Welcome everyone....

Freshwater stingray are becoming the most upmost pet to be kept!!!
But there is still alot of hidden secret for rearing freshwater stingray....
The can be very active today but for no reason they die the next day....
Due to the fish species, some of the medicine that we normally use to aids fishes doesnt mean it is suitable for this freshwater stingray!! worst of all, it will die immediately if wrong medicine are used.

So, please share your experiences or show off what you learn from stingray here!!!!
hAVe fuN!

Stephen Robert Irwin (February 22, 1962 – September 4, 2006), known simply as Steve Irwin and nicknamed "The Crocodile Hunter", was an iconic Australian television personality, wildlife expert, and conservationist. He achieved world-wide fame from the television program The Crocodile Hunter, an internationally broadcast wildlife documentary series co-hosted with his wife Terri Irwin. Together, they also co-owned and operated Australia Zoo, founded by his parents in Beerwah, Queensland. He died in 2006 after his chest was fatally pierced by a stingray barb while filming in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. - wikipedia.

motoro is the most basic or so called stingray for beginner....it is more easier to rare compare to other type of stingray...... for that size of motoro stingray, especially its a female....it will cost alot more expensive than the male.....it cost rm1k and above.....for a male at that size...u can get it below rm1k.....
motoro baby or small motoro is cost about rm300 for a male and rm380 for a female.....so u can roughly see the idea what the price about......
there are few kind of stingray you can get in malaysia......they are namely:-
motoro
pearl
henlei
tiger
leopoldi
& etc......

yea...there quite a number of breeder around the country of malaysia....
but most of them are still small....or some sort other home breeder.....
they take it as an hobby rather than business....

hard or not to rare this fish is realli depend on the person....
some might find it easy but some are not....
for me 50-50....
i did success in keeping a few rays...but i also experience of losing alot of money investting in this rays...
so...everything come with an experience....n an experience comes with a pay.....

look at the stomach, they do hav egg yolk in the body....
the egg yolk take about 1 week to disolve.....
within that period of time, the stingray can survive without feeding
but anyhow, as stingray eat like pig, they will eat anything that around them....smile.gif
giv comment if im wrong.... cuz that what i got to know about.....
mayb someone out there are more experience...

is a 4 feet tank size big enough to conduct captive breeding of stingray?
and another thing is most stingray are wild collected from rivers such as Amazon, am i right to say captive bred stingrays are more suitable and adaptive in aquariums & water composition?

i have read it before in books, that freshwater stingray have ancestry decent from their saltwater cousins. During the earth continental drift (tectonic drift) movement of the earth continents, has causing sub-divided oceans and rivers are formed from it, and water gradually looses it salinity level in waters further inland farther away from the ocean, some stingrays are trapped and become adapted to freshwater rivers over thousands of years in its evolution and survival capability. Some can even survive in brackish water, the area which the river meets the sea. Research has findings shows that bacteria that live in the digestive system of a freshwater stingray are the same ones that are found in those stingrays that live in sea water.

Guess that will answer why freshwater stingrays are sensitive to changes in the water in terms of salinity and chemicals.

Hi blitzboy, you r absolutely correct...what u say i true....
dats y sometime u will see ppl saying that having a stingray or raring a stingray is difficult while some say no....
there are few tactics or secret recipe that we need to know....
i learn from mistake....i have lost alot of money in this stingray, but i also do learn alot of thing.....
im glad that you brought up this issue....
1st of all, stingray are definitely from amazon which is Brazil, Peru, Mexico and etc.....
4year ago, when i rare this stingray, most of the people have failed so do i, but some ppl survive ....
1 have a bunch of fren rare this stingray 4 years ago...so we learn from here n there to find out the reason
4 years ago, our main source are from brazil, so when the ray's arrive malaysia, they need times to get use to our malaysia waterquality and environment......sme survive some no....
after these time we have learn n keep it survive, we manage to captive breed it...
for now, if you wan to buy a stingray from a LFS, the most important Question that you need to ask the LFS is where the ray's come from.....
you need to very sure where the ray's come from, if it s not captive breed then think twice...if captive breed, then the chances of survival is higher..
but if the LFS say import from somewhere else or he brought from someone who import from somewhere else....then becareful...
beside this, when u deicde to buy the ray's... ask the LFS to feed the ray....to check whether they eat or not....is they eat...then add another point in ur buying chances.....
many other thing that you need to look into before you buy a ray.....
will put in more information sooon!!!

nice to meet u blitzboy

It's not a good sign if you see your rays breath like this....
Few problem might have cause this..
Water condition, ammonia level too high
Worst if the rays already being affected with virus internally....

Hi there nice ray you have, how do you tell the differences between the gender of ray? Male and female physical differences ??

i am considering keeping rays, and looking for those captive bred ones. If you manage to breed them i don't mind to buy a male and female sting ray from you. I think a 4 feet tank would be sufficient to breed them. I am from subang jaya. LOL.

you mean sting ray do attack when you handle it? you mean it bites your fingers?

the sting ray that killed steve is the big one, and live in sea water.
if I am not mistaken the largest of all stingray is the manta ray and grow up to 5 - 6 meters in wing span.
the size is very big and so wide the way it swims it's like flying or gliding through water.

biggrin.gif Hi All,
I am a new member from India. I am an aquarium hobbyist. I want to know few things about fresh water sting rays. I have been keeping one sting ray for almost 6 months. He ( or she !) is doing well. Last week I got one more.

Can any body help me to identify these two rays. I am feeding them with pealed prones, nothing else is acceptable for them. Is there any other food which is accepted by sting rays. What all things that I have to take care to provide them a good enviornment and health.

Regards

Ajay

wow....finally there some feedback coming in..thankz everyone!!!!
motoro is the most basic or so called stingray for beginner....it is more easier to rare compare to other type of stingray...... for that size of motoro stingray, especially its a female....it will cost alot more expensive than the male.....it cost rm1k and above.....for a male at that size...u can get it below rm1k.....
motoro baby or small motoro is cost about rm300 for a male and rm380 for a female.....so u can roughly see the idea what the price about......
there are few kind of stingray you can get in malaysia......they are namely:-
motoro
pearl
henlei
tiger
leopoldi
& etc......
crocodile hunter is killed by a wild stingray and its a salted version of stingray.....
this stingray is freshwater.....anyway, its the same......jus that this is freshwater another is saltwater version...
Will update more pic about this freshwater stingray sooN!!!

I have a good friend in Malaysia, his name is Mr.Jason of Flower horn consortium.I had purchased flower horns and discus from him last year. Do you know him ? Regarding the price for Leopoldi, Is it RM 20000?!!!.

Hi,
Ornamental fish import is not allowed in India. But if you hand carry one or two fishes when you come from abroad normally customs wont trouble you but some times they seize that also. There are some carriers who brings all sorts of ornamental fishes from Singapore and there are some traders who purchases it from them and sell it to the local shops.

I got both the rays like that. Getting rare varieties in Indian market is very very difficult. Carriers bring only items that can be sold immedietly.

Being an expert in Sting ray could you pls help me out to provide my sting rays a better enviornment in the tank. I am a begginer in Sting ray.I have the following doubts,I hope you will clarify those.

1) How big the aquarium should be ( They are 4-5" in diameter ),What type of subsrate is suitable, and what type of filteration is ideal.

2) What all feeds do they take.(At present I am feeding them with only peeled prowns, they are not taking any thing else)

3) Is it possible to diferentiate the sex at this size.

I hope you will not hesitate to give your advice.

Thank you

Regards

Ajay

Ajay, i would try my best to answer as much as i know from what i learn.....im not a pro yet...still a student learning about the nature of this freshwater stingray....so i hope every1 out there can share their experience here....n correct me if im wrong....smile.gif

the rule for keeping stingray is , keep it in a tank as big as possible....rays like big tank....for example like yours, a 4 feet tank would be enough at this moment...but will need a bigger one when they grow bigger....
a tank dats big as 6 x 3 x 3 would probably able to keep 4 adult stingray......

foods that they take would be shrimp, live fish, earth worm ....etc.....more to things that is soft or not too hard as well as things that can be fit in its mouth!.....so if you are thinking to comm tank ur stingrays with other fish, try to get the fish that not easily fit into rays mouth as they will clean up everything dat the tank have....

the sex diffenrentiation can be found in this thread somewhere in the pages 2....i have post up the topic on how to differentiate the sex there....wink.gif
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=18054337

anyway, im not hesitate to share!! i love sharing!!...smile.gif

by the way, nice to know u n get some new info that india is hard to get ornamental fish...wat a sad thing....
any reason that the govenrment do not allow ornamental fish to be import to india???

Hi
Thank you so much for your reply.I have checked the link which tells about deferentiating sex of sting rays.Regading the govt restriction on import.govt of India has included these items in restricted species category. If somebody wants to bring some fishes they have to get a special permit from DGFT ( Director general of foreign trade) and its a Herculian task. You have to provide a huge documents including the photos of fishes at different ages, even then there is no gurentee that you will be permitted.Just imagin the compersome procedures involved to get a fish, that is why no body is trying to import the fish to India, rather they smuggle it.

Please let me know what will be the cost of a Chilly red arowana there (size- 6").It should be taged and guarenteed for color.

Hi
Why I said guarantee is that, I have seen big Red arowans,18-20"size( There will be a light red color on the fins, nothing else) purchased by people by spending good amount for a small one (4-5"). From the LFS you will get certificate with tag no and everything but once they grow up ,you cant find any red coloration on the body inspite giving good food and water condition. So I have a strong feeling that what we get here is not an A grade(Best quality)Arowanas, the reason is very simple since the carriers are bringing it,they do not take a chance by spending lot of money on a juvanile red arowanas as there is no guarentee that they they can come out of the Airport, without being caught, with the fish.

Regarding my Sting ray,I paid aproximately US $ 140 ( I do not know the conversion rate for RM,that is why I mentioned in dollors) for each (3.5-4"dia). that too after waiting for two months after placing an order with a bigger wholesaler who normally gets the fishes from the carriers. As I mentioned early these carriers normally do not bring sting rays and some african cichlids which are not fast moving in the trade, unless there is a special order for that variety.

So I do not know whether I have paid a lot more than the price in Malaysia. Regarding the sex,one guy is a male today I checked it when he was climbing the walls of the aquarium the other one was always on the bottom so I could not check it. Pls let me know the price of same size Sting ray at Malaysia.(If possible pls convert it in to US $)

Ajay

oohh...ur stingrays is around that price for selling in LFS of Malaysia....so, not to worry that you bought too expensive!...wink.gif
by the way, for arowana, in order for breeders/distributer/ etc...they definitely require a tag on the arowana..we could not simply export the fish out of the country without a tag on the aro...because arowana is control under CITES...
from what you said n what i read thru, you might be right but you might be wrong too....
for example, if you bought that arowana (let say 4years ago), then you might be wrong, because red arowana onli will start develop it potential colour when it reach the matured/old age....but during this time, due to better quality and special care, red aro tend to start developing it colour when it is still young....BUT BUT BUT....red arowana realli do need skill....it depend on what you feed them, how your tank structure, your water condition and so on.....so, good luck!...even me myself sometime do face prob like ppl out there where the red arowana doesnt look great like others ppl arowana.....smile.gif

im looking to get more higher quality stingray now.....plaaning to go into getting marble stingray and SP

Its normal ajay, some of my stingray doesnt eat prawn but onli fishes.....mayb its their appetite problem....u can train it by not given them food for 1 or 2 day, then try with the new food that you wanted them to eat....but make sure do not over starve ur rays......in order to make this food eating changes, make sure ur ray is healthy and look fat.....because its dangerous to train n starved and unhealthy stingray....

Normally a stingray can take about 8 to 12months in order to reach 8" diameter....depend on the ray itself....

Hi, One of my sting rays is not taking any food.He used to take prawns or earth worms.but for the last two days he is not showing any interest to food.Today when I gave him small peices of earth worms he is trying to eat it but after chewing it for long time he spited it out. What could be the reason ? What should I do ? Some times he is not laying flat on the bottom instead like an arch ( Without touching the bottom of its body fully on the floor ). Please help me ....

If not laying flat most of the time is water condition not good or some infection ...etc

If that occur most of the time they will eat less or reject food altogather !!

Are there any rashes ( red in particular on the underside ) discolouration ( almost white on surface ) are signs to look out for !!

They are scaleless creature so they dont respond well to most medication THUS prevention is best !!

A pic of your Ray in the said arch position is best !!

Bro Ajay, I think might be your water condition is not going well with the ray.....u should check ur water parameter....such as PH, NH3 and Nh4.....water condition is vy important for freshwater stingray....not flat on the bottom instead of looking like an arch??!! i hope its not wat we called "death curl"......if its a death curl, then its hard to safe it....so,hav a check on the water condition, and do water changes ....onli changes about 20-30% at once...not too much...and make sure ur water going into the tank is safe from hurting ur ray....smile.gif

Bro Ajay, I think might be your water condition is not going well with the ray.....u should check ur water parameter....such as PH, NH3 and Nh4.....water condition is vy important for freshwater stingray....not flat on the bottom instead of looking like an arch??!! i hope its not wat we called "death curl"......if its a death curl, then its hard to safe it....so,hav a check on the water condition, and do water changes ....onli changes about 20-30% at once...not too much...and make sure ur water going into the tank is safe from hurting ur ray....smile.gif
they dont fight with each other....but sometime will happen if more male fighting for 1 female when they are matured....smile.gif jus like human.....or else, they wont fight if they are feed well....
*
Hi,thank you for your advice. I changed the water the moment I noticed its behavioral changes.today also I changed nearly 30 %.But the other one ( Female )was very comfotrable at that time. I used to change 30 - 40 % water every week. Today also when I gave him prawns it took it in the mouth, chewed for some time then left it just like that... I do not know what is wrong with him...Any infections !! Does it require any antibiotic treatment ?

i dont wan to die like crocodile hunter... >_<

hmm....u wont die like crocodile hunter....smile.gif
freshwater stingray will not sting easily....onli when they feel unsecure...
and if get stung, no worries, keeping stingray rules - deep your stung-ed part into warm/hot water...then the poison would not spread....normally u will feel abit numb when u got stung...but evrything will be fine...go to doctor if u feel uncomfortable...smile.gif
u can train ur ray using hand feed....stingray can be hand feed....it the fun part of keeping a ray....and ray will be vy happi see-ing going near them ....(when u walk near the tank).....smile.gif
hav fun keeping stingray!!! if u dun hav...get one!!!

u r welcome....ajay, try not to water change too much at a time....20% is more than enough....if u feel not good enough...change it few hours later.... what kind of prawn u feed them? live prawn or market prawn??? live prawn would be a good food for rays.....infection?? mayb...mayb not....so, keep up wit water changes but not too much in a time....and feed them good stuff......rays doesnt goes well with soe medicine....no to antibiotic...so, do not simply apply medi onto ray....water changes would be good enough....hope everything will be fine

Hi, I am happy to inform that he is much better today, had a small peice of prawn and looks more comfortable today, thanks a lot for your advice. Regarding the prawn, what I feed is market prawn only. I am living in a state called Kerala , our western border is Arabian sea so we get lot of sea fish including prawns. So I peal small prawns and keep it in the freezer and give it for maximum one week not more that. Buying prawns daily is dificult for me that is why once in a week purchase.

Regards

Ajay

Hope by this time you must have received some new batches of Sting rays for SALE ....My ray is abosolutely allright now. The other one(female) is little lazy now !! but okey. Seems she is more comfortable with live feeder fish like gold fish babies, than my prawns.

Just wondering if there is such a sp of motoro that will stay small with a trade name of " Mini Motoro"
- Just how big will they grow to ?
- How fast do they grow ?

These mini motoro look exactly like the regular motoro but retail at smaller size ie 2.5 to 3 inch disc size !!

Thanks in advance for any replies

Mini motoro??? where u heard about this type of SP motoro???
i have never heard about these type of motoro yet...2.5inch rays is basiclly too small..it happen to the female motoro for giving birth to the ray too early....its hard to take care and mostly hard to survive....

a normal motoro will grow about 0.5- 1inch per month....depend on the rays itself....a motoro can grow up to 24inch in an adult size and even bigger sometime for female....

if u realli do come across any mini motoro, pls inform me...im curious to look at it...

I am in Sabah ! In fact I bought 2.2 but they only grew 1 inch for the past 6 or so months , while 2 regular one are already 9 - 10 inch
- Mini bought as 2.5 - 3 inch now average 3 - 4 + inch disc size
- Regular bought as 4 - 5 inch now average 9 - 10 inch !!

Now due to size difference I have to seperate them into 2 tanks !!
Runts of the litter maybe ??

Just bought some Marble but only males available !! SIGH

What are you feeding for these too small ones, Feeding my 4-5 inch itself is very difficult. they take only small prawns ( Pealed sea prawns ) that too one or two small one /day. Is it sufficient for their proper growth. Please let me know what are you feeding for your small ones and how frequently. So that i can also try that.

As mention before I feed them mince meat ie pork , beef , chicken ....etc beside seafood ie prawn , fish ...etc

There are many baby fish ( Koi , Golfish guppy ...etc ) in their enclosure for them to hunt and eat if they can catch them !!

Hi I am very sad to inform u all that I lost my male sting ray.It had some problems in taking food few months back then he was all right. But again two weeks back it stoped taking any food even his favourite prawns. Last month was very bad for me I lost one pair of breeding discus and one flower horn...Totally disappointed. Now I have only one Female sting ray.

ouch....dat was bad....sorry to hear that.....i think u should do a water parameter check for all your fishes.....mayb s due to water parameter problem....or else it wouldnt be so many fishes die in a short period....

Just read a book/Magazine - AquaPets no 50 Dec2007
Inside theres a section - Stingray Perfect Manual !!

I think I know why theres a sp they call "mini " Its actually Colombia ray , Potamotrygon reticulate and the chinese name " mi ni hong " thus direct translation Mini ray !!

Sorry for the confussion !! !

Does anyone know where can i get dwarf stingray species that would not surpass 25cm diameter around klang valley?
Want to search a smaller variant than motoro and more manageble.

Examples:
black tailed antenna ray

Hi guys.. I'm Bam.. I just newbie in keeping the stingray.. I prefer to keep all the monster fish.. previously I keep my Arapaima Gigas & redtail Catfish for more than 1 year. Just sold to Aquarium shop at Shah Alam last Sunday (11/1/2015). My Arapaima grows to 30inch & my Redtail Catfish 24inch.

So now, i like to moving forward for another creature with non-bony monster fish. For the beginning, I bought a pair of Motoro sp with 5-6inch diameter.

how to make sure the rays are feeding well? FYI my tank has a substrate & using Sump filtering. Just these few days, I gave them frozen worm but hard to see if there eat it or not. by the way, I have also other fishes in the tank like Kelah, Sebarau, Temoleh but still juvenile size.

Thanks
Bam

Other uses in science and technology
sp., an abbreviation for species used in place of a specific epithet in a species name
