IEM, it is a custom IEM espeically for the price of getting a custom IEM. I can confirm that I wouldn't say it is Ety sounding as many in Head Fi been claiming, maybe the sound signature is in the similar group if I really have to say that. I'm thrilled with it after traded it with my Ety ER-4P, it has lots of quality bass, lots of low end bass and tight mid bass, it is awesome, and it is warmer than the Ety, the high is slightly less than the Ety, I wouldn't say the high is inferior to Ety, only that everything is warmer than the Ety, and I would say it is calmer than the Ety when play in a comfortable volume. When the volume is turn up adventurously loud, I personally scare of turning up too loud as I really scare if it will really hurt my ears and cause hearing loss in long run. Anyway, if turn up louder, it is so powerful with lots of dynamics maybe because it is fed but lots of quality low and mid end bass. In high volume everything is so well control, and I won't feel the "honking" vocal high notes from the Ety. I'm so thrill with it. Custom is the big plus, I can slug it in my ear for many many hours and I don't think I will feel any discomfort at all but my Ety can make my ear very painful after 45mins of use. I luv my Livewires! WOW!

Can you tell me how your protectant feels when u touch it? Is it oily? There are several protectants I see from the the webpage which one did you use?

Couldn't find Armorall protectant so bought one from Lexol. It's called Vinylex Protectant, it specialy formulated to clean and protect vinyl, rubber and plastic. when I apply it onto my cable it does the opposite from softening it!!! It gives the cable a layer of grease coating and it hardens them further!!!! I quickily wash it off but its too late, my not so soft cables started to have little gaps!!! Sob.... counting down on them to fully split...

Guys out there who wants to clean your cables, make sure u put that whatever protectant on your hand n feel it, if its greasy, DO NOT USE IT.

omg shocking.gif do u actually use the lenox vinylex protectant for yur cables?
that is most damaging liquid for yur cables and it is not for cables
it actually add a thickening agent to yur cable and thus making it more harder
anyway headfi only recommends only armorall protectant or olive oil only for cables only
this is pic of my armorall protectant which doesnt have greasy formula and which can wipe off by using tissue paper as well

oh?! so the protectant I bought has actually been discussed before and its bad?! man i didn't know! sad.gif
The thing is, if its oil from our body that cracks the cable, then why do we want to apply greasy product on the cables again? wouldn't it accelerates the hardening process?
Anyway, I'll try out Armorall again since i got nothing to lose now... sigh... >_<

not for my armorall
our body sweats made from salt and all toxic that discard from our body that y is damaging to cables salt and wire doesnt mix together and not to mention heat from our body as well...
it uses a non chemical formula for it and doesnt cause plasticization and harden the cord
it is non greasy formula and works well for my cables
make it shine like brand new and protect from uva and uvb damage

hello all.

i have a few questions.
does the bijou level 3 have more base than x3i?
how does the build quality so far?
is it still fragile?

do we need to burn it same as x3i to achieve optimum SQ

thanks.

Bijou3 has a lot of bass. IIRC, it is more bassy than X3i - and perhaps too bassy for its own good. Though I haven't heard Bijou2, I read that it has a more controlled and refined bass. You might want to pay attention to it as well. As for build quality, it has been improved vastly and pretty solid now. You do need to burn it in for at least 50 hrs.

lol just post a review of it clieo afterall they all wan to know how it is compare to shure se530, triple hi fi pro 10 and ie 8
imo i think it way better shure se530 mind me i not saying i dont like shure 530 afterall i got it with me sweat.gif
better resistant cables than the crackling shure cables, improved mids and not so weightly lows compare to shure 530 and a bit exp than it 399 usd 19usd to 380 for shure se530
highly recommendable if u looking for shure se530 without dark sound signature then W3 is for u a bit brighter than shure not so much or so little thumbup.gif
btw i hope shures also noticed that w3 is gaining upon it rite now brows.gif

thanks ClieOS for ur info
so the bass for bijou level 3 is overrated?
does it work best with rock genre kind of music?
say avenged sevenfold?

how bout UE Super.fi3 Studio, shure se110, shure scl2, cx500?
does it compete with mylar? or they r in another level?

do all iem need burning or just particular ones?

thanks in advance!

As for the bijou3 i think its pretty ok for rock music.. More bass the better.. biggrin.gif But details sure suffer..
UE Super.fi3 Studio, shure se110, shure scl2, cx500 i would say a notch above mylar.. Price wise they are already above mylar..

But it all depends on individual preference.. Take all reviews with a pinch of salt..

Dynamic driver do need burn in but it depends on diff IEM coz they have diff burn in time...

BA driver do not need burn in i suppose but i think some burn in is required to loosen up the BA driver.. hmm.gif

Haha.. Juz get the 1 with the sound signature u like..

For me the UM2 sound signature is nice for me plus the design and the braided and soft cable is definately a plus.. thumbup.gif

Headphones also need burn in.. Basically what burn in does is it makes the diaphragm more elastic so it can produce more range of frequencies thus making the earphone/headphone sounds better.. Correct me if im wrong.. biggrin.gif Like i said, diff brand have diff burn in time.. best to ask those who used the particular brand b4..

UM2 is more on the bassy side.. Love the bass... Great punch.. thumbup.gif Details do suffer slightly but not much.. The highs is abit high for my liking making it abit harsh..
Seperation of instruments is good.. Took me 2-3days to really get used to the warm signature..

To me the positive out weight the negative by alot so no regrets getting it.. Great IEM to have i muz say.. Dual driver IEM already sounds this good.. Can't imagine triple 3 way drivers.. drool.gif

Can't imagine triple 3 way drivers..  drool.gif
*
woa..u must be really satisfied with ur UM2 eh?
thanks a lot for ur detailed description bro! really appreciate it biggrin.gif

may i asked how much n where did u get it?
kinda tempting oso base on ur opinion
sigh...

as u said..cant imagine how triple 3 way drivers would sound...
sigh again...

I already added the info into the original thread on Head-fi, but forgot to change it here. Will update when I am more free.

BTW, icyfawkes, thanks for the offer, but it is not as easy as I'll like it to be (see PM) thus I can't accept your generosity. I am sure I'll be sorry for this. In any case, I want to thank you again for the kindness.

So if i want to buy
Head-Direct’s RE2

Just check wallabies and other bulk, but no one is selling..

The only option is to buy from Ebay right? I saw one selling @ US99 not sure about the shipment rate yet...

All shipping for headphone is free since two months ago, IIRC. Head-Direct is a Head-fi.org sponsor and I know the owner (Nankai @ Head-fi) quite well even though I never met him personally. In fact, I just recently bought a set of filter from him and it is currently on route to me, not to mention I received RE0 about a month ago. His website might be a bit outdated but the service is good.

Thanks for your info! Nice review there... But those high-end IEMs like UE one... really expensive (for my status now...)...
Maybe next time when i earn a few 10k bucks per month den will buy audiophile stage iems drool.gif

I thought ER4P is more than RM500 already? You won't find anything better than ER4P for your budget. IMO, the best recommendation I can give in that price range are either Phonak Audeo or FutureSonics Atrio M5 (both excluding shipping, etc). However, I doubt they will be upgrade, more like sidestepping.

SF3 is about the same level as ER6i, but with less detail and warmer, bassier, more versatile/adaptive sound signature. By itself, SF3 is quite a good choice as entry level IEM. But it will still come short in comparison of ER4P. If you get SF3, it will sound quite different from ER4P, but don't expect it to be an upgrade. Personally, I'll invest my money toward a good portable amp to better drive the ER4.

This is my first post.

ClieOS, Great works!! You are very lucky to have all that IEMs smile.gif Ihope you can review some more IEMs. My recommendation is Nuforce NE-7m, which to my ears, it is cery good, from low bass to high with no harsh sibilance detected. But it will perfect if it has some more warmness and bigger soundstage. But it's performance is very good for price USD49 + USD11 (delivery) (Amazon).

I am not an audiophile anymore smile.gif, but good sound is always GOOD. I think today's IEMs can produce a very good sound quality (SQ) and comparable to high end headphones.

My current listening setup:
Laptop (Any audio format) -USB-> Nuforce Icon Mobile USB-DAC --> Nuforce NE-7m IEM (standard medium sized silicone tip).

TQ.

Not just 'some said', but it isn't just 'rebadge' either.

Foster is one of the world largest OEM. Among some of the things they make are headphones (and a lot of other audio equipments). They customers includes (for what I know) Sony, Audio-Technica, Bang & Olufsen, Sharp, Panasonic, Apple (as in iBud), Sennheiser, Denon, AKG... the list goes on. Foster will customize any of their headphone to suit customer's need, and EP630 and CX300 are one of those case. So although they both look the same, they don't sound alike - because Creative and Sennheiser have requested Foster to tune the IEM to their own specification. In fact, if you have enough money to spend, Foster will custom make your own brand of headphone and ship them to you.

O_O ... PL30 scored quite high.

Anyways ClieOS, what happened to Koss ksc75? Does it even have a chance to fair against the PL30 or the EP630?

For my own preference, I will take KSC75 over PL30 and definitely over EP-630. The problem with PL30 is I can't get a good seal for long enough time, thus it becomes pretty useless for me as portable 'phone. In fact, I'll rather settle with the lesser PL20 or PL11 as both fit much better in my ears. I don't use clip-on much these days so I have no interest on reviewing KSC75. Plus, it has been around for way too long so you can easily find tons of review via google.

Ksc75 is clip-type earphone whereas Ep630 is IEM, if you wish to hv longer playback time on ur mp3 player, I think EP630 is better.

P/S: I was wondering in between KSC75 and Razer m250, which one better? I know razer is gaming accessories but I'm just curious. hmm.gif

AFAIK, there is nothing in ON3 price range (~RM70) besides the typical Sony and Panasonic, and I prefer ON3 over almost all of them.

Haven't heard DJ100 yet, so I can't really tell which is better. Then again, I haven't heard of any good low end Panasonic pr Sony so a long time now, so I am just going to make a big assumption and avoid them.

AD700 is great. If you can, just get one.

Few days ago I was scouting around the music and audio accessories section and I came across this JBL reference 220 at a very intriguing price so I decided to buy one for using at home with my lappy. Okay, so the item reached me just now from the seller tongue.gif I took it out from the box and first glance at the IEM gave me a nostalgic appearance, the Klipsch Custom-3 as the building material of the wire of this JBL 220 resembles the Klipsch Custom-3 cable, the cable is thicker than the C3 cable though, results in the weight heavier than the C3 one. Some say this kinda of wires are not durable and easily spoiled but so far all my IEM doesn't face this kind of prob so it doesn't bother me much. The IEM is wear in the normal style, not over the ear type and it seems to hv a very bad microphonic(when you rub the wire, you can hear the noise very loud) I picked the largest silicone ear tips( as I noticed that the largest ear tips always fit the best for me regardless it's the Shure, Klipsch, or Sennheiser) and I stuff the IEM into my ears. To my surprise, the IEM conferred very gd isolation, way better than the isolation of IE8, almost as gd as the seal of Klipsch Custom-3 if not better. Then I try to play some songs on my iPod touch, to my utter surprise, the SQ of this IEM has darn gd SQ for it's price. The bass of this IEM is almost like 75% of the IE8 bass(at half knob), bass definitely stronger than the Creative EP630 and Shure SCL2/E2G/SE102, about the same as the C3 bass if not stronger. Clarity/treble wise, this IEM clarity is really gd, again definitely better than the EP630 and Shure SCL2 one, a little bit inferior compared to the C3 one though. How about the soundstage? I've to say that the soundstage is not bad, the instrumental separation is not as gd as the one of C3 and IE8. How about the price? It's retailed at USD 99~RM300++ but Lipfvng is selling at only RM66( mine is purchased from forumer so it's cheaper than that blush.gif ) Anyway, this is really a gd IEM to go for if you're on tight budget, you can use the Fiio E5 to boost the bass and soundstage(not sure whether it works or not though as I ady sold my E5 xD) just my little opinion about the IEM notworthy.gif

Haha, it's just an expression , steal or steel doesn't really matter as long as you know what I mean tongue.gif He might not own the IE8 himself, but wait, halt and check his audio gears... you'll be shocking.gif

There is no right or wrong opinion as long as you are honest (and that is the most important thing). Everyone hears and values things differently, so one shouldn't totally rely a single person's opinion.

Compare to many other forumers, I don't really have that impressive of an audio rig. I do have a few IEM, but they can't make up a rig by themselves.

Yup, that's why I wrote my own short reviews regarding the JBL since I can't really find much reviews about it. Anyway, here's my conclusion about the ranking of the IEMs according to my own preference.

1st place~Sennheiser IE8: Wide soundstage , deep bass with high clarity, low microphonic effect due to soft wire material, noise isolation 60-70%. Warm sound signature.

2nd place~Klipsch Custom-3: Mediocre soundstage and bass, high clarity, has microphonic issue but not that obvious as the hook helps reduce it to min, noise isolation 70-80%. Bright and clear sound signature.

3rd place~ JBL reference 220: soundstage on par of the C3, bass of 60-70% of that of IE8 tweaked to half knob, clarity not as gd as both IE8 and C3 yet pretty gd, microphonic effect pretty obvious( by rubbing slightly one can hear the noise), noise isolation 70-80%. Sound signature in between bright and warm.

4th place~ Shure E2G/SCL2/SE102: soundstage not bad, bass kinda weak(improve with Fiio E5 pairing), clarity inferior to JBL reference 220 but better than Creative EP-630, microphonic issue is conspicuous even though it's over the ear type, yet slightly better than the JBL 220, noise isolation 60-75%. Bright sound signature.

5th place~ Creative Ep-630: soundstage so so only, strong bass but clarity kinda low, sound muffled, noise isolation not as gd as the Shure and JBL. Warm sound signature.

Just my opinion on the IEM I have smile.gif

Yeah, the JBL 220 microphonics was pretty bad, which is why I sold it to you biggrin.gif I needed a spare IEM for cycling/jogging, so obviously JBL220 is out.....

The replacement, Soundmagic PL-11, is great. Slightly less bass, but still a good sound overall, and much less microphonics smile.gif

Now I need my Atrios to arrive, then I'll retire.....until the next best thing comes around...... tongue.gif

Haha yea, but consider the price and the SQ, can't ask much from it I guess. If you're looking for IEM that's suitable for sports, I think the Klipsch custom series would be a better choice. thumbup.gif

Oh my, maybe i should try and get one. I went for PL20 the last time.

It can get too airy for my taste sumtimes. Have to use E5 if i want more bass.

“Final Remark: In case you wonder: No, NE-7M isn't rebranded PL11 or X3. It is a class (or two) above those IEM. For the low price, NE-7M has fantastic price / performance ratio, just two things: 1) The included eartips couldn't match up with the IEM's sound quality and should be replaced. 2) You might not be able to use it as headset if you are not using iPhone. I tried it with my Sony Ericsson cellphone with no luck. Once you look pass those two minor imperfection, NE-7M could just be some of the best $50 you can ever spend on IEM.”

Wow... Is the plug compatible with conventional mp3 players? Can use the call answer device for VOIP chatting? Can get it locally in Malaysia?

I don't think the NE7M is available in Malaysia. And it's a bit risky to buy since it's not guaranteed to work unless you have an iPhone.

When I get my Atrio, I can compare how far it is above the PL11 tongue.gif

Under this perspective I own only two IEMs that I find thoroughly enjoyable: the IE8 and the FX500. I won't go into detail with the IE8, it's being analyzed to death on this forum, for me it is simply THE BEST. I know there is that midbass hump and I can hear it too, but it don't bother me and if I drive them out of the Nuforce Icon it's gone.

The Shure SE530 is certainly a great IEM and has maybe better detail than the IE8, but the bass is somewhat lifeless and the smallish soundstage limits my listening pleasure. Comfort is also not the best.

The X10 can also sound great (though the highs are a bit too much rolled off for my taste). But every tip besides olives gives me hellish microphonics and I find myself fiddling with tips more than I enjoy. Lastly the soundstage is not very wide unless worn over the ears, which they are clearly not intended to.

The Atrio M5 is king of bass allright, but then again the highs are nothing to write home about. The soundstage is no better than the X10's and I've become rather touchy about that "in the head sound" since I own the IE8.

That's where the FX500 steps in and IMO it does everything almost as good as the IE8. It has great and even SQ across the whole spectrum, bass is very quick and punchy, mids and highs are great. Soundstage is second best to the IE8, wide and airy, even isolation is surprisingly good for an open IEM. Like I said before, I greatly enjoy the FX500 and can't find a single fault with it. Extracted from Head-Fi directly.

When ppl said lack in mids, mid bass, lack in highs, what does that mean actually?

Oh NE-7M totally will work as a headphone, but not always as a headset (aka headphone w/ mic).

You can still use it as a normal IEM if the mic didn't work, and for the price, it is totally worth it. As far as I know, there is no local NuForce dealer. The official distributor is in Singapore, but you can still order it from Amazon (or NuForce website) and they will ship to Malaysia, but shipping fee is a bit expensive. The Singapore price is around SG$90 IIRC.

It’s an expression to describe someone who is very, very rich.

Which came another expression, dirty poor, who are very, very poor.

From there you can see that they have something in common, they're both not clean.

Get it? Filthy and dirty pretty much mean the same thing.

The quoted price reflected the lowest reasonable price to be expected from an online dealer at the time of the review, obviously price will go up and down with the market. Here are two that are still relatively cheap, and with free (though slow) shipping:

MP4 Nation - $22.50
FocalPrice - $23.50

You should also consider PL-21 as well, which is $21 on FocalPrice. In many way I like PL-21 over PL-30. The review of PL-21 is going to be posted later next week.

I see, thanks for the information. Yea now I am between PL21 and PL30, but the design of PL21 is kinda ordinary compare to PL30, and PL30 comes with the hardcase instead of PL20's pouch. Can PL30 be used like normal earphone? I mean no need to go behind the ears.

Mind briefing me the way you like PL21 first?? Cause if the price of these phones in states is not very much cheaper than Malaysia, then I might get it here before I leave to states.

By the way, do you know any else online store in US selling variety brands of earphones, headphones, and speaker??

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Added on December 14, 2009, 5:11 pmJust read some of your replies, you said that PL30's fitting is not as good as PL21/PL20/PL11, hmmm fitting is an issue that I concern as well...

Any reviews for Sennheiser IE8? Is it better or worse than Shure SE530 and UE TF10Pro?

PL21 is more like the hybrid of PL20 + PL11. It is fairly detail, but not quite as analytical as PL30. It has some very deep bass, but not as much in quantity as PL11. Personally I like it better than all the other SoundMAGIC I have tried so far, expect for PL50 of course. No hardcase is a minus, but at least there is a soft pouch. All and all, it is the most balanced of all the dynamic IEM SoundMAGIC made so far. PL30 really earn no love from me, since getting it to stay in my ears has never been successful.

I have auditioned IE8, but didn't buy it due to the high regional price (it's much cheaper in EU!). From whatever brief impression I have, I'll say it is on the same class as SE530 and TF10, just different in sound signature.
