currently i plan to buy a wireless router for gaming and both torrenting.. but i don't know which 1 to choose between these 2 router. WRT54GL seems better because i seems have more ram than wrt54g and more expensive as well. but i don't know how the real performance does. Currently wrt54g version 7 or 8 i don't know which version is available in lowyat and wrt54gl is available for version 1.1. i don,'t think i will flash it with third party firmware. all i need is a good performance wireless router. so i need some adviceses here.... or does anyone have better suggestion than these 2 router which is most likely below RM200 also welcome. thank you. notworthy.gif

correct me if i mention anything wrong also.. notworthy.gif

Since you are into Torrenting and Online gaming and you want to get this router , you'll have to Use a 3rd party firmware to get the optimal performance for both. Now I am fully enjoying my streamyx + this modem. The QoS is superb. I can play games such as Jedi Knights II and torrent at the same time (~20-30 Kilobytes/sec) and my latency for JK II is around ~130ms to 200 ms (if i turn torrent off i'll be getting around 110ms to 180ms). Without the 3rd party frimware the router , nevertheless is a joke. You'll have to use a 3rd party firmware for it. The Linksys WRT54G v7/v8 doesn't do that well. If you want to invest on a good router then go for WRT54GL. I think there is a Buffalo router which is cheaper and allows you to flash into 3rd party firmware. So my advice is grab WRT54GL and flash it to DD-WRT/Tomato and you'll be enjoying torrenting and online gaming tongue.gif

Oo, will flashing 3rd party firmware void the warranty?

Yes it will void the warranty. I even opened the router and installed a 3rd party firmware. But then if you flash back to linksys firmware and send them for RMA it shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure you don't open the router and install a heatsink.

Even if something went wrong there are ways to recover it tongue.gif

im currently happy with the tomato firmware.
its QoS is better than ddwrt for me.
but then it is just me, you got to try it out yourself...
just make sure you use the cable to flash the firmware, dont ever try flashing via wireless....

it is looking as complicated but actually you need to set some few setting only....
if you are going for ddwrt then just use the micro version, it is enough for normal user...

I am using Tomato Firmware as well. Tomato's QoS is the best QoS that you can get for WRT54G series. Its superb. For starters I would say go for DD-WRT and then from there you'll able to sort it out which one you want tongue.gif

if your budget thight then get wrt54g else GL version. Since you've mention why not u try first on the default firmware instead of using the 3rd party. if you've no problem with the current firmware then stay with it. gd luck.

Yes , the stock firmware isn't that great when it comes to P2P. You'lll see the difference. Heck , I've seen people who said to me "oMG , this is going to screw up my router". The next minute they are saying "Thanks man, it really made my router powerful".

I was previously using WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware, damn nice. smile.gif the features were so rich and way better than Linksys' default system.

however my WRT54G got fried by TNB, but anyway I got the WRT54GL now and haven't flashed it since. biggrin.gif

my take on this is that flash it only when you're not satisfied.

I bricked my old WRT54GS V1.1 . Regretted it as they don't produce any more of WRT54GS with 32MB of RAM !

Meaning for a normal user WRT54G is just as good as WRT54GL? Same signal strength for both?

yeah would say the wrt54gl is currently best la ... unless u bring out those N ones which cost almost 2.5 times more ... and most importantly the firmware is not customizable ...
