Hi,
I started using a Sun Dry recently.
However I'm not sure what is the correct way to store my lenses.
Is it better to store it standing up (Front Element facing downwards - with lense cap of course)
Or is it better to lie it on its sides?

I had been storing the lenses standing up until i got the cabinet, which comes with a foam/sponge piece of something... which looks like its meant to support lenses on its side - hence the question now.

I always assumed its better to stand it up...
Will keeping the lens on its side too long without rotating it cause the lens elements inside the lens to shift from its axis (downwards)?

Nah it wouldn't, there are spacers inside in between each element. I think I have that same dry cabinet! The foam things made me more eager to buy it heh.

There are however cases where they warn against the Canon 50mm F1.4 USM being stored front-element down would damage the focus motor. (My interpretation of "standing up" is lens cap up, back cap down.) Thus on this principle alone, stick them front elements up!

it depends for me...
for my longer lenses...i lay them sideways...
for the shorter one...it's standing up...front cap up...=)
it actually depends oso on how big ur dry cabinet is...
if its small u might not be able to stand up some long lenses...

All my lens is placed front cap up. However, I've seen some of the camera shops putting lens front cap down instead.
I don't put them on their sides because they takes up more space in that way. tongue.gif

I just campak the lenses in random directions and place them in random locations.

If after paying so much for the damned things and they can't stand me putting them upwards, downwards or in whatever position i like, it must be a shitty lense.

Do you have dry cabinet to store them?

Well, I guess for hobbyist, you need dry cabinet and properly store the lenses as you don't use it everyday everytime.

For me, I can't store them upright as the cabinet is too small and all my lenses are giants except my fisheye.

Do we have to detach the lens from the camera when we are not using it?

The answer is obvious, sleeping horinzontal is the best if it is possible. cool2.gif

It is one of the way to 'minimise' fungus staying on the glasses elements. cool2.gif

I just keep mine in their original boxes. I don't have a dry box either and neither can i keep them on my desk. Kind of afraid someone would come in and fool around with them. Going to get a camera bag once i get my wages for this month.

I keep the 14-45 on the E-500 so i've never found a reason to detach it. And i barely use the 40-150mm right now so it's stored in the original box.

I always keep my lenses standing front elements up unless it is attached to my cam when it would be placed front elements down in my bag. But then again I only have 3 lenses and one is always on cam while one is currently in cold storage.

You're one of the most carefree photographer I ever knew. Hehe.. The "campak-ing" and the spitting on mirror. You're the one who made me relieved since you showed that our cameras can take our abuses. tongue.gif

I don't have a dry cabinet. I shoot almost everyday everywhere. Especially these few days, the places that I've been shooting is extremely hot and sunny. I doubt I can live under such condition, and so I guess those fungus can't too. So far none of my lens have fungus yet. laugh.gif

If dry cabinet = place where i chuck my shirts and underpants, then yes, i have a dry cabinet.

I just put my stuff where it's convenient and isn't easily dropped.

I'm just not into the whole dry cabinet thing. Best i'll do is chuck my stuff inside my bag other than that i keep my gear easy to access and close at hand.

Haha, except for my housemate, no one really twiddles with my stuff. Actually i've killed more of my own stuff than anyone else. When bored i take out my tele lenses and swish them around pretending they're huge penis like spaceships in a huge hardon battle for galatic supremacy.....now that's what i call an imagination man.

The 70-200 2.8L IS with extender is the battlecruiser, it shoots 1000 MegaPEWs of lazors per second and i have named it DOOMCOCK.
