htkaki,

I guess u r the projector guru here. Have u sold any pj to people in penang? I plan to get one installed at my father's home and the HD65 is very well priced. Is it possible for me to check out somewhere in penang?

Aint a guru. Still learning  blush.gif

Unfortunately, not yet. I am not sure which shop does have this. Maybe Watts at Perak Road or DSOP, which sell office stuff and they have a showroom near Penang Jetty and another showroom near Megamall Prai.
*
Ok, thanks. Maybe I can talk to you when I come down to KL for a viewing. I don't have good experiences with Watts. DSOP mostly sells multimedia pjs, I will check if they have pj for home theater. There are only a few AV stores in Penang and the ones that are around are not really customer oriented.

If anyone knows where in Penang I can view a pj well setup and not being sold at exorbitant prices, pls advise. Thanks in advance.

bro i can demo to u when i go pg.. but i cant promise u when... normally i go at least once a month.. Abt Watts i think u r quite right.. i had the worst experience there..
*
Cool bro. We can discuss in PM.

I am new to the pj scene. Been more in the plasma scene. I have seen some fantastic screen shots of the home theater pjs. My experiences with pj have only been multimedia pj so they are not good. Also the fact that the pjs in the "mamak" stalls are definately not doing justice to the true capability of the new home theater pj.

Anyone knows how to calibrate the picture?

I used my old AVIA dvd, but for the color calibration, it's not suitable. HD65 doesn't have 'COLOR' setting, it has 3 gains and 3 bias settings instead ?!  blink.gif  Tried moving them around, but doesn't affect the color patterns.

I calibrated the contrast and brightness but turned out too dark when watching movie.  blush.gif
*
The 3 gains/bias are to calibrate grayscale and to do that you need a colorimeter or a spectroradiometer. They will/should not affect the colours at all.

If no tools are used, the only the brightness and the contrast can be set. Colour can be set using colour filters but it would not be too accurate.

anyone here with PS3 for BD ..care to share the setting??
*
The problem is for projectors, the screen that u use makes sharing of settings different. Each screen has its own gain. Setting brightness and contrast correctly is key before adjusting grayscale. I shd get around to calibrating a projector soon. But I'm not sure if he is using a PS3 or a HTPC. Will update once I get they chance to calibrate a HD65.

So what are we using for calibration? AVIA + Spyder? Eyes?
*
Not sure it this was directed to me. I use the X-rite EyeOne Pro with Calman software. I also use HD and SD (NTSC) test discs as source over BD/DVD player. Eyes are very subjective. Eyes are typically used for very low APL test patterns when u question the results of a spectrophotometer.

RS10 only 13.5k! drool.gif

can ask Panny AE3000 go PYT!! tongue.gif
*
mpyw,

The Panny has its benefits as well. The auto zoom lens (for 2.35 to 16:9) is pre-programable. It also has a CMS. RS1 does not have these but has a better contrast ratio. So it depends on the user I suppose.

BTW what is PYT?

PYT is some rather unpleasant canto which better left unexplained to you.

RS1 is the older model, right? While RS10 is the new one. Correct me if I am wrong.
*
Got the meaning of PYT....

Yes , I meant RS10....

Edit: Actually RS10 I believe has a better scaler. HQV Reon, could be wrong. Also read somewhere that you can go into the service menu to automate the zoom to mimic AE3000 but not sure. Some of the screenshots of the RS10 on a large (>100in) screens look fabulous. Tempted. The problem with projector is it should be a bat cave to enjoy the fullest.

the 2nd spoiler is the indication of too much red in the skin tone.. that's what i hightlighted b4.. that part really need to tone down for correct skin tone. the face has that red magenta which i emphasize earlier.

magenta and red colour is a different hue.. so u want red colour to be red in colour and not magenta which have some purplish colour in the red.

Added on April 13, 2009, 9:24 pmOk i think my camera cannot take an accurate pic or i don't know the right method to do it. it look greenish in the photo.

Picture 1- The picture in 1080p , the picture is not processed like other film did so u physically connect with right skin tone. Picture 1 is a photography failure, it shouldn't look so green. anyway, i just show u guys this photo mistake.

Picture 4

All the soldiers should be noticeable.
Over Contrast will push their detail with shades and shadow. We want to add brightness to it .

This is just an amateur assumption but let's see after anfield makes my day soon with his calibration tool.

You are making a lot of progress towards getting the right picture and it helps when u care.

Next trip to KL bro, for sure. Will confirm and let u know.

As a guide for the setting is not a problem. Since most of us are not using the same screen and different environment, I guess a minor tweaking needs to be done too.

Btw, I don't mind chipping in too  smile.gif
*
The screens make it difficult to say if sharing setting will help. Also as htkaki says, it also depends on your environment. Eg, if there is absolutely no ambient light at all, then it would be better to target a gamma of say 2.3 to 2.35 compared to a room that has some ambient light, then targeting a gamma of 2.18-2.22 might give u better shadow details. Also the player that you use makes a difference. I guess most people use PS3 but I think this might be the year where more and more people start going to dedicated Blu Ray player for serious HT viewing. DVD players too many to make a generic settings. Each one I have seen sends the picture differently.

Boss, you can afford it. When your new huge pad is ready, you should consider this or JVC DLA-RS20.
*
Or maybe a JVC DLA-RS10 with a Lumagen Radiance XD/XE..... brows.gif

BTW, htaki , Lumagen has no rep in the far east...maybe u shd talk to them abt this..their products are 110-240V...

Finally got to calibrate the HD65. Impressive set. Managed to set gamma at 2.4 (only 90% stimulus had lower gamma)Delta E1976 Grayscale errors were less than 3 at all stimulus levels. Cinema mode had the best gamma. Colour errors were below DE 1994 of 5 except for green and cyan. They were quire high. There is no colour control so there is no way to improve it. Hackwire's room is light controlled and the walls are matte black. Cinema 100% white was 11ftL. Since his room is fully light controlled this was bright enough. No clipping of green, red and blue at high and low end of the white/black.

Also calibrated bright mode for the fun of it. DE1976 for grayscale was <3 for all stimulus except 80 -100%. Bright image 20ftL. Gamma was also very decent at 2.35.

Hackwire's room is super cool. Total black!

Overall, very good for a budget set.

For a budget set, it gives good results post calibration.
