no, you are. you're taking his statement out of context altogether.
Drums is an item that should not affect your dps cycle, as it only consumes a 1 sec GCD. Like haste pots.

ty lucifer. yes the thread has been a bible to me for quite some time now. but wouldnt it be terribly wasteful to put another shaman in your full melee group? a resto or ele shaman could be better utilised in a caster group, or even tank group for the matter.

considering totems only have a gcd, yes, i totem twist wf/goa usually about every 8 seconds (wf totem buff is 10 secs, and lasts even after the totem itself is removed).

yeah, i was a blacksmith too =/. went LW as we progressed through swp. my melee grp is kinda the main dpsers for the raid, with everyone going above 2k - 2.2k (1 dbl glaives rogue, war with MH glaive, rogue with MH glaive, and another rogue/MS war), subbing each other out for certain fights. all the rogues went LW, so with me going LW its really a no brainer. perma drummed grps = DPS.

and yes, itemization. q.q . Nuff said.

yeah, i have the 5/5 imp totems on resto side (important, lol) JoW is important, and one of the regular pallies ALWAYS does JoW on fights. on fights where he cant, i skip the earth shock altogether, twist and flameshock every 12 secs. SR + mana pots should last you around 5 minutes. (popping SR at near 0 mana bar)

did this on teron, clocked in 1900+ dps as i recall.

you can actually sub in the other shaman, BL, and sub him out during the fight. BL will stay on the party he BL'ed. but i think you need a raid addon for this (oRa2 if im not mistaken).

yes, its kinda hard to totem twist at the beginning. Going into BT, i didnt do that as dps wasnt always a factor. I was overlooked in the dps department because of the hybrid nature of shamans, people dont expect you to do dps anyways. come swp, where lack of dps can actually break your raids sorta "forced" me to. (i was thinking about it but, slacking in raids lol). turned out pretty well. DPS for my group increased significantly, and BT encounters suddenly became too damn easy. I suggest you go to the EJ forums and find the macro to totem twist, and try it out. (sorry cant remember it, quite complicated =/)
